1. What is the Program Focus of this Integrated Learning Subject?
What have you learnt so far?
In marine biology this year we have covered many topics. We began the by learning to snorkel safely, in this topic we spent a couple of weeks learning the correct techniques and safety measures to snorkel safely. During this time, we went on many trips out of school to go on dives as a group to practice our skills for the final practical examination. After completing the snorkelling component of the marine biology course we went on to learn about how to maintain a temperate marine aquarium. In this topic we firstly learnt how to set up a temperate marine aquarium, then went fishing to fil our tanks. Once these tasks where completed we learnt about all of the step needed to ensure that the aquarium was successful in keeping the marine animals alive, this included learning about the pump system, how to clean the tank and how to do the various chemical tests to see if the water was in a suitable condition for the animals to live in. after learning about how to maintain a temperate aquarium we looked into local marine issues such as seals in the Coorong and local sharks.

I chose the Australian fur seal as is being one of the suggested animals for the project and they are one of my favourite animals

When ever you go to the beach, do you ever think about what can happen to an animal and the water when you leave a wrapper in the sand or a plastic bottle in the water? If you think about it, even a small piece of plastic can harm a fish. The fish could mistake it for food. This could potentially kill the fish. There are other things that people d that pollutes the ocean. An oil spill from a boat can get fish sick (Doc.2). Also, solid waste, plastics, glass, and foam (OI). Marine life can get trapped in any of these items (OI). There are many things we can do to prevent this, like, reducing plastic waste in stream, improve solid waste management, and increase, capture, and reuse (Doc.1). When thinking about getting away to some serene paradise to help forget about work or school obligations most people instantly think of the beach. Whether it be the west or east coast the beach is a universal symbol of peace and serenity, plus a little bit of fun. But this bliss has a whole different meaning to me. This is where I grew up and how I found myself. The west coast of Florida is the first time I felt the sand in my toes and the salt water on my face. These memories inspired me to give back to the ocean and its inhabitants and follow my dreams of becoming a marine biologist.
Background knowledge demands: For this book, students must know what fish and scales are. They will also need to know that fish live under the sea.
I’ve always had a keen interest in science. When I was younger, I viewed a dolphin show online. I was instantly fanisnated and later I was informed that the trainers were special marine biologists. The idea of becoming a marine biologist is still a dominate career choice for me. Last year, I was incredibly curious with the aspects that a marine biologist has to undertake that I researched the career path as part of my PLP. This only ignited my interest even further and when I was invited to attend the Flinders University I particularly focused on the marine biology and biology lectures.
The dream of having majored in marine biology is one thing, but to get to have a marine biology degree is a fifth grader’s dream come true. The environment is heading in a rough direction. For example, ocean acidification is already a problem. The decrease in pH of our ocean acidity is causing coral reefs to die out—which houses thousands of organisms’ homes and food sources. Due to the contaminants, we release into the natural environment, we are slowly losing ecosystems every day. Therefore, I want to be the researcher to help save the oceanic life from these horrible conditions. Also, the career of marine biology can take a person anywhere, from the coasts of the Bahamas all the way to the depths of the Arctic Ocean. This provides the advantage
Since its establishment in 1964 the world famous franchise SeaWorld has been subjected to various tabloid headlines and legal investigations following the horrendous attacks by orcas, also known by their more apt name ‘Killer Whales’. These incident range from minor to major, but, there has been rare cases of fatalities from the family orientated marine parks based in America.
I examine how rising or falling tide can affect the water level of Corte Madera Salt Marsh in this report. The data is from Wednesday (June 19th) and Thursday (June 20th). My hypothesis is that tide and water level have positive relationship. From the result, I learn that the water level and tide have positive relationship. However, when tide changes its direction, the water level is likely to stay or little change.
Humans are just like sharks. Humans eat meat they have live babies and sharks make mistakes just like humans. Sharks are very interesting creatures but people don’t give them a chance because people make them sound like they are terrible beasts. Many people are more likely to get killed by a car crash then by a shark. If people keep killing sharks for fins there will be no more sharks.
Although there can be certain cons to pursuing marine biology as a profession, there are an abundant amount of pros to living this life. In addition to learning about marine creatures, marine biologists also help develop medicines and find different cures for sicknesses ("What is Marine Biology?”). Marine biologists get to see amazing aquatic places and animals that are very astounding and beautiful. I have wanted to be a marine biologist since I was five years old I never saw myself being anything other then that. After reading five articles and writing this essay, I cannot wait to go to college and become a marine biologist. The ocean takes up 96.5% of the surface of the earth. Ever since I was an infant, I have spent almost every summer on my father's boat in Ocean City, New Jersey. Whether it be fishing or jumping off the boat to go swimming, I have always been familiar and had an immense love for both the boat and the ocean. Up until this year, I had never known that there was an option for me to be able to take online classes at my high school. Since I have already taken all of the science classes that are honors that were available, I needed to find another science class. I had found the honors oceanography class in the catalog online, and I instantly signed up for the course. I enrolled because of my interest for the ocean and it's inhabitants. If Marine Science was not fascinating enough, think about how interesting it is that high school students are being introduced to it at such an early age, and how this introductory science can have a measurable impact on our environment. Today’s young adults do not cease to amaze and have become the future representatives of eco-friendly living. STPS’s very own Michael Conner had the honor of lecturing these eco-beacons and green go getters about sea turtles in Ryan Cilsick’s gifted 12th grade class. Ryan says that, “four science classes are requisite to graduate high school”. Ryan alone teaches six Science based classes at Edgewood High School in Merritt Island. The little shark wouldn’t leave my side until I was forced to return to the surface due to my air tank running low. It was then, that I realized the beauty and serenity of sharks and similar species. When I’m older, I want to help injured sharks regain their health and hopefully return them to their natural habitat. Also, I hope to end shark finning around the world and help increase populations. Shark populations have reached a low in the past few decades due to overfishing and shark finning, which is when their fins are cut off and the shark dies to loss of blood and asphyxiation from drowning. Last summer, I participated in a program at the University of Miami and I took two undergraduate marine science classes. This expanded my knowledge, but i still crave to learn more and gain hands-on experience. I use every opportunity to learn more about sharks, like research papers and my free time. I love teaching children about marine conservation and when I tutor kindergarteners through big to little, I always read them the fish book to help me explain that fish are friends and need protection. My family background is Latino and I come from a family that struggles at times, but is always willing to work their butts off just to provide things for myself and also for my siblings . My uncles who I consider my parents have always been there for me and my two older sisters, he took us in when my mother passed away giving birth to my little sister, after she gave birth to my little sister, she disappeared from our lives since her dad took her, but that’s life and i’m sure one day we will meet. Marine biologist play a key role in understanding climate change and identifying sustainable and profitable ways humans can use the sea and its resources. Marine biologist understand marine organisms needs in their habitats, ultimately helping protect species and reduce human threats. As experts in understanding marine habitats, marine biologist often form essential parts of relief teams. They respond to oil spills and chemical leaks, helping other scientist restore normalcy to local habitats. Sometimes, marine biologists influence other spheres, such as economics and law. They might analyze the effect of sonar on whales and seals, for instance, recommending best practices for reducing harm on those sensitive populations. Marine biologists understand how the ocean supports basic needs, and in turn relay that information to lawmakers, who establish protocols regarding human use of ocean waters and marine organisms. Marine biologist help develop ocean technology too, improving waste elimination, energy sourcing and extraction of key sources. A brief review of components of the marine environment, world food resources, climate control, air and water quality, transportation, and the ecosystem balance are important features that are studied by marine biology. However, many fisherman are unable to catch as many fish as they used to, so they are increasingly using cyanide and dynamite in fishing, which further degrades the coral reef ecosystem.[6] This perpetuation of bad habits simply leads to the further decline of coral reefs and therefore perpetuating the problem. One solution to stopping this cycle is to educate the local community about why conservation of marine spaces that include coral reefs is important.[7] Once the local communities understand the personal stakes at risk then they will actually fight to preserve the reefs. Conserving coral reefs has many economic, social, and ecological benefits, not only for the people who live on these islands, but for people throughout the world as well.
