Relationships Between Men and Women in Thoms Hardy's Short Stories
Thomas Hardy was born on June the 2nd, 1848, at Higher Brockhampton in Dorset, a little hamlet, a few miles from Dorchester. He soon moved to London to study architecture, writing poems and short stories in his spare time, eventually moving on to do full-time writing, abandoning architecture.
Most of his stories are set in the imagined county of Wessex, which encompasses the counties, Dorset, Devon, and Cornwall. His novels and short stories all involved several issues; Victorian relationships and the dynamics of actual relationships between people and Wessex itself. In response Tony just seems to take the compliment (it goes to his head) and charmingly says: '…I never knowed you was so pretty before!' The exclamation mark at the end emphasises the blunt and charming effect of what has just been said, it also leaves us as readers in a strange place as we cannot tell whether he is joking or being serious. However when she responds 'prettier than she [referring to Milly]' he has no response. So now the reader knows even more about the character of Tony; he wasn't being serious before. It also shows us how shallow and desperate Unity is, as well as showing us Tony Kytes' need for a beautiful woman, forgetting the ideas of love. The final part of this relationship, apparent in all his relationships is his manipulation and power over her; this is brilliantly shown in the part of the story where he sees his fiancé in the road ahead:
'Unity…will ye lie down in the back part of the wagon and let me cover you over with the tarpaulin…Do! -And I'll think over what we've said; and perhaps I shall put a loving question to you after all, instead of to Milly'.
This speech brings us to a number of conclusions about this relationship. We realise that Tony has a lot of power

Some people believe that once they marry they are giving up their freedom. In some cases, this is true, especially in the late 19th century. Woman during this period were marrying as young as 15 years old and were marrying men well into their 30s. This caused a lack of communication and love between a married couple and usually resulted in the man having control over the woman. The idea of men having control over women in marriage can be seen in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour.” In this short story, Louise Mallard learns of her husband’s death due to a fatal train accident. In Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, he introduces a character known as the Wife of Bath. It is her turn to tell the stories, and her tale begins discussing her past marriages in the prologue. Married five times, the Wife of Bath tells us about her own marital issues, and the way she was able to manipulate the gender roles to her own advantage. As interesting of a character as she is, I find Chaucer created the Wife of Bath to deliberately introduce the issues gender roles play in our society. I believe that the role the of the Wife of Bath in the tale was purposely written by Chaucer to twist the traditional gender roles of the time, satirizing how gender plays in society.

It would have been expected of a young woman to find a ‘suitable’ partner for marriage before they were thirty, as after this they could be seen as an embarrassment to their family. Edgar Allen Poe's narrators are unreliable such as in the stories, ¨A Tell-Tale Heart¨ and ¨The Black Cat¨ because the narrators are alcoholics and have mental disabilities. A unreliable narrator is someone who can not be trusted to tell a story in the correct way because there is something wrong with them that makes them incapable of telling a story. For example, in the stories listed above the narrators are either always intoxicated or they have mental disabilities which make them illegible to explain a story. They can alter or change the story to fit their perspective and they could forget a part or even be making it up. Since they are unreliable you can not trust what they say. In all of Poe's work the narrators are unreliable and there are many ways to prove it.

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice examines and critiques a society built upon gender roles. Austen does this by examining the obstacles women experienced in the Regency Period. Austen expresses how women were controlled, and objectified by men through their need to get married to a man. Additionally, the novel ridicules how women who could not afford to live without men were shadowed by their partner. This commentary is seen through the portrayal of the Bennet sisters. The females of the family are forced to marry because they do not inherit any wealth. The family is forced to comply with the same boundaries Austen was governed by. Therefore, Austen focuses on how the Bennet sisters overcome a society that suppresses them. This allows the reader to comprehend the strength, perseverance, determination, and assertiveness of the women in this time. Overall, Jane Austen addresses gender issues throughout the story. This is seen in the progressive image of Elizabeth, as she combats the inequality women experience. Although it was not common for women to criticize the patriarchy, the overall depiction of females is progressive. Elizabeth represents Austen’s feminist views, and the depiction of women in the novel is seen through her feminist image as she deals with Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy.
Although women in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries faced oppression and unequal treatment, some people strove to change common perspectives on the feminine sex. John Stuart Mill, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Virginia Woolf were able to reach out to the world, through their literature, and help change the views that society held towards women and their roles within its structure. During the Victorian era, women were bound to domestic roles and were very seldom allowed to seek other positions. The trails and tribulations of life can cause a person to go down a road they could have never imagined. Some people are able to rise above the issues that come their way and while others become consumed by their problems. In a male dominated society, the issues of women are often pushed to the side and they are left to deal with them alone. Therefore, some women become abused by their thoughts and problems due to the fact that they do not have the ability to tackle them alone. It becomes an internal and external battle for the scorned woman to please herself, husband (or father) and the society at the same time. The portrayal of men and women has varied in different stories throughout history. Many portray women as beautiful, deceptive, manipulative, and smart, while men are portrayed as being strong, masculine, and easily tricked. In many of the works covered in the course “Major British Writers to 1800,” men are advised to refrain from acting lustful, believed that it would harm their overall ability to succeed in whatever the characters aimed to do. An example of this is seen in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” when Gawain is deceived by Lady Bertilak in an effort to prove that Sir Gawain is imperfect. The depictions of men and women are very similar in Fantomina by Eliza Haywood, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Phyllis and Aristotle. .
In Hemingway’s short story, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, we begin with the married couple, Franics and Margaret Macomber, on a safari in Africa with a man named Robert Wilson. Francis is shown to be a coward when he shoots his first lion twice, but is too afraid to finish it off even though it may be suffering. E.M. Forster’s novel Howards End deals heavily with relationships and gender roles. It is implied that the characters spends a majority of the story trying to find common ground in an uneven society. The issues of that period’s society, such as class, gender, race, etc., by examining the relationships between the characters. Particularly, the majority women in the novel- Ruth Wilcox, Margaret Schlegel, and Jacky Bast can be analyzed in terms of their relationship with one central male character.
