Reflection on the Interview Process “To be human is to have a collection of memories that tells you who you are and how you got there.” These words of Rosecrans Baldwin, the American novelist and essayist, adequately sum up the entirety of our interview with Shie Re Htoo and Shi Re Wa. Through their traumatic experiences in the Thailand refugee camp, these individuals have struggled and lived on to become who they are today. As my group went about the interview process and then conducted the actual interview, we learned many things about the life and experience of the refugee. We were able to see contrasts between their experiences and those of characters we’ve studied in class. As we learned, “Many victims have regarded the telling of stories as essential, either in terms of their recovery and healing or in terms of bearing witness to atrocity so that future atrocities can be avoided” (Hackett and Rolston 355). As we conducted this interview we hoped to gain a deeper understanding on the process of healing as it is affected by trauma from the story of Shie Re Htoo and Shi Re Wa. Our methodology sought to emphasize this objective. As we went through the interview we were able to get some main points such as a contrast between life then and life now, a change of roles, and the results of expectations. As we prepared for our interview, our group met several times to make sure we were on the same page and to work together for a common goal. This group works very well together and we were always able to stay on track and get the work done. We were always very cautious not to offend anyone as we went about the process of preparing questions and thinking of topics. We were very clear multiple times in our communication with our interviewees before and during the meeting that we only wanted to hear their stories and that they shouldn’t hesitate to tell the truth of their experiences. I believe this helped our interviewees feel more comfortable during our meeting. We were surprised by some of the things that came up in the interview so the questions we asked had to be slightly amended as we went, however we were able to do this smoothly. So the interviewees would feel more comfortable, we had one person asking the
For the purpose of this interview, I interviewed Mrs. Ann Clare- School Psychologist and Mrs. Scott Nelson- School Principal.
‘The Happiest Refugee’ discusses various concepts including the effects of war, the trauma that refugees experience, their desire to contribute to society and our negative attitudes towards them. After the war, South Vietnamese soldiers and their families were captured by the North Vietnamese Communists and held in labour camps. Some of these prisoners were eventually released (after 1976), however, they had no right to education, employment or government supplied food rations. If Ahn had not left this oppressive environment, he would have grown up in extreme poverty and would be a very different person due to the trauma that
Do you think Serge’s skills were assessed adequately? Do you think he was correctly identified as learning disabled? Why or Why not?
Eric Tang’s Unsettled is an ethnographic account of Cambodian refugees in the Bronx, New York that evokes a nuanced understanding of the refugee experience. Unlike many other ethnographies, Tang’s work centers around one individual named Ra Pronh, a fifty year old woman who survived the Cambodian genocide and has lived as a refugee for most of her life. The bulk of his work draws upon two main sources: Tang’s notes that are gathered from his work as a community organizer in refugee neighborhoods and his interviews with Ra Pronh over a three year time period. Throughout his interviews with Ra, Tang often encountered a language barrier with her. There were times where Ra’s children would translate her words from Khmer to English for Tang to

Many young students want to pursue a career in accounting but are still wondering whether the possibility of matching this job or not. In general, the accounting industry is considered the industry that many students including myself choose and study. Graduate, students easily find a job and have a steady income. Not only easy to find a job and a stable income, I began to choose accounting because of the peculiarity quite "comfortable" of the industry: not too demanding, picky, I just have to like working with the numbers and skills required when working with numbers. Since accounting is an indispensable part of all companies and organizations, so this is one of the best craft unemployment negligent that I want to purse.
For my In-Depth Interview paper, I chose to Interview my co-worker Senada Cufurovic whom I work with at Bank of the West. Senada finds herself culturally diverse as being from another country and culture. As long as I have known Senada from working with her for the past two years, I have never been able to get to know her background from where she came from until this opportunity to interview her came up.
When we were given this assignment I was very uneasy about talking to another person about personal matters. Let alone someone who I had never had a conversation with and was of a different race and ethnicity. My interviewee's name is Micheal. He considers himself black of African American descent. He is a black 36 yr old black male. Michael was born in San Bernardino, CA. He’s an educated and a professional male who works in college. He is the father of 2 boys, happily married. His wife is considered a white woman. Michael is the second from the oldest of about 9 children. He was raised by his aunt and uncle who he very happily calls, mom and dad. They had 2 adopted children when he was taken in and then they adopted 2 more after him. He smiles
For my Success Interview, I questioned Nicole Pha. An escrow assistant at First American Title and a first-generation refugee who escaped from the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia to settle in America at the young age of 4 with her family. They had fled in the middle of the night with no belongs from their village for fear of death and slavery. Her family was originally given asylum in Baltimore and after getting settled, they moved to California to restart their lives. Mrs. Pha is now working as an escrow assistant for First American Title in Orange County making a six-figure salary while supporting her husband and two children. During my interview with Mrs. Pha, I examined the 4 core reoccurring themes of her success: Success isn’t success, sacrifice
I feel the the informational interview went fairly well. I actually had the opportunity to work for Mrs. Kaur last summer so I knew her a little bit and was comfortable asking her questions. Also, having some prior knowledge of her work and background allowed me to ask address concerns that I may have not been able to without that pre-exisitng connection. I was able to learn a great deal about what actually goes into running a business and also learned about the great range of skills required to create your own company/business. Even though I learned a lot about the actual pratice of having your business, I feel I missed out on the educational aspects. Because Mrs. Kaur had not pursued a education related to business, she was not really in
My first choice for an interviewee is my Mother. Her name is Karyn Claire Murray, and she is not a US citizen. She is a legal alien from England, but she has spent two large chunks of her life in the US. In her early twenties, she spent a year working at Disney World as a Cultural Representative in the EPCOT Center. She moved back to England after working in America, but at the age of twenty-six she married my father and moved to Northern California. She has now been in Northern California for thirty years now. Since moving to America she has experienced culture shocks, stereotypes, and segregation from her American family since she is not a citizen. She has gone through immigration, culture changes and self-questioning of what country she
The person whom I have interviewed has a very healthy lifestyle. This healthy life style shows through because of their excersize to calorie intake ratio. The respondent to the questionnaire is a fifteen year old female and when looking at the health.gov dietary guidelines a teenager should excersize at least an hour everyday and the respondent exceeds this recomendation. The website also states that a fifteen year old female that is active should have an estimated calorie intake of at least 2,400, and the respondent is close the this estimation.
Over the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to work for a marketing firm in southern California. I have been able to learn so much about this line of work and about how it will apply to me in the future. I started seeking out marketing internships in the beginning of February 2017. I came across this marketing firm and submitted my resume and cover letter, I was contacted in March to set up an interview. I was finishing the winter semester but decided to take a flight to California to complete the three-round interview process. During this time, I was able to learn about how the company had signed a contract with sprint to increase marketing sales. The first-round interview lasted about fifteen minutes and consisted of reviewing my resume and background in marketing. I was able to use past work experience that included customer service to show that I have a background in working with customers and helping provide a great connection with the company. That night I was called and invited to the second-round interview. This interview was conducted in a group setting and I had to review ways that I was a better asset than those interviewing with me. This included going over skills I had developed including excel, advanced writing, and other business skills I had obtained during classes at BYUI. I was then invited to go immediately into the third round of interviewing. Once again, my resume was reviewed and I was able to share why I was interested in marketing and
On August 14, 2017 and August 16, 2017, I shadowed the technology director to observe the effectiveness of her daily scheduling and procedures. Due to the task Ms. Caraway was working on, I was unable to observe her daily routine, but was able to assist with the task and had extensive conversations on her job and how she endeavors to accomplish the requirements of her position. I found Ms. Caraway to be knowledgeable in her field with a good understanding on the technology needs of a small school system. She had an understanding of the technical and administrative responsibilities of a lead technology personnel. While she is aware of these expectations, she lack the confidence and communication skills needed to establish good working
