After looking through the reading, I believe my writing is like Janet’s because I prefer being very explicit and “straight to the point” in my papers. Moreover, I tend to use facts from sources that I believe benefit my main idea and avoid responding to the author’s claims as well. I am afraid if I place my own opinions or explanations within a paper, that it would take away the focus of the topic. I think that I hold more of an information-transfer model of knowledge more than the constructivist model of knowledge. From my previous experience of writing papers before college, there was a structural guideline of how a student should write papers and it had little room to place your own thoughts into it. Much like Janet, my lack education surrounding
My writing skills have fluctuated throughout the semester. I feel, although, I have mastered leads and headline writing. Leads and headlines were the first writing skills we practiced and have continued to practice throughout the entire semester. The continuous practice of leads and headline writing throughout the semester, I feel confident in my ability to write concise, eye-catching leads and headlines. For writing assignment three I needed to provide a follow-up headline and corresponding lead for a criminal case. The headline had to focus on the upcoming sentencing hearing because it was the newest information about the case. In order to do so, as I mention in my blog entry, I had to write several drafts for both my headline and lead. [INSERT BLOG PICTURE] After many drafts of the lead I settled on a summary-lead because the article was a follow-up story about an established criminal case. I wrote the headline after I wrote the lead because the headline had to be a shorter, more intriguing version of the lead. After many drafts I finally wrote a six worded, eye-catching headline that was about the sentencing hearing. [INSERT WRITING ASSIGNMENT
This particular article has been of quite some help with improving my writing abilities! Do you ever find yourself rewriting instead of writing? If you are a writer and are in need of helpful hints with what I think is the most important part of the writing process, revision. In Internal Revision the author, Donald Murray, emphasizes this writing skill that is the least used but one of the most important.
Improving my writing has not been easily achieved, because the last six months have been some of the hardest I have experienced in a long time, they required me to make many sacrifices in my personal life. The two months that COMN 155 required were the most exhausting out of the three courses I took at SAIT, and with the help of wonderful instructors, many aspects or my writing improved gradually over time. From spelling, punctuation and word choice to complete understanding and reproduction of a text; ELF courses were the best decision I made to improve my skills.
Over the course of my studies at university, I have grown and learned more about academic writing and numerous writing styles. I believe there is so much room for me to master my writing skills to succeed and complete my degree and improve my academic writing and personal skills through more practice. However, I have become concerned with my first attempt submitting my piece of paper through the online test in the Writers’ Diet diagnostic tool and was labelled ‘flabby’ in my writing. Analysing my errors and referring to the textbook ’Communication Toolkit’ by Grellier and Goerke (2014), also submitting my piece of writing to Grammarly and paper rater I was able to measure my weakness in the area of sentence structure, punctuation and grammar.
I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of “refreshing” to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write an intelligent paper will benefit you not just through school but also through life. Writing skills are a reflection of intelligence and I want to perfect my writing the best that I can. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. All the outcomes are clear and I like how we are expected to reach them. I am a little bit scared with the grammar part and the specific skills that I should develop for this course. My writing skills are not the best’s, since English is not my first language. I love to read, and since I moved to US I started doing it in English. This is helping me to have a better understanding of the language, but I haven’t be paying attention to the writing. I hope to develop the good skills writing that are expected from me.
When rereading my major paper one, I noticed a few issues but also a few improvements. My writing had improved from exercise one tremendously, I managed to really focus on making this paper an informational paper whereas in my other writing I struggled with putting my opinion in. My writing also improved in the grammatical sense I noticed fewer comma splices and run on sentences. My paper had taken on a professional tone, that my previous writing lacked. Areas my writing could still use some improvement though is in introducing quotations, when reviewing back through my paper I noticed many of the quotations were awkwardly placed or just not introduced correctly. My writing could also see improvement in avoiding the repetition of certain
My writing skills developed drastically. I went into elementary school not knowing a word of English becuase my parents spoke Cantonese at home. Therefore, I struggled in elementary and middle school. However, the teachers at my high school have taught me amply. Therefore, English is a strong subject of mine. I learns the conventions of writing a well-structured and drive essay. However, I struggle in communicating. For example, I am slightly fearful of presenting, but I push myself into producing well-developed lessons. Additionally, I rely heavily off a script and is a skill I am actively working to
Throughout the year, I have learned a variety of writing skills that I have been able to apply to my essays. I have attained skills that have helped me write better argumentative essays, creative essays, and narrative essays. I have also overcome many of weaknesses this year, but I still have weaknesses that I need to work on in the 10th Grade. This year I have been able to strengthen many aspects of my writing.
Another key writing skill I have mastered in this class is how to develop an idea. Even though I understood that a writer should use fact and examples to support an argument, I failed to create texts to convince readers. In this class, I have learned how to use rhetorical strategies to develop an idea and appeal to readers effectively. For example, in my position essay, I built logos by crafting a clear thesis statement, providing solid evidence to support my claim, and arranging my argument in a reasoned manner. I enhanced my credibility through acknowledging the opposite view and documenting sources appropriately. I also engaged the readers’ emotions by using examples. By recognizing and incorporating these strategies in my essays, I can
In the past, I have always thought of style as an acquired skill. The author of this article immediately shoots this belief down by saying that style is not something you have or don't have. Rather style a way of expressing your attitude and feelings about a topic. The author then breaks down the eight guidelines of writing in "plain style". Some of these guidelines will be useful for constructing my final draft this week. For example, stating the action in the verb is something I need to review. In many of my sentences, I overuse helping verbs and keep the action verb too far from the subject. I will analyze if any of my sentences sound redundant or if they are too lengthy also. I will be keeping this chapter near me as I proceed to finish
When I looked back in my paragraph, I decided to elaborate more on how the place impacted me. Also I elaborated more on the place, like how it feels, smells and looks. In my first paragraph I wrote about what I saw when I was walking to school. When I went to my comp fellow we discussed how I can improve my writing, which was by putting more detailed information.
Reflecting on my writing skills before taking composition I, I discovered inaccuracies in my writing that could have been avoided had I selected this class first. Learning in the last two unit’s ways that could have made my writing more efficient, as well as captivating to the persons evaluating my work. Also, reading unit I, the information was very informative and has increased my knowledge as it relates to writing. Understanding that a person can be an excellent writer, however, if their information is not targeting the audience to whom they are speaking to, can be a waste of time. Furthermore, the first thing I normally do when working on an assignment is to gather my thoughts by writing down everything that is pertinent to my project.
America is a place full of immigrants with no single ethnicity or race. America can also be referred to as the ?Melting Pot? because it consists ingredients of multicultural backgrounds. There are cultures such as French American, Asian American, Italian American and African American. I am Mexican American. My culture has helped me to become the writer I am today. My bicultural background and constant moving back and forth from Mexico to America has both influenced and weakened my writing. Although I was born in America, my Mexican culture has always been a part of my life. I have spent the majority of my life in Mexico, and Spanish is my first
This fall semester in ESL 91has been pretty interesting, and so far successful. The main object of this semester was to improve our essay writing. We were taught various lab techniques that helped us to improve our English writing skills, such as using appropriate verb tense and how to write a research paper with a works cited. Through my work on the research paper I have learned how to write in an academic style, how to find appropriate sources from an academic database, and how to cite my sources. Most of all, I can say that my reading skills have improved because the research for our papers required me to do a lot of critical reading.
