In the summer of 2015 I received a full scholarship to attend Jonathan R. Reynolds Young Writers Workshop at Denison University, an opportunity that shaped a simply hobby into an enduring passion. As a writer, I am highly critical of my work, however being accepted to the eight-day program merely by my own literary merit definitely served as an example that not only am I capable of writing something worthy, but that I have the power to achieve any goals laid before me. While I attended the program I greeted 35 peers from California all the way to Zimbabwe, South Africa. My core classes consisted of Fiction and Poetry, where I was taught by award winning authors and poets. To be honest, I felt entirely inadequate the first few days. Here I was …show more content…
To be surrounded in an environment where my craft could emerge through new horizons and thrive in a supportive environment warmed me with a new determination. To see such varying personalities all scrambling to the printer, each one getting a concentrated gleam in their eyes as they were writing in a notebook, or to hear the crack in their voice as they read an emotionally draining piece was mind boggling and beyond stunning. I had never seen such persistence and passion emerging through so many people all at once. Success did not matter, to us the value existed in the continuance of our craft. I could ramble about my experience here for days and still not have everything out of my system. To me, writing is not just another prompt given by a teacher, it is the entire pedestal I balance my life on. As long as I am writing I know I can fill the world around me with beauty and importance. My personal statement is my writing. Everything I am slithers through the words I etch into the canvas as I defeat another blank page. If I am read, I am known, and I find that to be the perfect way to realize who I am behind the goofy floral print clothing and the odd 80's style music. I am a writer and because of my Reynolds experience I am now a better
This unit does not introduce much new material. Instead, we expect you to integrate technical and theoretical knowledge acquired from study across your degree. We refer to two frameworks that may support you in carrying out this integration:
Pursuant to California Vehicle Code (40902), I plead not guilty by Trial by Written Declaration of the charges of CVC 22349 (b). I have paid the fine of $352 and have attached the receipt to the case as instructed.
This essay is a reflective essay on my learning development from a young age through to my current position as a University Student. I will be relating my learning development back to two theories of human development, Vygotstsky’s socio-cultural theory and Marcia’s version of Erikson’s theory of identity development. I will identify and discuss the challenge I have faced with my identity and how this has impacted on my development.

The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don’t know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine-tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved to write. But I’ve never had the opportunity to share my work with my peers. Because of this, I’ve decided to start a literacy journal for creative students in RBHS. They can publish their creative writing and art for the entire student body to see. The journal is online, leaving it available to not only students of RBHS but others all around the world. This gives students the reach to inspire everyone, no matter how far they may be. With this club, I hope to accomplish the work of showing others how important writing and art can be.
During that course, I became a stronger writer who was drawn outside of my normally introverted comfort zone. I moved beyond the “check that box” mentality into a mindset established for a journey towards excellence. In the end, my classmates awarded me, the once shy girl, the best actor for my role as John Proctor in the Crucible, and the teacher chose me as the AP Language and Composition Student-of-the-Year. Awards aside, I grew more confident and had a literary piece published later that year. My literary “family” shared in my educational journey as I worked valiantly on a trickle- down effect for my successors, should they choose to emulate our team’s
As I sit here in the midst of the night pondering on all the things that have went wrong in my past. My priorities have been twisted and my vision has been obstructed; the truth hurt way too much to handle and when the real world hit me I was lost. Everything I had worked for was gone and the person I loved most was nowhere to be found -- it was just me, myself, and my notebook. My thoughts tended to unravel when they flowed in-between my fingers, the days flew by when I wrote about them and the weight from my shoulders were lifted off. This was therapy and my introspective journey had begun. Leading up to this point, my life was in disarray and I felt that I needed to take this time to reflect on my wrong doings, set my priorities straight, shift my perspective, and focus on my education in order for me to pursue the finer things in life.
I took this class in order to learn how to write creatively. I have always been writing, because I enjoyed it, but I did not know if I was doing it ‘correctly.’ I did not know how to shape my ideas and thoughts into the form of a story. Also, I thought what I wrote had to be perfect on the first attempt, but I have learned from this class otherwise. Never having the opportunity to take writing classes or art classes in my youth, I thought that if what I created was not perfect, I just did not have the talent for it. My ideas entirely contrast with those of the younger version of me. I took this class because I could learn and work at it. I enjoyed the short story collection Shadow Show written by numerous writers in honor and in celebration of Ray Bradbury. In one of the writer’s
I enrolled in Creative Writing as a challenge to myself to branch outside of my comfort zone of reading, and reverse the roles by becoming a writer. Coming into this class, I had no previous experience creatively writing; however, I knew that in order to go into my desired profession as a developmental editor for young adult fiction, I must know how to do what I want to tell others to do, write a well formed story. Through my experience in this class, I have had the opportunity to learn about the creative writing process and my personal relationship with it as well as dabble in multiple forms of creative writing, for which I would have never otherwise tried.
As the many weeks have passed, and the several eye-opening tutorials have come to completion, I can presently pronounce some growths, experiences, and insights from my second semester as a writing tutor. Overall, there has been a positive atmosphere once again throughout the Writing Center and from all the students who come to visit it. Also, there has been a whopping amount of new learning styles that I have dealt with in the Writing Center this semester. However, none were so unique and eye-opening as one particular session that I had a few weeks ago.
When I began my search for a summer creative writing workshop, I was hopeful. While some descriptions enticed me, the prices were enough to stay me. I had set my sights on Iowa Young Writers’ Studio and I was ready for the challenge which began with me applying for a scholarship within my school. I filled out the application, turned it into the guidance office for submission, and then waited, and waited, and waited. I gathered all the requirements to apply to the actual Studio. I hit the submit button with auspicious thoughts about getting to leave the state for two weeks.
Science grows and evolves just as my inspiration for it does. I have furthered this interest of mine by deciding to dedicate my entire future towards impacting both science and others with my biology major. I have been impacted by science since elementary because since my first time completing a lab in school, I have always been intrigued by the fact the I get to make a hypothesis and later discover if I was correct with my prediction. Although I never won any science experiment event at my school, I never gave up and I was always curious about the way living organisms function everywhere. As a result of always winning a participation ribbon, I was not interested in winning any sort of prize for my science experiments and I decided to complete
I am a senior student, only one last semester to complete my bachelor degree, a step away from medical school. I will leave San Antonio and move-in with my husband in Lubbock, Texas. I will take part in a post-baccalaureate program at Texas Tech Health Science Center, and we will attend the same college while I prepared for medical school. I was smiling on that uncomfortable library chair, picturing all those ideas while spacing out on my inorganic chemistry book after long hours studying for finals. One semester away from taking a big step toward my goals, my heartbeat kept speeding out of excitement; little did I know at the time.
A representative initially garnered my interested in applying to and attending Syracuse University. Earlier this year, my school system hosted a college fair, and Syracuse University was one of the participating schools. Before this, I had not heard much about the school’s academics; in the past, I mainly only heard about the university’s basketball program. I decided to approach the table occupied by the Syracuse University representative to learn more about the school. I was immediately persuaded into applying to Syracuse University by both the location, in the middle of the state of New York, and the possibility of majoring in Aerospace Engineering, which is something I have been interested in since middle school. Many universities do not
