Different theories and ways of practising exist for counsellors, with reflective practice becoming more popular amongst practitioners. Dallos, & Stedmon (2009) state that for professionals working directly with people, such as counsellors, reflective practice has quickly developed into a fundamental component of training, and the best practice for creating successful outcomes. This essay will focus on how reflective practice is critical for professional life, and how the use of reflection and theory can be used by counselling practitioners to inform their practice. Geldard, Geldard, & Yin Foo (2017) recognise that reflective practice can also help the counsellor prevent exhaustion or ‘burnout’ in the work place. From the use of some simple questions about how they are feeling, and by reflecting on their practice, counsellors can stop exhaustion before it occurs. Wheatley (2002, cited in Bassot, 2016) proposes that “without reflection, we go blindly on our own way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful” (p.1). In other words, reflection can help the counsellor learn from their mistakes, and the consequences of these mistakes, in order to move forward and achieve more positive and successful outcomes for their clients. Additionally, reasoning for the recent increase in popularity could be that reflection in practice helps counsellors to identify and deconstruct the clients thoughts and assumptions rather than just focusing on the narrative of their story (Hickson, 2011). It is now becoming apparent why reflective practice is becoming more popular amongst the counselling profession and is a critical component to professional life. Dallos, & Stedmon (2009) argue that in order for reflection in practice to be achieved, the counsellor must see reflection as a consecutive process of assessing and reassessing relevant events or incidents, and evaluating the outcomes to learn from past experiences.
