Businesses are tasked with the objective of producing money. Even in class, there is a consensual understanding that “The meaning of life is money;” however, I would disagree with the majority and say that the meaning of life is relationships. Relationships are universal; every living creature in the world is connected through some function they do in life. In business, the most important roles are those that involve relationships, most specifically the role of the leader and the manager. There is a one key distinct difference between leaders and managers as defined by Randy Komisar in The Monk and the Riddle: “Management is a methodical process…Leaders must suspend their disbelief and move ahead even with very incomplete information.” To further elaborate on this idea, I will discuss the leadership skills Randy gained through his relationship with Bill Campbell, the impact the relationship had on Randy’s professional career, and how Lenny can apply the same skills to save his Funerals.com business.
During Randy’s time as co-founder of Claris, a software technology branch of Apple, he experienced his greatest business lesson through Bill Campbell. Bill had an aura about him that resonated from his deep appreciation for people. As the leader for Claris, Bill instilled a mentality that the greatest asset for a company are the people whether it be consumers or employees. All business operations had to be addressed with “How will this affect the people?” To Randy, this seemed
Studies on the subjects of leadership and management have the underlying difference between a leader and a manager as “managers maintain things and leaders change things.” Gill (2006:26) explains their difference as “Managers plan, allocate resources, administer and control whereas leaders innovate, communicate and motivate”
Leadership in an organization often plays a critical role, and is frequently, though not always, one of the major drivers of the success or failure of a company. (Bass, 1990) Effective leadership helps a company through times of peril and brings a future of brightness. It makes a corporation successful. However, what is leadership? According to Kouzes and Posner, it is the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations. (1995, p.30) Leaders set a clear direction for us; they help us realize what is ahead; they support us to achieve and win; they encourage and inspire us when we feel depressed. Without leadership, an organization will degenerate into chaos and unstructured because people view things in different ways.
Recommendations for managers who demand to be leaders are to appearance compassion. To be a leader a person needs to see the world as an opportunity to change. They need to accept the employees ' dilemmas. Respect the assessment of the advisers and accomplish decisions that will be acceptable not only for them but the
Over the course of this semester, I have learned about the theoretical foundation of leadership and management. From various leadership styles to numerous learning tools have all aided in shaping me to become an effective leader not only in the health care profession, but everyday life as well. Through utilizing these tools, I have managed to put them into actions through working individually and in teams which has helped me to learn more about myself and the type of leader I am. Throughout this action plan I will reflect on my definition of leadership, what I’ve learned about myself in the capacity to demonstrate leadership, my leadership strengths and weaknesses and three action steps that will help me to develop my leadership in the future.
“Understanding leadership in early childhood has been plagued by its confusion with the concept of management” (Rodd, 2013, p. 19). The quotation highlights the overlapping of different roles of leadership and management. It is true in respect that people misunderstand the true nature, roles and responsibilities of both the roles because the educational leaders play the role of manager in early childhood setting and the managers perform the duties of educational leader. The following essay will discuss the role of the leaders, which is different from the managers in early childhood settings. There will be discussion on the different skills and dispositions required to perform the role of a leader and a manager. There are different models and theories, which influence the way of working of the leaders and managers. First, the essay will explain the Collin’s level five leadership model; and Katz’s four development stages model followed by the Formal, Collegial and Cultural models of educational management in early childhood setting. Finally, the essay will compare and contrast the current theories of leadership; the charismatic theory, the transactional theory and the transformational theory of leadership. The different theories’ implication to the early educational settings will also be discussed through the essay.
Communities are a crucial element to society. This being said, as leaders it is equally critical to evaluate and understand communities. Chapter seven of Komives’s Exploring Leadership assesses the dynamics of communities. Under the relational leadership model, groups are viewed as communities. These groups may not be as simple as they may appear. The main points Komives discusses is the element, practice, and development of communities.
As we know that, leadership is nothing. But the influencing flowers. Leadership includes three fundamental clusters of skills creating vision, garnering commitment to that vision, an managing progress toward the realization of that vision. powerful and effective leaders plays very vital role to reach the maximum production for any organization.
The article titled Relational Leadership written by James Freeman takes a look at the impact of Child and Youth Workers in the lives of youth, specifically the work of Brian Gannon. Brian Gannon is an experienced Youth Worker who took on a leadership role at St. Johns Hostel in Cape Town, South Africa in 1967, at the age of twenty-seven. St. Johns consisted of sixty four boys, with many of them left alone in the aftermath of World War I along with the influenza epidemic. Outside of the care provided for the boys, the program offered them a life parallel to anyone living in the city. Activities such as afternoon sports, free time and contact with friends and family outside of the institution were provided and endorsed by the institution for the boys. Gannon’s approach to working with youth focused on the following things highlighted in the article: “creating smaller living groups for the boys, less regimented routines, more experiences of childhood and adolescence in everyday life, and a focus on developing meaningful relationships with one another” (Freeman, 2015, p. 37). In other words, Gannon’s main goal was to lead and guide the youth so that they are given an equal chance at succeeding in life. Gannon is also a co-founder of CYC-Net where he has published a collection of approximately two-hundred child and youth care practice hints, each hint containing a background theory and a how-to element. The article then analyzes an excerpt from the works of Gannon, complimenting
In today’s business world employees, industries, and consumers look toward company leaders like Steve Jobs (Former Apple CEO), Anne Mulcahy (Former Xerox CEO), Jeff Bezos (Amazon CEO), Elon Musk (Former PayPal CEO), and Eric Schmidt (Goggle CEO) to understand the dynamic roles of leadership and management. These two allusive terms have inspired a great deal of conversation, articles, and books full of material about their true meanings. These two words have also inspired the academic world to create core and major courses in an effort to help future managers and leaders plan, organize, and lead. But what does Leadership or Management really mean and are the terms related?
Leadership, management, and followership are three concepts which are all interrelated. Nurses do each of these in the workplace regardless of his/her position on the chain of command (Yoder-Wise, 2014, p.5).
The four approaches in understanding leadership have their own advantages in explaining leadership. However, I would say that the relational approach is the most comprehensive way in explaining and understanding leadership. According to Hackman and Johnson (2013), “leadership is “human (symbolic) communication that modifies the attitudes and behaviors of others in order to meet shared group goals” (p. 11). From the definition, we could see that leadership emphasizes on communication, task, and relationship among leaders and followers, and those aspects are well explained in the relational approach which has focus on leader-member relationships, while other approaches have focus on personal characteristics (for traits and contingency approach)
GDD derived its leadership concept through the relational leadership theory on account of their view of leadership as a relational and ethical process of people attempting to carry out positive change within an organization (Exploring Leadership, n.d.). GDD focuses on the idea that leadership effectiveness is an ability of the leaders to create a substantive relationship within the company (Exploring Leadership, n.d.); additionally, this idea encompasses the following components: inclusiveness, empowering, purposeful, ethical, and process oriented. GDD developed an organizational structure and culture to encourage and foster a business environment that reflects this leadership theory.
As Regional Director for Happy Face Frozen Foods (HFFF), I hold a great responsibility to meet sales projection levels at each of my sales districts. Every day the things around us begin to change without us taking much observation of what is truly going on, weather it be big or small. The business world is one that is constantly changing and the people associated in this world have to adapt to those changes. Peter Drucker, the “creator” of management, knew change happens everywhere especially in the business world, so the changes were no surprise to him. In the novel, The Definitive Drucker by Elizabeth Haas Edersheim, Drucker’s ideas and thoughts on leadership, collaboration and motivation by fear of failure really impressed me and got my brain thinking truly like a businessman. Leadership is crucial in every aspect of any business and leadership is made up of the ability to make decisions along with the personality of a person. Collaboration plays a large role in well-run organization; within collaboration the correct skills need to be attached to the right person and a high level of communication through out the organization. Motivation by fear of failure has a large impact of employees in a business because no one wants to fail and that helps motivate some people in a business. These three areas of business feed off one another and together they help improve the business world. Looking at these topics it has helped me learn more about the business world and how it works from the inside out. After reviewing my biggest take-aways from Drucker, it made me think about how I learn and work but also how I can improve
