The sound of heavy footsteps pounding on the field. The heavy breathing of players working hard. Players grunting as they get tackled. People cheering when someone cores a touchdown. You may think that I am describing American football, but I am actually describing rugby. I recently interviewed Sam Freeman about how he has mastered rugby. He explained to me most of the rules of the game as well as his history with the sport and why he has fallen in love with rugby enough to want to master it. Sam Freeman has mastered rugby through his hard work and his belief that if you work hard it will pay off. Rugby is a lot like American football with a few differences. Just like in football there is a ball, tackling, touchdowns, field goals, and …show more content…
When he first started rugby he came in knowing nothing. He saw a poster at a high school football game and wanted to try it out. He said “Track was just too boring.” He needed something with more competition. Something that would challenge him. When it came to his first day of practice he knew it was going to be full of new things. He knew in order to succeed he had to work hard. He told me he got put into a scrimmage as what is known as as the prop, which are the biggest and strongest players. He laughed as he said “I got destroyed.” He had to work hard, so he wouldn’t have to get destroyed in another practice again. With mastering something you have to practice it a lot. Sam has to practice rugby year round. That itself is a lot of hard work. Sam plays the position of what is known as the hooker. The hooker’s job is to fight for the ball and try to throw the ball back to his own players. Sam shows his handwork and determination just by playing as the hooker. He has to fight though a mad mass of people thought the whole game only to try to keep a good enough hold of the ball to be able to accurately throw the ball backwards to his one of his own teammates. This must be just hard in itself because it’s hard to throw a ball accurately forwards without a ton of people around you, let alone on the ground in a mob of people trying to throw it backwards. In order for Sam to have mastered rugby he has gone through a load of
Rugby is a less commonly known and played sport that helped originate football. William Webb Ellis originated the sport of rugby in the early 1900’s. Ellis was a student at Rugby School in England when he created the game, which is how its name originated. The way Ellis invented this game was when he broke soccer rules and made his own new game (The origin of rugby). The sport of rugby is similar to football because of the rules that are implemented and the way special teams are used on the field. One major difference between the two sports is that football is continuously throwing forward; in contrast, rugby requires that the ball must be thrown backward or laterally. Moreover, positions in this sport are very different than football. These positions consist of forwards and backers in the offensive scheme. The forwards are the bigger and stronger styled players that block for the backers, similar to the offensive line in football. Backers are the fast, small players that usually handle the ball the most and run with it. In rugby, they fall in the same lines of the running back or quarterback in the sport of football. Although rugby has many similarities to
This case study will to examine wheelchair rugby, and how Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Limited organises play, qualifications, the specialist equipment used in the sport, as well as the development of the sport with in the UK. This is due to the author’s ability to rugby and interest in how rugby has been developed into a disability sport.
The game starts with a scrum, which is the forwards or scrumies. They push each other until the ball is kicked back enough to be placed out of the scrum. From there, a player can only advance by passing back or going in for a ruck. A ruck is when the player with the ball is tackled, a player from the same team puts their legs over them so the other team cannot grab the ball. If the ball goes out of bounds a hooker and the teams line out team goes and competes for the ball. (Rugby History,
But the learning of these skills takes commitment. The commitment of your time and your willingness to do your best. “Another disadvantage to playing football is that the sport requires a significant commitment of time. Often, during the season a player's schedule revolves entirely around the team -- practices, gym workouts, games, film breakdown -- and it makes life considerably more hectic”(Goldsmith). The hectic schedule can cause the players to lack behind in their classes and can also stress the student out because they have to be able to perform their best both in the sport and their
Within this assignment I will be exploring the influence of concussion within KS3 rugby and discuss the signs and symptoms it has on young athletes and the impact it has on their return to physical activity.
Seattle's pass defense has collapsed without Earl Thomas, ranking fifth in Football Outsiders DVOA through Week 11 but 30th out of 32 teams since Thomas missed his first game in Week 12. However, Detroit's passing game has similarly collapsed since Matthew Stafford hurt his finger early in Week 14, ranking 10th through Week 13 but 27th over the past four weeks. It would seem those matching declines would cancel each other out, but the problem for Detroit is that Seattle is better at everything else except special teams. Detroit has little ground attack, while Seattle has one of the 12 best run defenses since FO advanced stats began in 1989. Seattle's offense has been only average this season, but the Detroit defense is much worse than it looks.
went on to play for the Warringah Rugby Club and represented Australia in the national under-19s side in both 2000 and 2001; also in 2001 he represented Australia in the under-21s side. After the successful appearances for junior representative sides, he made his Super 12 debut for the New South Wales Waratahs. He continued to make the under-21 Australian side up for the next two years, before touring Japan with Australia A in 2003. He signed for the ACT Brumbies for the 2003 season.[6] He made his debut for the Brumbies against the Sharks at Durban, scoring a try. He played for the Brumbies in 2004, with the team winning the championship. He missed out on a mid-year test match against England in Brisbane due to injury. He was a member of the
Football season is winding down. As you know, the end of football season means everyone is gearing up for big showdowns between their favorite matchups. If you are a football fan, then it’s possible that you are planning to tailgate this year. Although tailgating is a great way to show you team spirit, safe tailgating is critical to having a good time and prevent claims against your auto insurance.
American Football is better than Rugby because in Football there are four chances to get a first down and run down the field to get a touchdown and makes the game more exciting when the teams try to get a first down and it makes players able to make amazing plays. American Football is a game where there are two teams with an offense, who are trying to score a touchdown by either running the ball, or throwing the ball into the endzone to get a touchdown while the defense are trying to stop them. The objective of the game is to be the team with the most points. The Offense has a quarterback who is trying to either throw the ball to the Wide Receiver or anyone else that is open. There is another option to get yards, which is using a Running
Working part-time as a Grizzfit coach, it's imperative to teach the scholars how to set realistic life goals. However, guiding them through the necessary steps to successfully achieving their goals plays a significant role. With this in mind, I'd like to share with you a few of my own life goals and aspirations.
After being established in the 70’s, Touch Football is now played in every state of Australia and is ever increasing in popularity. Touch is a fast paced, thrilling sport that allows people of all ages to get involved with a rugby league style game without the major contact required in normal Rugby. Coaches for both league and union utilize many variations of touch at training as it can be used to improve skills while also having contact removed to avoid the possibility of injury. The overall aim in a game of Touch Football is for your team to score more touchdowns than your opponents. This is achieved by placing the ball in your opponents `Touchdown Zone. Touchdowns can be scored in a multiple amount of ways like rucking, wrapping and switching the ball to create space to score.
While playing football, or really any sport, you must have mental agility and be able to think quickly to play the game well. Throughout many events in the article “What Could Be Better Than a Touchdown”, the football player had to be a fast thinker and be fast on his feet. Sanneh, the author of this article wrote “Touchdown! And also perhaps a mistake? There are few situations in football where scoring an easy touchdown is the wrong thing to do.”
American football evolved from Rugby, it was the result of several changes to Rugby. College football is a team of students from the same university playing against other university teams. It was through college football that American football became so popular. On November 6, 1869 was the first intercollegiate football game between Rutgers and Princeton. They both played with teams of twenty-five, you were not able to carry or throw the ball. To score you had to kick the ball throw the goal post first to reach six goals wins. Rutgers won six to four, Princeton wanted a rematch so they played at Princeton this time, under Princeton’s rules. The only differences were that you were rewarded a free kick if a player caught the ball on the fly.
Australians are renowned for their passion for sport, in particular, the four main football codes (Australian Rules football, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer). In terms of the participation rate among these four codes, Australian Rules Football ranks second behind outdoor soccer, with 419 000 individuals or 2.6 % of the population participating in the sport. (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2009)
The Survey The survey conducted in my research stages indicated that many of my peers were aware of Rugby as a sport but their interest did not ascend beyond that. This information was reassuring as it demonstrated that people were aware of Rugby but they didn't have a deep understanding and would have to make assumption for example, “Rugby is too dangerous” and “Rugby is a game for hooligans”. These assumptions and generalizations are bad for any sport but its impact on Rugby is very severe in the western hemisphere due to the fact that contact sports here are dominated by American Football and Ice Hockey. The only aspect I would change about the interview is the examiner pool.
