Case Study:

Reggie was 100% responsible for his grade so I put him number 1 on the list. Aside from issues prioritizing ad time management, he specifically got an F for plagiarism. Failing the class was a values issue rather than study problems. The University of the People Student Handbook (University Of the People, 2016) states: “Even indirect quotations, paraphrasing, etc., can be considered plagiarism unless sources are properly cited. Plagiarism will not be tolerated at any time; students are required to learn and be personally responsible for educating themselves about plagiarism” (emphasis mine)

It seems like she gave a vague warning and dropped the issue. If she suspected a breach of academic integrity, she really should have told Arnie to scrap the paper or she would have to tell the professor that she suspected plagiarism.

Finally, Prof. Lovelit would be fourth on the list. The Professor has no responsibility for enforcing a zero tolerance rule by failing Arnie.

My thoughts on Plagiarism and strategies to avoid.

I think our Academic Integrity policy and Code of Integrity are clear and simple. Do not use other people’s work or use their ideas without due credit. And hold yourself and others to that standard.

To avoid breaching the code of conduct even if the thought is my own but closely influenced by someone else, when in doubt, I cite. I also review before submittal for any citations I intended to put in but may have missed. As an adult learner I’ve read/watched/heard things along the way and it’s possible I could be pulling something from memory and think its original.
