Reflective Letter
"In many ways writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind" (Didion, 1976). WRI 102 was specifically about proving your point of view through the medium of writing. It was packed with critical writing and research skills that were developed throughout the semester. Moreover, this course helped me develop an understanding of the audience; I grew as a critical thinker and learnt the importance of warrants in an argumentative essay. Writing always serves a purpose. It's meant to be given to an audience. In university, this audience is usually a teacher, but out in the real world the audience might be anyone from boss to followers on a blog. Therefore, it is important to know to how to address the general audience through writing. I wrote mainly about design and architecture, which might not be easy to understand for people from other arenas. However, this course taught me to incorporate definitions and explanations that might be helpful to make my essay comprehensible to the general audience. It helped me evaluate an argumentative essay and develop my skills as a critical thinker. The objective of critique is to force the writer to take an objective look at what has been written, evaluate its suitability, tighten the work where needed, then let the words stand on their own. I evaluated the essay as a reader and hence it made me aware of what I should or should not include in my essay; what my readers think when they read my argument. For instance, when I read the article, Imam in America, it was filled with hasty generalizations and red herrings; this made me question the credibility of the author. I, thus made sure that in my future essay I never made the same mistake as the author of that essay
