Community is a very important part of life. The community that a person grows up with influences a person for their entire life. After reading the excerpt from The Glass Castle, I started to reflect on my own upbringing. I was very lucky to have a healthy life and a very supportive family. We had a nice home and I did not ever have to question where my next meal would come from. I was constantly surrounded by love. My community was great, but I am very aware that this is not the case for everyone. Jeanette Walls described her upbringing in her book and it brings to light the communities that are not so lucky. There are many people who need assistance and support. Throughout my life I have enjoyed many different volunteer opportunities. From a young age I volunteered at a local nursing home. I enjoyed it and I did feel like I made a difference but it was not my calling. I have volunteered with the homeless community, which is an extremely important community to assist. There is no shame in being homeless and I truly believe that a helping hand and a kind smile can improve a day and hopefully a life. There are two communities that I have absolutely loved serving and try to never turn down an opportunity to help; children and animals. The fact that I love working with children is not a surprise seeing it is the field I have chosen for a career. But I also love working with animals. For a short moment in my life I considered becoming a veterinarian. Instead, I love volunteering at the animal shelter. I love to go and help walk the dogs. For my community service opportunity, I knew I wanted to go to the animal shelter. I have not been in a while and I saw this as a good reminder to go back. The puppies are always very cute, but there are many older dogs that don’t get the attention they deserve. Being summer and very hot, the dogs can’t stay out for long. A friend came with me and together we walked a few dogs. It is always sad to see the dogs who have been at the shelter for months. I have never encountered an unfriendly dog at the Humane Society. I truly believe I can make a slight difference in a dog’s day when I can walk them and give them some love and affection and remind them that they are important.
About seventy nine percent of families around the world have an animal that they love and share their life with. Most families have either a dog or a cat. These pets are loyal, kind, and loving. We bring them into our homes and take care of them. There are some animals who aren’t fortunate enough to have a family to love and take care of them. These animals are abused and mistreated every day. The Humane Society Of The United States has made it their job to protect these animals and prevent this cruelty before it happens. They spend eighty percent of all of their donations on protecting these poor animals. I believe that these animals deserve a chance to escape these horrible circumstances and find a family who will love and care for them. If you donate you will be a part of these animals lives. You will be giving them a chance to be happy in life. You will be part of helping them find a loving
Engaging with my community is important because I been helping people volunteer around me since middle school and continuing in high school because of the help I received in elementary. I wanted to help the elementary children because of all the support and help that I received. Helping them makes me think of when I needed help and received through people. I mostly helps with volunteering around with little kids in different elementary schools at my school district. I want them to be safe and help them during their hard times. I wanted to help people because I wanted people to understand what they are learning and have a good education. When I’m volunteering I help keep the children safe and cheer them on when they are competing.
He came to the shelter seeking to find his cat. He told me how he had decided to end things with his girlfriend and that the day after his cat was missing. Turns out his girlfriend proceeded to break into his house and steal his cat along with all the cats’ things. I had to break the news that she had brought the cat here to be euthanized. I then helped him gather his Louie Viton cat carrier (Goes to show how much he truly loved his cat), his beloved cat’s toys, blanket, and bed. This guy was a mess and it was very hard to experience. This concludes that along with all of the many good memories that came out of the volunteering experience at the shelter it isn’t all rainbows and smiles.
Since being involved in a dog rescue organization, I’ve learned a lot about how an animal control shelter works. They are not just people who will take your dog if they get out of the yard. They are animal lovers who try their best to educate the community pet population control and help homeless pets find a new home. I sat down with a friend of mine who I met through the animal rescue group with both volunteer with to find out more about a day in the life of a shelter worker.
I use to volunteer at the Humane Society, but since my schedule got busy I don’t have the time like I use to before to go and help. I loved working with the animals, but it broke my heart to see them in a shelter because, I personally feel that every animal deserves to be in a loving home. It also made me really upset
At a young age I discovered a passion for helping others and I have continued to be passionate about serving my community since then. At the age of eight years old I began the first year of what would soon be my ten year membership of 4-H. Through that program and my church’s youth group I truly began to understand what selfless service was all about. I first began helping others by walking dogs at the local shelter and helping my 4-H club clean the sides of the highways. I later was able to experience several mission trips that opened my eyes to the larger aspect of service. My love for helping people continued to grow as I got older and I continued to find ways to make a difference. One of my favorite experiences was getting to help cook and serve a meal at a homeless
For my community engagement I choose to volunteer at the SPCA here is Salmon Arm. I am still continuing to volunteer and hope to for the rest of the two years I am in Salmon Arm. It has been a really awesome experience, and I have learnt a lot from spending time there. So many animals are mistreat, seen as disposable, and forgotten which lands them in the shelter. Most of these animals are so sweet and just want some love but their families no longer want them. There are so many sick people in this world that treat innocent animals with such cruelty; it is honestly one of the most heart breaking things I have seen. It makes me think about all the horrible things that happen daily in this world, either to animals or people. That has pushed me
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is an autobiography about a young woman’s journey in life. It delves into her childhood, which was as dire as it could become, and how she was able to break her family’s habits and achieve her dreams of becoming a reporter/journalist. There were several significant lessons throughout the story, but what I deemed to be the most valuable lesson was that struggle is important. In the book, struggle is what built Jeannette into who she is today. It drove her to be successful in life, taught her that hope is always out there, and formed her character.
The parents did not provide the basic needs for their children. Finally, they had settled in a small town named Welch in West Virginia .There they bought the oldest rustiest unpainted house they could afford and every now and then they had electricity .The dad explained he had bought that house because it came with extra land .The perfect amount to build the glass castle . The glass castle was supposed to be this huge mansion made up of glass walls and glass ceilings .In addition it was controlled by solar panels .The glass castle was never built, but young Jeannette Walls saw those words as hope .Thus Lori and Brian saw those words as excuse .For instance whenever dad was asked , why didn't he have a job he would reply it was because he was
In Jeannette Walls’s memoir The Glass Castle she recounts her dream of build a glass castle for himself and his family to live in. Throughout the story her father goes as far as making blue prints and marking where it will the castle will be built, but he never actually gets around to doing it. The father is easily distracted by other things and never admits to it, he always has an excuse. This is exactly why the glass castle never came to be. Jeannette as a naive and hopeful child describes her father’s plan like this, “Dad... was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle. All of Dad’s engineering and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert.” (Walls 25). If I could build my own version of the glass castle I would have a house with three bedrooms and at least two and half bathrooms. There would be a study/library, a music room, an art studio, a home theater, kitchen and living, and a hot tub in the back accompanied with a beautiful garden that would have a small fountain.
Others give so much to us through volunteer community programs. In fact, a neighborhood could not live as successfully and joyfully without having a community organizations to thank veterans, support children, and care for the elderly. By volunteering at a young age, youth learn the joy
Many families come to the shelter on Tuesday nights looking for their forever friend. It is my pleasure to show them the animals that we have. I walk them through the cat and dog rooms until one gains their attention. I get
Cats and dogs, they’re adorable alright! Last summer I started volunteering at the SPCA adoption center in Tyler, Tx. I wanted to be a veterinarian, so I thought I’ll try by exposing myself to animals more than just the five cats and two dogs that I have at home. Becoming a veterinarian is a very challenging career and also a very expensive one, so I wanted to be positive in what I was getting into. Therefore, I choose to apply to volunteer at an animal adoption center. Volunteering at this animal adoption center would allow me to get experience handling animals and know if this career was right for me. So it began. I tried to go volunteer every Saturday that I could. At first I only volunteer taking care of the cats because that's what
Since my mother saw the passion I had for caring for animals, she thought it’d be a good idea to take me to volunteer at the Palm Valley Animal shelter, I was supper excited, I couldn’t wait to help all the beautiful innocent animals. I walked in and the nice lady at the front desk told my mother and I, to sign in, so we did. Soon after they led us to a door where they had
I have been volunteering before I was old enough to know I was volunteering. As the youngest of four, I happily came along whenever my parents and siblings volunteered. But, community service is not just something I was taught to do; it is something I love to do. Today, I serve others in ways that are closer to my own heart. Serving people and animals “who don’t have a voice” has been and always will be central to who I am. I spent this summer raising awareness and funds for foster children, and I am excited to use those funds this November to personally decorate and deliver new duffel bags with supplies to foster children in my area. Additionally, I have loved dedicating my time to a local animal rescue where I have participated in animal
