The Giver Lois Lowry had her book The Giver published in the year 1993 by Houghton Mifflin Company. She is an American writer that has written more than thirty children’s books and is known for writing about controversial subjects within her book. As Lowry stated, “But a book like The Giver is a much more complicated book, and therefore it comes from much more complicated place- and many of them are probably things that I don’t even recognize myself anymore, if I ever did.” (Lowry 5). Meaning that the message and situation behind the story can be interpreted in many different ways because of the many unique relations and issues in the real world. Rules are created to ensure a comfortable and regulated living for each citizen, the community is organized with many of the responsibilities appointed to the citizens and by laws implemented at a young age. In the novel, Jonas is twelve therefore meaning he will be assigned to a role in his community. When the ceremony takes place, Jonas was selected to become the Receiver of memories. Jonas begins his training as the Receiver of memories with the Giver and he experiences memories of love, cold, and pain from the past. As he trains for his job, he begins to see the lies and confinement that the government practiced on their citizens. From there he made the decision to abandon his role, family, and beliefs of a perfect community. Many things can be learned from this book, for example, I learned that thoughts about an issue can be changed into something different and that not everything is what it appears to be. On page 151, I read that Jonas is exposed to the lies and secrets of their government and community. Lois Lowry’s meaning and main points about The Giver is something that I agree with, change is inevitable and there can be a deeper meaning behind an action or issue.
