If we understand library users as “readers who write,” we should reflect on when and why they write. Generally, most users in academic libraries engage in writing based on research or “research based writing.” How are we to understand this particular genre that consumes so many users’ time and instructors’ assessment.
Consider first what research based writing is not. It is not creative writing, although creative writers will often research some aspect of their subject. It is not journalistic writing, although the journalist makes steady use of sources. It is not writing for publication, since it seldom finds an audience of more than five. The author’s opinions will be based on reasons and evidence, not emotions or hearsay. The author’s reasoning will follow the principles of Western reasoning, if only informally. The evidence used will have a logical link to the reasons they support. Evidence itself will be a verifiable “fact.”
Furthermore, research based writing seeks a plausible (not conclusive) answer to a question of interest to the readers. The overarching purpose for writing is to show why the reader should accept that answer. This includes acknowledging and responding to possible alternative answers to the question. Others’ ideas are used to find or support claims, reasons, or evidence—but cannot to be presented as the writer’s own. Even though the writer may come to the same conclusion as others who have addressed the issue before, he or she must present the answer and its supporting reasons as the product of an one’s own investigation, being careful to acknowledge when and how others’ contributions have been utilized. The reader expects to see all this written in standard edited English with few (or no) errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation.
Often research based writing is a solitary exercise. For non-academics and many librarians, research based writing has been rarely practiced outside the classroom, and many of the processes may not be familiar or practiced only informally. Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.
For example, an instructional manual on how to repair car, or fix an appliance is considered a research paper, since someone had to investigate how to do it. Moreover, I was specially interested in the learning about how my writing and thinking could improve by foreseeing my reader’s critical questions (p.13).
In Honors English III, Mrs. Bryce assigned the class a research project. Although we were allowed to work in groups, all of the writing portions were expected to be done individually. We were allowed do to research on any topic that we wanted. Unlike most papers we had written, this paper would be written in APA format. Some of the work would be done in class, such as the Introduction and Literature Review. However, most of it was expected to be done outside of school. Some additional requirements was that we had a minimum of three data collection sources and three findings from them.
"Constructing a Research Paper" is a unit from "Academic Writing for Graduate Students" was a third edition written by John M. Swales and Christine B. Feak, and published by the University of Michigan in 2012. This book mainly focuses on how to prepare international graduate students to write academic papers. This book consists of a total of 8 units, of which unit 8 explains how to construct a research paper (Swales & Feak, 2012).
For the first major writing assignment I chose to write about how washing hands affects moral judgment. The main claim the popular press article was presenting was washing hands affects moral judgment. I said it was not valid because it did not provide enough information to prove it. After reading the research article I can now say that it is reliable and valid. The research article had more information and background to back up the theory. It goes more in depth on the experiments and the data collected.
The reflection this week asks us how we would differentiate instruction for writing a research paper in our relative area of interest. Specifically speaking, the reflection asks for two specific differentiated learning tasks. One of the activities must involve a tired activity, while the other can utilize any of the strategies suggested in the lesson. For this particular reflection, I will focus my attention on an early middle school level activity to differentiate on writing a research paper.
Until I started graduate school, I did not write scholarly unless it was mandated. There were times I would write for administration but not often. In addition, I do not have a strong writing background which is one of the reason it took me so long to go back for my masters. Looking back on my education I do not feel that I had strong English teachers who taught me how to write, it was just an expectation. As I returned to school last year, I was afraid I would fail in the area of writing. I am a people person and prefer to make presentations over writing. However, I have found this educational journey a wonderful learning experience.
The last time I wrote an academic paper was in the fall of 2010. The topic was The “Pipe-Line” & At-Risk Youth. Upon reading all the data and research it was clear that the research topic I selected was too broad. My professor suggested that I narrow my research in order to pinpoint my thesis and purpose. The suggestion assisted me in developing a specific topic, which ensured that my research met the qualitative and quantitative properties. Eventually I passed the course with an A-. I believe the Webinar Crash Course in Scholarly Writing is helpful and insightful. It will allow me to produce the same results similarly to my experience in 2010. The video suggests that “voice, evidence, paragraphs and argument” is the writing tools for success in scholarly writing. Writing the research draft was extremely difficult and complicated. Attempting to complete the assignment felt like I was trying to crack the Enigma codes. The process of writing requires perfect precision and patience in maneuvering sentences and transitioning everything in a proper manner, which I could not religiously follow. The assignment only required three to four pages of the research draft, which was not too strenuous but still I could not write anything. Everytime I tried to write something, it did not feel right. It felt as if I was lacking something crucial, so I would feel compelled to click the backspace key and delete my poor attempts to write something essential to my research paper. So, writing the research draft was no easy task for me. In fact, the entire assignment was so difficult that it left me in a deep quandary and from there, I was sucked into an abyss of confusion and frustration.
A research paper is a writer’s point of view presenting a perspective by seeking to analyze, evaluate, or argue a position. Therefore, writing a research paper is more than just a collection or a sum of a writer’s sources. Writing Mode: A research paper is a form of EXPOSITORY writing (informs, explains, clarifies, or defines), anchored to researched, cited information.
With the purposes of this study being to discern whether teachers in rural areas are trained in and using research-based strategies to teach writing, an established survey entitled “Writing Test Practices” was located. Previously used in a research study conducted by Gilbert and Graham, this survey appraises how teachers teach writing. It focuses specifically on how teachers use eleven research-based strategies and how much time they spend teaching writing.
The study for this thesis will be exploratory research using secondary data collected by the communication agency, MESH Planning. The agency developed an innovative approach called ‘real-time experience tracking’, which involves three stages of data collection. And both qualitative and quantitative data will be collected and used in this context in order to get an insight of critical incidents.
