Introduction In 1919, for the first time the world were introduced to the idea of management by Henri Fayol when the book Administration Industrielle et Générale – Prévoyance, Organisation, Commandement, Coordination, Contrôle was published. This is one of the earliest books explicitly discuss about management. Henri Fayol (1841-1925) was a very successful businessman with more than 30 years experiences as a managing director. In his book, Fayol defines management as comprising five functions: planning, organising, co-ordinating, commanding and controlling. While he has his modern critics, his approach to management continues to have appeal (Witzel, 2003). Below is a subjective allocation of Mintzberg’s roles into five classical functions using my own understanding and adaptation from the work of Lamond (2004) and Fells (2000). (a) Planning: “assess the future and make provision for it”. Fayol also note that a good plan is a plan that can be characterised by ‘unity, continuity, flexibility and precision’ (Fayol, 1949). In order to assess the future, manager needs an extensive source of information. Therefore he needs to use his network to collect and analyse information. This requires a system of sharing information between department and pass onto individuals in each department. When a manager maintains good relationship with other departments, he is performing his liaison role. He then exchanges information with other managers (spokesman role). Finally, he passes on the information to subordinates as disseminator role. Scondly, ‘department schedules are continually adjusted to circumstances’ (Fells, 2000). After exchanging information, adjustment needs to be made if necessary. Manager now acts as a ‘disturbance handler’ to make any change in plan and allocation of resources to resolve the issue.
