I have made an impact at my high school in several ways through clubs, associations and volunteering work, but the one I would like to highlight is peer tutoring. Erie County, where I go to school, is having an economic downturn, as major corporations have been downsizing or leaving the county in search of better prospects and opportunities for them. The schools have faced significant budget cuts, resulting in several schools being shut down or consolidated. Peer tutoring provided growth and learning opportunities for both the students and myself, resulting in a double benefit for the school and the district, attempting to support students with limited financial and community resources. Tutoring also benefitted my peers by giving them additional
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
While in High School, I was involved in the Peer Tutoring program. Although I had already been involved with the several other programs, I knew from an early age that a Special Education teacher was what I wanted to do. Helping students achieve their goals and help them to succeed in life was my true calling. But the desire to help the most challenged student drove me beyond regular education. The memories of my Peer tutoring experience kept me striving to be a
Throughout the past four years of high school, I have done my best to try and stay actively involved in the community. I have been presented with some amazing volunteer opportunities such as Huron Safety Town, STAR Leadership Camp, American Red Cross, and Huron High School Girl’s Basketball Biddy Program. I spent over 24 hours at Huron Safety Town where I was able to help young students, mainly those going into Kindergarten, learn how to stay safe while on the road. I was also able to spend over 24 hours at STAR Leadership Camp where I was a councilor to those going into the sixth grade. I made sure that each student understood the importance of being a leader in today's society and how important they are to Huron’s community. Through National Honor Society I have been able to maintain in constant contact, approximately 10 hours, with the American Red Cross by volunteering in monthly blood drives. I have also dedicated 16 hours of my time to those young girls interested in someday being a varsity basketball player through the Biddy Basketball Program.
As an artist, I encourage everyone around me to do things uniquely their way. We all bring our own experiences to our perspective of life, and sometimes we forget that. Being aware of others’ lives is important, but understanding others’ views and feelings is more crucial to fostering a supportive community. Therefore I remember to be sensitive to the issues of those around me. Whenever I recognize a need, I address it without hesitation. At school I provided free tutoring at lunch because I saw my peers were having trouble without individual attention. After two years of trying to singlehandedly fill the gap between student knowledge and in-class teaching, I realized it was fruitless, especially in math as the rigor increased. I joined forces with some classmates to establish our school’s chapter with Mu Alpha Theta and peer-to-peer math tutoring. I don’t seek praise or fame in my help of others; knowing that I am contributing to my community is enough for
Since entering high school, I’ve participated in many organizations that have sought to better not only our school but also the community as a whole. For example, since my freshman year, I have been a part of the Goliad Student Council. By being a member of such a club, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to interact with Goliad’s community through various means. I’ve painted the faces of children at town festivals, cleaned the town auditorium for auctions, and I’ve handled sports concession stands for hours on end. Through each of these activities, along with the others I’ve done for student council, I’ve managed to involve myself with multiple residents of Goliad while also working towards a fulfilling goal.
Contributing to my school and community is a true passion. I am involved in programs like the Red Cross, Angel Tree created by The Salvation Army, and Olive Garden’s Pasta For Pennies. My school hosted a Red Cross blood drive, and I was responsible for promoting the event to individuals within our school. We had a total of two hundred students donate blood. We helped save a total of six hundred lives! I also assisted the Program Angel Tree by promoting the program among the student organizations within my school. Our involvement has helped hundreds of less fortunate children and seniors receive necessities and gifts! As a team, the student council also collects spare change from students in our school. Our collaboration with Olive Garden has helped fund the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth campaign. I am truly glad that my contributions have made an impact within my community and society! My strong involvement in extracurricular activities has helped me become knowledgeable, principled, and a risk-taker. I carry a strong sense of respect and righteousness, and I approach unfamiliar opportunities with a vision and great courage. I seek to set an example for members within my school, community, state, and
The great Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” I deem this to be a vital question that everyone should ask themselves. I wholeheartedly agree that serving others impacts your community in a positive light. Therefore, I've made it my duty to volunteer with students throughout my community. This is because I’m very proactive about seeking change in the area I grew up in.
I know understand how privileged I am to have a good community that supports my academic endeavors and gives me the opportunity to meet my maximum potential. Helping students who do not meet the national literacy standards is a way to give them the chance to excel in life. This opportunity, something I didn’t value at first, showed me how small acts of kindness can transform the lives of others. My time at Birch Grove not only made those struggling students go home with better communication skills, but it also gave me a lot of satisfaction and made me proud of what I was doing. I felt as though I was changing the world one child at a time and volunteering at elementary schools is now one of my strongest passions.
I spent my middle school years and early high school years helping out in Mrs. DiIanni’s 3rd grade classroom at Lee Elementary in Middleville. While helping Mrs. DiIanni with little things like filling and grading papers, I also helped the kids with problems they were working on. I had a lot of fun helping them with educational art projects and learn to write in cursive. I had also helped organize some of their holiday parties, and well as joined them in the festivities. I had done so many things with these kids and I hopeI at least impacted one of their lives.
In this reflective essay I will provide an analysis of the counselling session I conducted and recorded. This will include a summary of the session. I will also describe the micro and advanced counselling skills utalised, as well as a critical evaluation of their effectiveness. A discussion of my application of these skills, as well as areas of possible improvement will supported by reference to relevant literature.
Last school year, three of my peers and I decided that our high school needed a peer-tutoring club, so the last few months of my junior year and the first few weeks of my senior year were dedicated to starting this organization. We organized the structure and goals of the club, and presented our ideas to the administrators. Once we got our approval, we immediately began planning lessons. Two days a week we meet with groups of students that come to us for help on improving their ACT scores or general grades. Our service is open to any and every student. We have tutored students in dual-enrollment courses and in standard academic classes.
First and foremost, I think it is a wonderful idea to gain the perspective of your students and hear how each students experience was throughout the essay process. The most challenging aspect of writing this essay is writing about something you are not interested in writing about. I anticipate getting a good passing grade in this class, because I do believe I deserve it. I do a lot of drafting before I actually write the essay. Peer Mark definitely helped me with my own writing by both reviewing their writing and hearing the suggestions from my classmates. There was only one issue I had using Peer Mark. The icon was deceiving and unclear on where I needed to insert a comma. The icon that inserts a comment is so big that it looks like the error
“Be a reflective teacher. Honestly look at what you do from time to time. Evaluate the purpose of your role as a teacher.” (Robert John Meenham, 2011)
Peer Tutoring has been shown an effective learning strategy and innovate solution in multidisciplinary classroom structures. As teachers seek productive methods to incorporate meaningful learning and maintain efficient time management in the classroom, peer tutoring has been implemented as an effective option. Through the process of peer tutoring, the tutor and the tutee both gain individualized skills, immediate performance feedback, continuous progress monitoring, increased peer relationships and self-esteem improvement. With such a strong record of effectiveness, this study proposes an examination of the effectiveness of peer
As a practicing teaching, it is responsibility to create and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for students. Whilst on professional experience at a local school in Cairns, I taught a series of lessons (artefact 4) for a year 8 Health and Physical Education class. In order to effectively teach each lesson, I had to manage the classroom activities and challenging behaviours. I used the ten micro-skills for classroom management to not only manage students’ behaviour but also ensure inclusive student participation and engagement.
