A REFLECTIVE ESSAY This is a reflective essay based on a event which took place in a hospital setting. The aim of this essay is to explore how members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) worked together and communicate with each other to achieve the best patients outcome. Reflection is an everyday process and is very personal matter. Jasper (2003) suggests that reflection is one of the key ways in which we can learn from our experiences. Reflective practice can be defined as process of making sense of events, situations and actions that occur in the workplace (Oelofsen, 2012). There are a different models of reflection. One of them is Johns (1994) model of reflection, this model is based on five cue questions: description, reflection, …show more content…
According to Whyte et al. ((2007) the most frequently team members meet face to face and have the chance to discuss issues and work together, the better communication will be. However, if effective communication among the team is not achieved, errors may occur. It is the major disadvantages of the MDT. The National Patient Safety Agency (2007) communication difficulties identified as a main factor influencing patient outcomes. Stage four of Gibbs(1988) model is an analysis of the event. Communication is defined as a process that involves a meaningful exchange between at least two people to convey facts, needs, opinions, thoughts, feelings or other information through both verbal and non-verbal means, including face to face exchanges and the written word (DH 2010). For the MDT is important to effectively communicate with each other and overcome all communication barriers that may arise because poor communication among health professionals can negatively impact patient care. Atmosphere during the meeting was friendly and thank to this that all team members knew each other from daily meetings effective communication was easily achieved. However, there was a few problems. A noticeable issue was that medical abbreviation used by the doctor were not understood by others members of the team. This led to interruption of his speech to find out about their mining. This is mainly related to the fact that
The model of reflection chosen for this essay is Gibbs’ reflective cycle (1988). This model has been chosen as it has clear systematic headings; it allows the individual to reflect precisely and accurately, (Jasper, 2003). The Gibbs’ reflective cycle incorporates 6 stages of refection (figure 2), (Rolfe et al, 2011).
It is essential that there is effective communication to build an effective team. Effective teams need to work well together and that team cohesiveness depends on building strong relationships among team members. Communication is crucial and is driven by the team leader who will work with the team to establish ground rules and work to bring the team together so that it can accomplish its goals. All teams will go through expected stages of development, from forming to storming to norming and eventually performing according to Tuckman. Navigating through these stages effectively will help teams build relationships which in turn improves communication. Effective team communication can lead to both personal and professional development. Some examples of good communication are the holding of regular catch up meetings, active listening (by management and team members), regular feedback, clear vision and goals. In contrast to the above poor communication skills can have an adverse effect on team working. If team members are not communicating amongst themselves then
What is reflection? Reflection is defined by Wilkinson (1996) as an active process whereby the professional gains an understanding of how historical, social, cultural, cognitive and personal experiences have contributed to professional knowledge and practice.
On many occasions, I have seen situations in which effective communication involving the professional healthcare team played a vital role in the positive outcome of patient care. On the other hand, there have been miscommunication between the healthcare team resulting in situations that could have been tragic to the patient.
According to Schyve, 2007, without comprehension of both participants, effective communication does not occur, the medical delivery of care ends or resulting in medical errors, critical to patient safety and quality of care. Language barriers include cultural differences, various manners of speaking, and poor knowledge

During our team contact development, we communicated thoroughly on establishing clear guidelines and expectations from each team member. It also eliminated ambiguities within the team. We wanted to create an atmosphere where everyone can have their voices expressed and understood. We also committed to face-to-face meetings each week, because physical interactions enable nonverbal clues that are absent in other medium. It helps to increase collaboration as well as bringing awareness of our values, believes, and prejudice to expand our open area on Johari’s Window. Trough team meetings, we were able to build identity-based trust in each other to fulfill their jobs with quality. As a result, we were able to finish our tasks prior

The researchers believe that the communication among healthcare professionals is significantly poor [22]. Gosbee J. mentioned in his article that the poor communication between healthcare team is a waste of time and is the chief culprit behind avoidable errors in clinical practice, which can lead to injury and even death [5].
Reflection is where someone overviews a situation after it has already taken place, for example this may incorporate reviewing considerations and recollections, in subjective acts, for instance, deduction or examination or to help identify changes that need to be made and understanding
Reflection means deliberately taking time to review the happenings of a certain matter and processing how that matter was handled, how it could have been better handled, and how it should be handled in the event that it happens again. This is a practice that I have made a part of my daily life. I reflect over my day on my twenty minute drive home. It allows me to process my day with a critical eye. Often, I feel that I could have handled things differently. There are also days that I feel that I have handled situations remarkably, and I am proud of myself. By critiquing my behaviors and the occurrences that have happened throughout the day, I am able to learn the areas in which I need to grow.
It is difficult to fathom that the intelligent and qualified healthcare professionals who spend nearly a decade in the medical schools, cannot develop a firm grasp on the basic elements of communication. It may be the case there is no lack of individual capacity but internal and external environment influences do not allow healthcare professionals to communicate effectively.
