Regardless if society was made equal or not do cultural tensions still exist in America today? Lillian-Yvonne Bertram, a poet, and recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Poetry Fellowship wrote the poem Skittles for Trayvon: A Diminishing Suite in Verse in 2017. The poem basically explains the Trayvon Martin incident in the representation of elements and nature. Trayvon Martin represents the singing boy who went to the supermarket to get teas and candies, and George Zimmerman, who represents the troubles man who tried to harass Trayvon considering he is black. This poem ended in the tragedy of Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman all because of the cultural tensions held between Caucasian and…show more content…
During the period of the Trayvon Martin case after he was murdered George Zimmerman was found not guilty. In lines 41-46 it states as part of the incident, “Troubled Man stepped on the singing Boy’s heels who yelled in surprise. His yell so scared Troubled Man who sunk his hands around the throat of Singing Boy and squeezed out the song with all his might.” These lines show that the George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin because of his presence and his appearance. Now a rational society would think that George Zimmerman would be found guilty considering it was manslaughter, but unfortunately the judicial system provides two different standards in America: one for Caucasians and the other for blacks. In lines 34-38 it presumably states, “With Every step of rain steamed up from Singing Boy’s path and showered down upon him. Singing Boy pulled his cloak around him for a shelter. Troubled Man took him for a terrible ghost.” These lines emphasize how George Zimmerman has already seen him as a troublemaker because of his hood and what he possessed in his hand, which was a bag of Skittles and Arizona Ice Tea. However, if the roles were backwards, being that Trayvon Martin had tried to attack George Zimmerman he would have been charged with manslaughter and received a massive sentence because he was black and murdered a Caucasian man.
