The building blocks of New Mexico are Culture and Tradition just like the building blocks of my home town Hatch are Chile and Farming. Building blocks are the structure of everything and stand as a framework of underlying support. My building blocks are mainly Irish and Scottish with a little Spanish showing the diversity of my blood but I live in a mainly Spanish oriented town making for a unique combination. Being mainly of Irish and Scottish decent yet growing up in a Spanish oriented town I was exposed to many different cultures and traditions that I have adopted as my own, which has made me appreciate the influence of culture and traditions. Hatch has a very large Hispanic population of about 90% and being a part of the other 10% I got …show more content…
My foundation for medicine started back in 2008 when I lost my grandmother to cancer. We were close and watching her go through that was very hard on me. After she passed I promised I would help people and that’s when I started to think about medicine. Then in 2013 my mother found lumps in her breasts and had to fight with the insurance company for a year to get a Prophylactic Bilateral Mastectomy. Watching her fight for her right to have a lifesaving procedure was what made me confirm medicine was the career path I wanted. I want to make sure that everyone in New Mexico gets the best possible care and I want to give back to small communities because I come from one. My foundation is built on the promise that I will help people and that everyone gets the care that they need and deserve. I will uphold that promise. Small Communities and large communities throughout New Mexico deserve a great doctor capable of delivering the best quality care and I want to be that doctor. I have the strong foundation to go far in medicine and ensure that New Mexico Healthcare is the best it can be for everyone in our
New Mexico is a southwestern state and was admitted to the union on January 6, 1912. It is the 47th state and considered to be a mountain state. Its culture has been heavily influenced by the aboriginal people as well as colonists. It was home first to the Native Americans, which included the Apache, Navajo, and Pueblo people. It was taken over after the colonization of the Spanish in 1598. Thereafter, it became a part of Mexico and later a US territory. Following the Mexican-American War, it was made a state of North America. New Mexico has the highest number of Hispanics and 2nd highest number of Native Americans in its population. The cultural influences of these groups of people can be seen throughout the state, including on the state flag; the colors gold and scarlet, represent the royal standards of Spain. The sun symbol comes from the Pueblo tribes,
Not only do I have a good understanding of the patient population I want to work with, I want to help reshape healthcare. I particularly want to improve the access of primary care to medically underserved populations. Everyone deserves equal access to healthcare and there should be no disparity in the quality of care provided. Therefore, each additional encounter I had with a PA or a patient has elevated my passion for helping people in need.
When challenged as to why I would want to pursue a career in medicine, my response includes an acknowledgement of the realities of an intensely stressful and academically rigorous profession, but also a recognition of the rewards that come with having the ability to make a real difference to peoples’ lives. We depend on medicine in our weakest times and seek strength in those who dedicate themselves to research, prevention and treatment and I believe I have both the compassion and motivation to make a positive contribution.
I have been given many opportunities to help others and make an impact in Johnson City through organizations like the Family Medicine Interest Group at ETSU, serving as the coordinator for student involvement in free clinics. I have also been able to make an impact through medicine in Cleveland, TN by way of the Good Samaritan Clinic. This is a free clinic in downtown Cleveland that I have been volunteering at for the past seven years. I have also been directly involved in the start-up of the Just Care clinic in Mountain City, TN, a medical student ran free clinic in rural Appalachia. I was also been able to spend time in rural Guatemala with a medical team from my undergraduate university helping diagnose, treat, and care for patients whom receive little to no regular healthcare. From my own first hand experiences in both Guatemala and my time spent in the Just Care and Good Samaritan Clinics, I have seen the impact that an inadequate health care system can have on a population. I hope to use my medical and public health training in areas that do not have adequate access to health
In 1521, the fall of Tenochtitlan proved to be an integral piece in the Spanish conquest of Mexico. After months of devastating warfare between the Aztecs and the Spanish as well as the infection of smallpox into the Aztec population, the Spanish conquered New Spain (Mexico) as their own, resulting in the Spanish occupation and rebuilding of Tenochtitlan. The reshaping of the city was an arduous and complex feat to say the least, as Hernan Cortés faced many challenges following the satisfying victory of the conquest. In order to determine these various challenges involved in post-conquest Mexico, one must assess the various feats Cortés struggled through as well as Carlos I’s attempts to deal with the chaos in Mexico. The most decisive endeavours that the Spaniards faced included: fixing a city of ruins, incorporating the indigenous peoples into society, and creating a Christian basis throughout the land. Thus, post-conquest Mexico faced a magnitude of challenges based on the socio-political, religious, and economic values necessary to conceive their perfect image
A typical family in mexico is usually lacking basic community services. Usually houses are made from mud and supplies that are found around the property including brick, mud, wood, and other things. The homes usually have improvised rooms made with construction materials on a relative's property or have rented rooms with shared facilities.

My biggest interest is to reduce health care disparities. Where I live, I noticed how many people don’t have the finances for health care. Many children suffer when they are sick or have injuries due to them not having the correct health care. I wish to make a stop to that and see minorities grow as a whole. My main reason for wanting to become a pediatrician is to simply give a helping hand to families who can’t afford for their child to get a physical. I want to be that doctor that people can truly depend on. I am honestly tired of seeing minorities not get the right medical attention due to their finances when everyone should be granted some type of aid. I believe that I can make a change with reducing health care disparity within my community
When people think of Mexico they think Spanish, but that is wasn’t always the way it was. For thousands of years the Spanish hadn’t even heard of the New World. Or what is now known as Mexico. Various Mesoamerican tribes ruled it.
I have an desire to practice medicine in a underserved community because I have found during my various community service activities that I enjoy making a difference in an community that desperately seek adequate care and attention. I discovered that the disadvantage community are extremely grateful and well deserving. I am also passionate about serving disadvantaged communities through making sure they receive the most state-of-the-art care and latest medical
The suns rays, blazing down onto the sand of New Mexico. Mirages appearing appearing on the horizon in such fine detail, you could reach and grab onto them. The sand slowly blowing across the harsh landscape, the bushes swaying slightly, trees were sparse, and life was all buried away. The gigantic mountains covered the backdrop of the landscape, they seemed to be reaching straight for the sky.
In 10 years, I hope to be a graduate from the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine and be a practicing physician in Southern California. Though I will thoroughly explore all specialties, I have a particular interest in pediatrics. With frequent visits to the doctor’s office due to illnesses and infections from my vesicoureteral reflux, the health care setting became a place I was comfortable with. I developed a strong relationship with my pediatrician and aspired to be like him. Becoming a pediatrician would allow me the privilege of watching my patients grow up and develop a relationship with them and their families. The root of my interest lies with my love for working with children. Throughout high school, I thoroughly enjoyed my time volunteering at a summer camp for elementary school children. My recent experiences tutoring disadvantaged children through Project Literacy at UCLA and volunteering at Kids Come First Community Health Center in Ontario have confirmed my decision to pursue pediatrics. My time at Kids Come First has exposed me to the health issues those in Inland Southern California are facing. Through my time at UCR School of Medicine, I hope to develop strong relationships with nearby hospitals and clinics, so that I would have the opportunity to continue serving that region. I would also love to incorporate my passion in community service into my career. I want to not only focus on healing individual patients, but improve the health of
This coming fall, I have plans to attend University of California Santa Barbara where I will major in biology. While there I plan to attain a 4.0. During my time at this university I have intent to receive my CNA license and work an entry level position in medicine to help pay for college as well as giving me experience and appreciation for those who make doctors and nurses lives much easier. Upon graduation I will go to medical school to become an Emergency Room Physician. During my life as a doctor I would like to dedicate approximately a month of every year participating in the Doctors Without Borders program. I believe that it is important to help not only your own, but those around you.
I’ve lived a life of happiness and joy, and have had the distinct pleasure of being inspired by my surroundings. As simplistic as it sounds, my family has inspired a path for my future and it is now time I walk it. I come from a family of health care professionals specializing in various fields, everything from pediatricians, nurses, dentists, orthopedists, and surgeons, to primary care physicians. I have learned that there are many roads to choose from in life, but I feel as though I have always known the road I would take, well up until this very moment.
New Mexico is a beautiful and interesting country that is waiting to be explored. New Mexico is a livable country for all ages because of their social consequences (low housing, great paycheck, great education) and environmental consequences (less polluted cities and less light pollution).
