The last time I wrote an academic paper was in the fall of 2010. The topic was The “Pipe-Line” & At-Risk Youth. Upon reading all the data and research it was clear that the research topic I selected was too broad. My professor suggested that I narrow my research in order to pinpoint my thesis and purpose. The suggestion assisted me in developing a specific topic, which ensured that my research met the qualitative and quantitative properties. Eventually I passed the course with an A-. I believe the Webinar Crash Course in Scholarly Writing is helpful and insightful. It will allow me to produce the same results similarly to my experience in 2010. The video suggests that “voice, evidence, paragraphs and argument” is the writing tools for success in scholarly writing. The video also recommends that academic writing is a “skill that can be learned by immersing yourself in scholarly literature.” Walden University Writing Center. (2015c). Scholarly writing: Overview. I enjoy writing sermons every week, journal writing and essays with students in the school setting. Communicating ones feelings on paper is very therapeutic and is incorporated in my therapeutic practice. Through reflections I am always thinking about life. I’ve trained myself to carry a small notebook with me or keep it by my bed because writing is essential to my development as a person. It is my desire to write a memoir about my life in foster care to share my journey and experience in order to give someone else an encouraging message. Some of the academic experiences that will be an asset to the DSW Program are that I am surrounded by colleagues’ and family members who are educators. By working in a high school setting there is an allowance to implement the academic writing skills that I am learning to the students during the homeroom and the College Readiness
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.
mentioned previously, this helps to target at-risk youth, this is achieved because the system is designed to reach those that do not fit in well with the current centralized system, which also targets those that have dropped out of school as well.
I chose my memoir for AP English Language and Composition as my best piece because it’s received a ninety percent and is the written work I’m most proud of. The reader should expect to find information about me that one wouldn’t know by simply looking at me. One will find how overcoming my own challenges and one that was thrown at me made the person I am today. One would discover my passion and determination to pursue a career in family law. The impressions I hope the reader gains about myself after viewing this piece is that I am a methodical writer as well as a psychological person who tends to hide it.

In chapter 9, Writing Across the Curriculum, the process of reading and writing was investigated and explained in comparison to one another. The reading-writing connection focuses on drawing from students’ prior knowledge and cognitive processes in order to build learning. The authors mentioned that the writing process is a strong tool for exploring and clarifying meaning and the two major instructional components used are writing to learn (WTL) and writing in disciplines (WID). The chapter also focused on the subareas of academic journals and writing disciplines.
A staggering 200,000 children in the UK, have a parent imprisoned each year. However, one of the most alarming issues is the impact incarceration has on the wellbeing of the child. Children of incarcerated parents are affected in many ways such as: underachieving at school, experiencing conduct and mental health issues, emotional difficulties and, most importantly, the likeliness of carrying on to offend. Hello, my name is Yolanda Page. I graduated from high school in 1998. When I was a teenager I use to love to write in my journal, but, that ended over 20 years ago. Over the last 18 years, I have been a full-time stay at home mother of 8 amazing children. I love to take care of my family, which is a full-time job in its self that never ends. In 2012, I began attending Bethel University. I have encountered countless amounts of issues writing academically throughout my college career thus far. Maybe, I lack the understanding and confidence that it takes to be a good writer. Hopefully that will change someday.

Writing has always played a huge role in my life. I’ve been reading writing for as long as I can remember as I have an immense love of reading. This love would grow into a love for writing as well; I still stumble upon journals and writings from my five-year-old self about the happenings in my kindergarten class. As time would go on I would discover academic writing, and how to convey my thoughts on what was the topic of student that particular year or semester in my schooling. Later, writing would become a constant for me, and a comfort; I was known to my friends as always having a journal, and a pen on my person. I learned to write down my feelings and my thoughts, song lyrics that were in my head, reflections for the day. I learned how
I believe I have achieved most of the course learning objectives as I pass this class with a c or higher. I undertook the writing process we learned in class and it has helped me become a better writer. Before I entered my freshman year of college I didn’t know how to write. But as I undertook the writing process I was taught in class I now know how to write. First when it came to writing my assignment papers for my class I grabbed a notebook and did prewriting . I brainstormed a list of ideas for my papers. I then had a plan on everything I was going to write about. I then sit down and write my first draft. I make sure my first paragraph is a strong
