One of the most engaging things I have ever done as a student was science fair my junior year. It incorporated two of my greatest interests -- band and social justice -- and allowed me to mix them together into a glorious soup of interdisciplinary learning. It focused on the utilization of environmentally detrimental construction waste to create orchestral quality instruments in order to make music programs (and their benefits) accessible for urban impoverished areas. I spent a lot of time sorting through source after source because I was actually enjoying my research. It related directly to the world I lived in -- both band and the locus of urban poverty within a few miles of me. As I moved to the planning stage of the project, I, of course,
Music is a way for people to express themselves without having to make a drastic change. The reason I started to play music was because I love music in general to start off with and wanted the challenge of learning how to play an instrument. In sixth grade year there were probably 120 kids in band. Slowly through my band years many kids have dropped out. By the time I made it to the high school there were maybe 30 band students in, my grade and Mr. Rice the band director said, “They weren't able to handle it because band isn't easy.” One you have been in band you don't realize if you struggle or if you can't handle band and it's not a bad thing that students drop out of band. It just shows that they have decision making skills and don't want to hinder the other students acceleration in the class.
“Roll those feet! Keep those toes high! Square your shoulders! Keep the tempo moving!” This can be heard by directors, in most marching band rehearsals, as the band is racing around the field while playing mentally demanding music. Competitive marching band, the highlight of some high schoolers’ fall season, is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a group of musicians who play instruments while marching together at a parade or sports event” (“Marching Band”). In comparison a sport is defined as “a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other” (“Sports”). High school competition band is where a band practices from July to November to prepare one show to be
Throughout the late 19th century, African Americans did not have the same rights as white people, which led towards the establishment of Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws segregated blacks from whites in a political, educational, and social setting, which created unfair treatment towards people of color. In Devil in the Grove, four African American boys, known as the Groveland Boys, were falsely accused of raping a white woman in Florida, which was known as the Groveland case. Thurgood Marshall, who was a part of The National Association of Advancement for Colored People (NAACP), helped to solve the Groveland case, as he was an advocate in fighting against Jim Crow segregation. The labor force, vigilante groups, and legal precedents led towards the establishment of Jim Crow policies by segregating black people from white people in public areas. African Americans contested these policies by creating legal organizations that overturned cases supporting segregation laws and using music as a way to protest against the Jim Crow policies.
Every day millions of Americans turn on their radios, IPods, or some other device which allows them to listen to their favorite musicians and have no idea that there is a union standing guard to ensure the rights of those very musicians. The average American may think their favorite musicians are rolling “dough” and not realize that for the past hundred and fourteen years the American Federation of Musicians, aka AFM, has worked to improve the professional lives of musicians across North America. (American Federation of Musicians, 2010) AFM attracts its members with a mission to unite professional musicians which states, “We can live and work in dignity; Our work will be fulfilling and compensated fairly; We will have a meaningful voice
Freshman Band- Freshman is included in my curriculum because this allows the directors focus on the development of 9th grade students understanding of music and fundamentals. Skill ranges will vary but those that are “rising stars” will be placed in musical leadership positions that they may not obtain if they were in the upper level ensembles.
I have been asked many times by my friends that aren’t in band “why are you in band?” “Get out of band so we can be in the stands together during the game.” “band is lame,” They do not understand what band is really about. Band is not just about playing an instrument and marching.
There is no disputing that society is influenced by its choices of entertainment. Some ways in which people are influenced are positive, but others are harmful. In the society we live in, the harmful ways always outnumber the positive. If we gravitated toward the positive forms of entertainment a little more often than the negative, then our society would have fewer problems. Popular music has a negative effect on society and endorses a lack of creativity.
The most meaningful and intriguing activity that I have participated in is when I was responsible for children with disabilities at Camp Soar. Every day, for two weeks, I was feeding, bathing, making crafts, and swimming with my campers, which guided me to learn that I wanted to help children. I cherish this camp since it taught me to be reliable--making sure my camper gets the correct Gluten-Free meal--to be tentative--making sure my camper is not drowning in the lake--and it sparked my curiosity--questioning why do these children have Autism and Down Syndrome? This camp is the most influential, being it ignited my desire to study biology due to my devotion to aiding others. Even though this experience was stressful at times, without it, I
There have been many great leaders throughout the years I’ve been in the band, but I think Martha is the one leader that really stood out to me. Throughout my years in band Martha has made an impression on me, She was always outgoing in ways I will be as a leader and she was always there to help our section. As a leader I will have the same attitude as her when it comes to band camp and marching band in general. I love band camp but like every other person there can be tedious times and our immediate reaction is to complain about how hot it is or that Mr. Selaiden is making us do another rep, those were the times when I remember Martha really being positive and making us sing crazy songs, which I thought were stupid at the time but I really
For example to start the year off we worked on a project called makeshift poetry, which was a combination of humanities and physics. The project was to create a poem and find a way to
When one hears the word “feminist”, many different things may come to mind. One may think of the “bra burning” feminists of the 1960s or the “riot grrrl” feminists of the 1990s. It can bring to mind issues such as abortion, birth control, and unfair wages. There are many different aspects of feminism, some of which are understood only by those involved in the movement. But like most things people are passionate about, feminism has held a strong place in music since its very beginning, and can be seen in its festivals, its politics, and in the average American’s everyday life.
Over the years in our country’s history it has been apparent that the idea of same sex marriages is becoming much more popular, however in most states there is still one thing stopping them. That one thing stopping two people from the pursuit of happiness which they desire is a social injustice. Social injustices are situations where a person or group of people is treated unfairly due to certain factors for example discrimination, prejudice, racism, heterosexism, sexism, and so forth. In the case of same sex marriages, the factor playing a major role in this social injustice is where most people believe that opposite sexes attract, but in the case of a same sex couple wanting to be married, this brings about many topics to be discussed by
I’ve learned so much from working and competing in Science Olympiad. There were four competitions that were scheduled for me to compete in: Forensics, Chemistry Lab, Game On and Electric Vehicle. There was a lot of preparation and commitment that had to be put in. A slight mishap happened in Forensics we found out that only two teams could compete, so my team had to drop out , Chemistry Lab was mainly basic kinetics and gas laws during Game On we had to learn Scratch and then use that knowledge to create a game, The last event was Keltic Vehicle, in this event we had to pre-design a vehicle. It would be scored by how accurate it was. I am glad I was able to pick the events to see if would really enjoy that class or occupation.
So, the Element of culture that I find myself the most passionate about is Music. I say music because music I found in every culture. Music is what I believe in being part of human. There are literally hundreds different types of genres of music people listen to and millions of songs to listen to. A little about me, I personally find myself listen to rap music and old Rhythm and Blues. I come for a strong African American background family, where we have family get together, cookouts and just being close to your family. Most of the R&B songs tell a story. They talk about the black culture in good and also in bad ways. The R&B music I find myself listen to is more from my parent’s time. The music back during my parent’s child hood is a lot different than music today. One Major different is music back then had people playing the real instruments and sounds. I hear lectures from people from my parents’ generation how music today is terrible compared to their upcoming music. I personally feel music just changes because it adapts to people’s lifestyle and what they are going through. The Music Industry have always been dominant in society. If you think about every generation can remember listen to their favorite song growing up, and music can sometimes tell you all about yourself.
The word music derives from a Greek meaning art of the Muses. The Muses are the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Calliope, Cilo, Euterpe, Erato, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia and Urania). Which are the personification 's of music. It has had a long journey from those ages until now. There are a variety of ways to go about the subject of music.
