“Service Learning is a form of practical experience that enhances learning in all areas of a nursing program, and the experience of service learning reinforces the moral and civic values inherent in serving others (Ferris State University School of Nursing, 2015, p. 1). Consequently, to enhance my learning I completed my service learning at the Interprofessional Wellness Clinic, which focuses on diabetes education at Ferris State University. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to reflect in detail about my service learning experiences and how this service learning helped me achieve the nursing BSN program outcomes.
Reflection on Service Learning Service Learning before the nursing program to me seemed like another opportunity to complete more volunteering hours for my resume. In fact, I thought that I will be able to quickly completed the recommended hours and not think too much

Moreover, the further I learned about the concept of SL the better I was able to understand why SL is an important process for the nursing program. In fact, I was able to learn a lot from my experience at the Interprofessional Wellness Clinic. Subsequently, some of the things I experienced from my service learning were collaborating with students in other disciplines such as; optometry, nursing, pharmacy, experience interviewing patients, taking blood samples for hemoglobin A1c, blood glucose, and total cholesterol levels, and learning about diabetes and its effects on different parts of the body. Therefore, from my SL experience at the wellness clinic, I was able to confidently interact with patients, learned how to work with other medical disciplines in order to use all these experiences in the healthcare field. Moreover, I was able to apply all my experiences at the clinic to complete numerous nursing outcomes, which helped me, complete and learn from my nursing outcomes. Consequently, this service
In order to gain the necessary skills needed for social work, service learning is necessary due to the fact that it serves as an introduction to skills that may be utilized later in the field. Completing my service learning hours at Harvest Hope Food Bank provided me with the necessary experiences to ensure I am able to impact clients positively and in a more professional and ethical manner. Values and ethics, connections to generalist practice, and experiences with the organization all shared important roles in helping me comprehend the importance of interactions with others in communities, resulting in being able to better understand the various clients I may encounter.
A Service Learning project is one of the project requirements to complete the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through Ferris State University (FSU). My Service Learning experience was completed at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in November, 2014. This paper includes details of the facility along with the contact information for the coordinator of the project. A description of my role as a volunteer, critical reflection of my experience, and a synthesis of the Service Learning are also included.
For the Service Learning Assignment, I decided to volunteer at Northwind Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. My current interest is working in the medical field that deals with babies. The service learning placement that best fit my schedule was Northwind Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. This organization works with mostly senior citizens that need special care at all times. There were times where individuals that were not senior citizens that came there because it is not strictly a nursing home. The residents are not able to care for themselves and need constant supervision to ensure their safety. Some of the resident may require physical therapy. My responsibilities was to interact with the different residents on each visit and complete
In “The Power of One: Using Service Learning to Promote Community Engagement”, Crystal Shannon explores the influence of service learning on first year nursing students. Most registered nurses work within their community and develop close relationships with their patients. The service learning curriculum allows nursing students to develop skills and relationships within their community. Service learning creates a better awareness among students while promoting learning in the medical field. It’s a more realistic application of the course material.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Service Learning Project (SLP) conducted at Southwest General Hospital on the CareView system. CareView is a patient monitoring system that includes cameras and sensors that are linked to a computer at the nurse's station which allows delivery of real-time visual monitoring around the clock. This SLP will focus on four key areas. Those areas are as follows: the establishment of the learning outcome of the SLP, the mechanics of the SLP, the community relationships resulting from
Service Learning is an educational strategy set in place to enlighten students with instruction and experience, in addition to improve learning , teach responsibility, and support the community. Service learning is vital to the development of the student, given that it intertwines academic and personal development together. It is aimed to enhance a student’s learning in all aspects of life.
As a nurse, I have worked around the elderly for the last eight years, and before that I was a Certified Nursing Assistant for approximately 3 years. Over the years I have witness the end of many lives. I have seen residents pass with a multitude of family members and I have seen a resident pass with just a staff member holding their hand. I have been able to be a part of many lives and have witnessed how activities can make a great impact on these same lives. This is why I chose to complete my service learning project in a long term nursing facility to be a first-hand participant in these activities.
Service learning is an important element of nursing education. It is not merely service which benefits the community, nor is it simply providing community health promotion. As the name suggests, service learning also facilitates student learning opportunities that differ from the classroom or clinical experience. The senior center group project was valuable, in that it allowed for the enhancement of personal health care knowledge, as well as the opportunity to share that knowledge with the older adult community.
I signed up to volunteer at a local nursing home. Because my father works there, I have been there many times before. However, volunteering there was very new to me.
Involvement in service learning opportunity further develops students’ responsibility as future advanced practice nurses to think critically, prioritize, engage in cost-effective resource utilization, and act in a culturally sensitive manner. These actions and abilities are important to the delivery of care to patients with diverse cultural backgrounds during international experiences.33 Upon returning to the academic setting, the NP student engages in case study construction and discussion, peer education, and self-reflection. The latter is a critical part of them developing cultural
I have completed my service learning as of March 18, 2017, and I can say it was a lot of fun. Me and five other friends enjoyed our spring break the same way other college kids did, but in the process, we cleaned up our environment. With the beaches crowded with spring breakers, the beach also became littered with trash that would have harmfully impacted our ecosystem. Our group spent about two hours walking along the beach picking up garbage, while avoiding the overly intoxicated. Along the way, we listened to good music, met interesting people and felt as though we were doing society and Earth a great service. Two weeks prior my sister, cousin, mother, and I took a trip down to South Beach where we also performed a trash cleanup on the beach.
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service-learning is defined as, “learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement” (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members
One concern of universities that are considering adding service learning is that not enough students will be interested in participating. There are several ways to get students interested in service learning. One way to get their attention is to give students who participate extra benefits. Some examples of extra benefits would be extra credit in their courses or even offering free credit hours. Another thing that would appeal to students is that the class would meet less often because one on the classes meeting times would be their service learning project. Another benefit of service learning is
For my service learning aspect of this course, I volunteered at Lawrence Catholic Academy. There I worked one-on-one with a fourth grade boy who was struggling in all of his subjects. His grades were not very high and he needed a lot of extra help. One reason as to why he wasn’t doing well in school was because he rarely ever did his homework and therefore he always fell behind in class. Another thing that I had found out just a couple of weeks ago is that he was very sick last year and he had to miss half a year of school. Since he wasn’t in school for half of the year, he didn’t learn the material that he needs to know and therefore he is even further behind compared to the rest of his peers. I would always try my best to help him understand
As a student, I have become more aware of the needs of my community. I have always worked at being active in my community to help those in need. Most of my volunteer work revolved around collecting donations and lending a helping hand at shelters. My volunteer work did not usually involve an academic base. I was not concerned with the ins and outs of why homelessness was a problem or the difficulty women faced finding assistance to escape abusive relationships. I just knew the shelters were always in need of donations and that is where I found myself helping most. In this paper, I will describe a personal experience I have had with service learning. I will also select one service learning idea from the National Student Nurses’ Association planning guideline that interests me and describe how this type of experience will enhance my nursing student experience.
