Religion in the workplace may always be a controversial topic to discuss. Many people have their own views and opinions regarding different religions. Christians cannot and should not force their personal views on co-workers, or anyone for that matter, but they can surely display Christ in the workplace. Healthcare professionals can represent Him in a variety of ways. These professionals can be a representation of Christ through sharing His word verbally, by way of non-verbal communication, or simply by the manner in which they conduct themselves. Representing Christ is not a difficult task for someone who is on fire for the Lord, and strong in their faith. Even still, it is important that the healthcare professionals embody Christ in a way
The hospital can be an isolating place for some people and this does not encourage healing. The Christian faith can be lived out in the medical field by having a genuine desire to connect with those around you. The comfort of having someone who cares about you and always connects with you is a stress relief and helps with the healing process. Offering to pray with or listen to the patient's worries builds this relationship. Knowing someone is fully invested and wants the best for them will make communication much easier in the hospital because there is a sense of

Working in the healthcare field could be difficult at times, especially dealing with topics about religion in the workplace. The minorities are perceived to have a lower quality in healthcare due to poor rating, and cultural adaptation to meet. There are about 7 million Muslims, although ethnically and racially diverse, religiously healthcare value that
As a Catholic nurse living in California, the author encounters patients with different religion, but the author promptly sets aside her own beliefs, placing the patient as number one priority. The
Chapman further defines a Healing Hospital and Radical Loving Care environment to possess the following: all employees will treat patients with loving care, every leader will treat staff with respect and love, all hires must exemplify a Servants Heart, employees’ reviews will be based on outcomes and people who cannot uphold the mission of the hospital will be terminated. The expectations laid out before leaders and frontline employees were simple yet powerful. If compassion and love is not exchanged between co-workers, than how can loving care reach the patient. A Servants Heart is an essential characteristic of all health care workers, they must have a passion to serve and show empathy to those in need. The Baptist Healing Trust’s, Compassionate Care Initiative, further states, “Because we believe in the humanity and dignity of each human being as created by God, we deem that care must be compassionate in order to be truly healing” ( Baptist Healing Trust ). A Healing Hospital embraces the religious teachings of Jesus and encourages employees to demonstrate compassionate and unconditional love as Jesus did when caring for their patients. Chapman’s echoes the message sent by Jesus, do unto others as you would want others to do unto you. For this writer, the way in which the patients’ gown is described as
Os Hillman, in his article 4 Types of Christians, describes what he believes are the four types of Christians that are typically found in the workplace. One, the Christian that is just trying to survive the workplace, and typically will segment their work lives and their spiritual lives. Hillman states that this type of Christian has not seen the power of God’s presence in their work lives, and has little direction and purpose. The second type of Christian is the one that is living by Christian principles. This person is most likely increasingly changing negative patterns in their life, however, they are not necessarily directing their influence outward to others. Thirdly, there is the Christian that is living by the power of the Holy Spirit. These Christians are disciplined in the study of His Word, dedicated to prayer, and seeks to be obedient to the Holy Spirit and Biblical teachings. Lastly, the fourth type of Christian is one that is transforming their workplace for Christ. Embracing the power of the Holy Spirit, and seeking the manifestation of God’s kingdom here on earth. Hillman states that when the kingdom of God is demonstrated on earth, then the workplace and broader society will be transformed (Hillman,
The United States is one of the most culturally and religiously diverse countries in the world. The founding fathers of the United States wanted to ensure that its people would have the ability to practice their religion with no threat of persecution. In order to accomplish the goal of religious freedom and continue to ensure that all people of any religion would be free to practice their religion, the United States passed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits an employer from discriminating based on the religious views of its employees. As the citizens of the United States spend a large amount of time in their places of employment, religious practices that these employees feel are necessary for the true observance of their religion must be accommodated by the employers. This law contends that in cases where the accommodation of religious practices of its employees does not create undue hardships, an employer must make reasonable accommodations for employees to practices the beliefs of their religion. As the demographics of the United States continues to change with more religiously diverse people immigrating to the country, employers are coming under more pressure to ensure they are taking all possible precautions to accommodate the religious practices of its employees. These precautions are important as the once an employee has established a bona fide complaint of religious discrimination, the burden of proof then falls on the employer to prove they
Religion can influence how a law enforcement officer conducts him or herself. However, faith can influence their actions, but when dealing with controversial situations, an officer, regardless of personal opinion, should conduct themselves in a manner which is respectful and honorable to their department and all parties involved.
As Christians, we are taught to not judge others because it is not our place, so as nurses we would not judge our patients and their personal decisions. I believe Christianity makes us more understanding of people and the situations they are going through. Being understanding can help us to respect our patient’s religious/nonreligious views. An important effect this faith-based program could have on our future careers as nurses is our level of holistic care. At MVNU, we are taught to love all of God’s creations. We are supposed to think of all humans as our brothers and sisters, this could affect how much we care for our patients emotionally. Christian nurses may be better morally guided when providing care. We may be able to connect with some of our patients on a deeper level because of our spirituality. This faith-based program will help us work towards doing everything in Christ’s
During the last week I have had the pleasure of interviewing several individuals about their beliefs and how those beliefs affect how they would anticipate their own needs in a healthcare setting. I found that I also learned a lot about each individual’s faith, how their faiths affected their daily lives and their worldviews. I conducted four interviews in the last week and I believe that I have captured a diverse cross section of view on faith and reality from these individuals.
In the healthcare profession, there are multiple cultural/religious differences in the world. In the United States, we have multiple religions from countries around the world, In the states a main religion is Christianity while around the world a large and growing religions are Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism.
Today there are over 900 religious employee resource groups, according to the International Coalition of Workplace Ministries (Cañas & Sondak, 2010). These affinity groups can help encourage religious understanding by offering panel discussions that educate employees on their beliefs. By allowing open discussion, answering religious questions and creating an open, welcoming religious environment in the workplace employees can better relate to one another through shared religious principles (Cañas & Sondak, 2010). When looking at the business case for diversity, not asking employees to hide their faith at work allows for greater productivity, and time and energy focused on business results (Cañas
Cultural differences in the workplace can sometimes become a challenge in the work environment. In order to facilitate these differences, there must be some form of cultural awareness. Cultural awareness can help employees face the challenge of responding to individuals with different religions in the workplace, expose religious practices, and eliminate stereotyping in the workplace. Awareness of religions, and the beliefs associated with different religions, can be accomplished in many ways, such as training courses, workshops or company handouts (Thomas Kochan, 2003, p. 4). Companies must embrace multiculturalism and diversity.
