Writing can mean many things to different people, but for me, it is a creative outlet and hobby as well as a valued professional skill. In my writing, I attempt to use my most descriptive language—without going over the top—throughout a work in order to create the most vivid images possible for the reader. This has been one of my main goals, and in this aspect, I’m sure my best paper is the first essay I wrote this semester titled “My 7 and 1/2 Acres.” I believe this is the most effectively descriptive work I have written. I do not have a favorite out of my essays and papers but if I did this one might be it. Another primary objective for me was to improve my grammar and punctuation skills. Commas were terrifying enough on their own, but
In William Cronon’s book Changes in the Land: Indians, Colonists, and the Ecology of New England, he discuses the ecological history of New England from the late sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century. He demonstrates how the New Englanders changed the land by illustrating the process of the change in the landscape and the environment. In the Preface Cronon states, “My thesis is simple: the shift from Indian to European dominance in New England entailed important changes—well known to historians—in the ways these people organized their lives, but it also involved fundamental reorganizations—less well-known to historians—in the region's plant
Learning about the different type of writing styles and steps of writing was the most interesting. Descriptive essays are my favorite to read and write. If I was to write about a person, I would select a dominant impression of the person using details to convey that impression. I would also choose details to support the topic sentence. Descriptive essays help give readers vivid image in their mind. When I write descriptive essays, I use 4 steps ; I select a subject, Select details that support my
From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
In English 1101 we wrote several pieces of writing. Each piece was unique and I learned new things with everyone. My favorite piece of writing was the research paper because I could choose the topic and it was a topic I think is very interesting. Even though it was probably the hardest one to write I thought it was my best piece and I loved my topic of Genetically Engineered Babies. My least favorite was the memoir because I struggled writing it and I had trouble picking a topic. It turned out being a really good memoir but I didn’t love writing it. My strongest piece is probably my common app essay because I put everything I was into that paper. My paper was called “I’m So Much More Than a Test Score”. It was really powerful and explained
Improvement to my grammar is the second area I’ve developed in this course. “It’s the little things that matter”, said by many people, and the way this relates to my second reasoning is due to the fact little grammatical errors matter too. When writing papers, I learned the skill to reread my sentences repeatedly, and see if it sounds right as an overall sentence. This skill, not only helped improve my writing, but also my texting. Improving my grammar is also useful when creating a resume, and applying for jobs and even scholarships. Overall, it is a skill I am pleased I learned to develop, and hope it improves even more over time.
My love for writing isn’t as strong as my love for reading. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of expressing my thoughts in words, but I always struggle with things such as punctuation, spelling, grammar, and word choice. I think I’m better at writing personal narratives, and persuasive essays, but I‘m always unsure of where to put my commas. Writing has always given me the pleasure of challenging me, and I hope that this year I would become a better
Like many communities, Forest Acres is a community that has strengths and capacities that make the area unique. In terms of safety this community is working to provide a safe environment for residents. According to Forest Acres (2017), it is reported that the community had very few violent crimes with only one murder, three rapes, eleven robberies, and forty-six assault crimes. Therefore, it can be concluded the community is striving to meet the goal of keeping residents safe from violent crimes so they can live in the community without the worry of becoming a victim. Although violent crimes are limited, Forest Acres experiences more property crimes when compared to South Carolina’s average. The chances of becoming a victim of property crime in Forest Acres is 1 in 19, with South Carolina as a state being only 1 in 30. Therefore, it is assumed this is an upscale community that is vulnerable to break ins and is working to find solutions to help residents keep their belongings safe from burglaries. Also, it is reported that the crime index for Forest Acres is
I hope you are as excited as I am about taking this last class of the program. I am enrolled as Robert France but friends and family have always called me “Jeff” (from my middle name). I live in Columbus, Ohio and have been an RN for 27 years. I finally decided to go back to school a couple of years ago to earn my BSN so that I could better serve my patients. I currently do not have plans to study for an advanced degree, but since I work at the OSU Medical Center, that may be an option in the future.
As I take Com 101 this semester I have set many goals that I plan on following up on 100%. I do love to write but I’m not good at writing at all. I would love to get better with grammar when I finish this class for one of my goals. I would also like to get better at my word choice for explaining my points more thoroughly. I do use the word “thing” a lot that is very vague because on most my papers that word would be circled.
Since becoming a student at Tri-C, I have written many papers of various lengths. Each paper has presented its own set of challenges such as grammar, punctuation, subject development, and continuity. When writing, I feel more confident about grammar and punctuation than I do subject development and continuity. I tend to edit and reduce a paper’s content so much that it becomes heavy and dense. As a result, the content develops too fast, usually leaving me with a feeling of, “where do I go from here?” Although I feel pretty confident about grammar and punctuation, the web information provided in the Week 1 folder helped to clear up some foggy areas pertaining to subject/verb agreement, comma, semi colon, and colon usage. Overall, I feel that
One of my strengths in this essay was my use to descriptive words. I used long

Throughout this course, we’ll study the American landscape of our yard, coiled line of the garden hose, muddy furrows in the grass awaiting our analysis, what’s called close reading of the ground. And somewhere something will yip in pain perhaps, a paw caught in a wire, or else the furred and oily yowling of desire. And flickering beyond the fence, we’ll see the slatted lives of strangers. The light
Nature isn't limited to landscapes. It can be behavior or physical, plants and animals. Wild magnolias and ivy that grow on century old trees rooted firmly near the edge of swampy bayous and orchards that hold fresh fruit on its branches, wild horses stampeding around canyons, and hummingbirds flying to a sweet flower. The definition of natural is healthy and clean, it's raw and pure. It's untouched by the hands of men and unpredictable as if it is has a mind of its own.
This semester we tried to learn and discuss the influence of research work in landscape architecture design. Landscape architecture is becoming more and more important in people’s daily life today and it is essential for us to have a good awareness of how research work would affect landscape architecture design. I will illustrate this point from three parts: (1) why is research an integral part of landscape architecture? (2) what roles do it fill? (3) how will landscape architecture be impacted by over the fifty years as a result of landscape architecture research?
