Reflective Letter
"In many ways writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind" (Didion, 1976). WRI 102 was specifically about proving your point of view through the medium of writing. It was packed with critical writing and research skills that were developed throughout the semester. Moreover, this course helped me develop an understanding of the audience; I grew as a critical thinker and learnt the importance of warrants in an argumentative essay. Writing always serves a purpose. It's meant to be given to an audience. In university, this audience is usually a teacher, but out in the real world the audience might be anyone from boss to followers on a blog. Therefore, it is important to know to how to address the general audience through writing. I wrote mainly about design and architecture, which might not be easy to understand for people from other arenas. However, this course taught me to incorporate definitions and explanations that might be helpful to make my essay comprehensible to the general audience. For instance, in the Compact City essay, I included a background paragraph in order to explain the

It helped me evaluate an argumentative essay and develop my skills as a critical thinker. The objective of critique is to force the writer to take an objective look at what has been written, evaluate its suitability, tighten the work where needed, then let the words stand on their own. I evaluated the essay as a reader and hence it made me aware of what I should or should not include in my essay; what my readers think when they read my argument. For instance, when I read the article, Imam in America, it was filled with hasty generalizations and red herrings; this made me question the credibility of the author. I, thus made sure that in my future essay I never made the same mistake as the author of that essay
A freshman college level English Composition course aims to improve students' abilities with writing, critical thinking, mechanics and usage, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. By studying English 101 at Luzerne County Community College, I will work diligently to improve in all of these aspects. My main focus is to develop skills specifically to create clear and concise thesis statements, strong and persuasive essays with cajolement, and to develop different perspectives on narratives and other essays. These writing skills may also improve my critical thinking and reading skills.
Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it, and it has become a huge part of my life.
With writing my review essay of A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s album The Bigger Artist. The essay took some time to write because of the research I needed to gather. In this essay I used more citations and quotes. I made mistakes the mechanics in writing the quotes. This was the first essay in which we used sources, so it was challenging to create my own ideas but I was able to do it. Writing this essay improved my knowledge of mechanics in citations and quotations.
Learning the many different ways to critique, gave me an advantage when writing my papers and
To begin, essay writing and critical thinking, as taught in this course, are useful skills that will continue to be used throughout my lifetime. Coming into this class, I wasn't sure what to expect. Of course,I expected to be writing a lot but was unsure of the type of writing and the style. I wanted to explore how to express myself in my writing because it had been a long time since I'd written a creative essay. During this semester, the realization of my past was that I have often skimmed through parts of the writing process to get the job done. Not being an avid reader often hindered my writing abilities. This class most definitely made me realize that the entire writing process is important and having peer reviews also helped significantly and certainly made a difference in the result of my work. Taking the time to read, brainstorm my thoughts, write an outline, rough draft after rough draft, reading constructive criticism of others helped in the revisions of my papers’ reaching the best possible outcome. When selecting English 102, I knew I would be challenged, but to what extent I was unsure. If like past English courses that were taken learning to write essays would be the goal. Once realizing that my work would be shared with others, providing informed information
I have attended WRA 110 almost four months and I appreciate that I have a deeper and further impression about American college writing. Since I am an international student, honestly, I am not good at writing at all, I have to spend more time on fixing some grammar problems in writing, especially, analyzing article. Sometimes I even very struggle with how to write it clear for readers, but after I accepted advice from professors and peer review, I have improved my writing skills and learnt a lot from the class.
The audience of the University is all academia. The academy includes the professors as well as the college students. The writer has to write in such a vocabulary and flow of words so the student or the instructor understands the writer’s viewpoint. The writer writes in the situation knowing they are going to be graded for their writing and how well they understand the topic. For example, in my timed essay my audience was the Department of English and I used a certain vocabulary for them to understand the reason I had on both the
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I
When I enrolled in Writing 106, I never expected this course to influence my writing as much as it did. I acquired an immense knowledge about research writing. I learned how to analyze all my work before and after I completed it, gained an understanding of rhetorical situation and how to reflect on my own and my peer’s pieces in a constructive way. The endless cycle of writing and revision opened my eyes to the endless potential for every writing piece. My annotated bibliography and final research paper verify that I have fulfilled the curriculum tasks and have a full understanding of research writing.
During the group discussions it helped me earn feedback from my different peers in the class and view the different thoughts and ideas that my fellow classmates had. When writing an essay, having different classmates review my work and give feedback helped me learn more about myself and other people. It helped me learn that people will always have a different point of view when it comes to writing, and I also learned that peer reviews are a precise and beneficial way of showing different ideas and showing mistakes that I made in my essay. This also contributed to my overall improvements of
Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement. English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing, teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there’s always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great writer.
I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of “refreshing” to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write an intelligent paper will benefit you not just through school but also through life. Writing skills are a reflection of intelligence and I want to perfect my writing the best that I can. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. This fall semester in ESL 91has been pretty interesting, and so far successful. The main object of this semester was to improve our essay writing. We were taught various lab techniques that helped us to improve our English writing skills, such as using appropriate verb tense and how to write a research paper with a works cited. Through my work on the research paper I have learned how to write in an academic style, how to find appropriate sources from an academic database, and how to cite my sources. Most of all, I can say that my reading skills have improved because the research for our papers required me to do a lot of critical reading.
