For my religious field trip I went to a Jewish Synagogue in center city with my roommate, and I also watched a full video of a young girl’s bat Mitzvah to get a better understanding and for this report I am going to talk about the overall experience, what it meant to me going to a different religion’s service, what I saw and noticed to be different or unique, and then I will compare it a little to my own religion. So to start this I think it would be appropriate to first ask the question what is religion? The definition would tell you that it “is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, ethics, and social organization that relate humanity to an order of existence. About 84% of the world 's population is affiliated with one of the five largest religions, namely Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or forms of folk religion” (Wiki). However, that really doesn’t explain religion as a thing rather it explains it as a word. Religion as a thing (as I would like to refer to it as) is a faith or belief system that an individual has to obtain the wisdom and powers one would not be able to do without a god like figure. Now that sounds like I’m saying religion is the ability to ask for super hero like powers and get it. But what I’m trying to say is religion is having someone that you can pray too and look up to, to help you with things that are challenging and different. We ask god to help us when we take a hard test, we ask god to help heal and protect people
What is the true definition of the word religion? Well, religion is a set of beliefs and practices that recognize the existence of a god or many gods. We need religion in our lives because it gives us a sense of belonging to our common faith and helps us set morals in our lives. The importance of faith in our lives has created a bigger understanding to us and has showed us how we can have a closer link to it.
The definition of religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal god or gods. But, is that what it means to everyone? To some people it’s there world. That’s what life means to them and they would make any decisions good or bad for their beliefs. Who is it they worship, what they believe in, and even how everything exists. There are many different religions that you can choose to believe in. The religions all have many differences but continue to also have many similarities.
What does religion mean? Well according to the dictionary it means, the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. In a religion a group of people, praise or worship their (creator) that could be from an all powerful man or a machine, depends on the religion and what it believes in. Bábism, Bahá'í, Faith, Christianity, Gnosticism, and Islam are just a few of the 4,200 that there are in the world. One most people are familiar with in America is christianity, they are considered Christians and believe in one god and that
Religion to me is a set of rules and beliefs of one individual to be followed by an abundance of people. As William A. Graham states in Why Study Religion In the 21st Century “Religion is the key element in every culture and in every phase of history.” All over the world, religion is a huge thing for people. Religion has brought people closer than ever before, An example is how close America became during 9/11. That day America was united as a whole. Religion has also had its down right degrading moments. The holocaust, is one of the most disturbing and screwed up things to ever happen to a group of people because of who they believe in.
I believe we should define religion as Harriett Martineau, (2017), she states “Religion is the belief in an ever-living God, that is, in a divine mind and will ruling the universe and holding moral relationships with mankind”. Belief in an ever-living God comforts the soul and gives a sense of being protected. God lives he is alive and we can come to him with our troubles, weaknesses and failures, and He will help us overcome. He is of divine mind, meaning he is deity all knowing, all seeing, omnipotent in power and capable of all things. Gods will for us is to not perish but to have eternal life; he seeks to have a relationship with all mankind and made that possible through reconciliation on the cross.
Personally, I have always thought religion is the shared beliefs and practices of human beings. Religion is something that you can put your faith towards and believe in your life. Religion is the belief that that there is something larger than oneself and that you have to answer to for your good and bad deeds in life. There are so many different types of religions and cultures around the world. Religion is often used to label or identify a group of people. This label gives you some idea of people’s beliefs and morals. It defines our lifestyles, such as the way we act or dress, etc. Some people think their religious affiliation automatically predetermines the type of person that they are destined to grow up to be.
First, what is religion? One of many definitions of religion is, “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or “gods”.This is also a definition that accepted, but why so much debate.Well by examining the definition, the word “personal”.Would that mean that religion is just a personal tool and how would God be separated from something personal if the faith implies a personal relationship? Most people usually look at the google search definition that pops up the biggest but there seems to be multiple definitions.Another interesting definition of religion that sparks debate, is the definition stating that is the pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance. So does this mean religion is just something started because someone felt that it was needed? Is there other intentions behind religion? Some say for control, separation, or money. When thinking about this it's important to have knowledge of the word itself.Theories state that
According to Merriam and Webster dictionary (2016), religion is a belief in a god or in a group of gods within an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies and rules. It is an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group. Although existence of gods or the many gods has not yet been proven, religion poses a power so strong it channels belief for everyone that has faith in their chosen religion (Psychology Today, 2016). Faith factors into our daily lives, good or evil, pleasure or pain, and religion helps us make sense of our world giving us motivation that binds us together (Psychology Today, 2016).
Individuality can not be defined in one definition there are numerous things that make up this word.Being individual is what makes you stand out from the rest of society .You're born with the idea of being your own person. You may rely on your parents at first but as you get older you develop a form of self-reliance. Beliefs, empathy, emotions, backgrounds, and many more things.
Religion is often used as a general term and it is also a term that is misunderstood. Like Pascal Boyer mentioned in his work one should not say that religion is only based on God as a superior being but it is about an array of agents such as "ghouls, ghosts, spirits, ancestors, gods, etc., in direct interaction with people." (Boyer 1). Religion is also something that is not all about morality and salvation, this is only common in a few doctrines and unrecognized in other religious practices. He also discussed the
Religion is thought to be one of the most influential aspects of human life. According to Webster Dictionary, religion can be defined as a set of beliefs and practices agreed upon by a number of people created by a superhuman known as God. Creating and “establishing a religious identity is an elusive and multifaceted process, both for those who claim these identities and for those who attempt to categorize adherents according to their religious affiliation” (Tsomo 78). Religion is a key component in personally identifying an individual. It can be birth given, meaning one is born into a certain family that practices a certain religion or the individual can choose the religion he
Religion is system of beliefs driven by the feeling that some questions can only be answered by faith; for instances, questions such as where did we come from? and What happens to us after we die? These and other external mysteries helps define religion as beliefs in supernatural forces, community, myth, moral code, ritual, and the belief in the afterlife. The belief in supernatural beings, especially god is based on an intuition that there is something greater than ourselves or a higher power that we must answer to. Community is communal in nature and a social group bound together by the above. Myth is the sense of mystery for the unknown and adoration when we come in presence of sacred places, objects, and rituals. More importantly,
According to Penguin Dictionary of Religions (1997), religion is defined as a general term that used to appoint all concepts relating the belief in god(s) and goddess(es) as well as other spiritual beings or transcendental ultimate concerns. According to American Heritage Dictionary, religion is defined as belief in and reverence for a supernatural power recognized as the creator and governor of the universe, a particular integrated system of this expression and also the spiritual or emotional attitude of one who recognizes the existence of a superhuman power or powers. J. Miltion Yinger once said, "Religion is a system of beliefs and practices by means of which a group of people struggle with the ultimate problem of human life."
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of religion is as follows: “the belief in a god or in a group of gods, an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods, or an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group” (Merriam-Webster.) My personal definition of religion is that it is a set of beliefs and practices that generally pertain the worship of one or more than one spiritual beings or representations of a spiritual power. Religion can be personal belief or an organization or group of people who have similar beliefs and values. There are many different types of religions in the world and have been since the
Religion in the beginning started as a basis for an understanding of why things came to be, why the world was created and a reason why humanity was created ( the way things are and why they are) since science isn't as evolved as it is now, they had created reasonings or an understanding of why things are the way they are and what it means. But in contemporary society, religion is used as an escape for reality, making people feel good about themselves and used as a form of understanding. Many governments and different civilisations use it as a basis for their laws (why gays can't marry), although within contemporary society this use of religion affecting the mindset of the population has been heavily criticized. Religion throughout the world creates a clear distinction between different cultures as they believe in different morals and ethics. With these distinguishable characteristics many religions suffer as persons from different cultural backgrounds and religion criticize their conflicting views with another.
