One of the greatest controversies occurring today holds prominently in religion. These issues lies mainly with tradition, politics, gender, multiculturalism, violence, and sex. Religion is continuously evolving and so is society. With all this change controversy is inevitable. Problems with religion surround us: in the workplace, at school, in society, and politics. Religion is a very broad topic and according to Wikipedia, there are an estimated 4,200 religions in the world. It would be nearly impossible to discuss all of these religions and the issues that interfere with it today. For centuries, mankind has fought and continues to fight each other over religion. Why? The answer is simple...they fight over dominance. They want to prove that their religion is more correct as well as superior over every other religion. What people fail to realize is that there is more than what meets the eye. No matter what religion, it is designed to unite people together regardless of their differences for the greater good. Assess the view that religion is a major source of instability and conflict in society today

Religions differing has caused many conflicts throughout history. “The feeling of attachment to tribalism and fake patriotism under the umbrella of religion is stronger and more apparent than respect for human rights and pluralism” (Mhamed 2). When people are tied so greatly to their religion, they will be willing to throw away their morals and do whatever they deem is right for their beliefs, leading to constant wars. “different tribal and so-called patriotic groups resort to religion to gain legacy and popularity” (Mhamad 2). As a scholar taking the class ‘Introduction to World Religions”, I had the opportunity to take part in a culture that is not normally found in the western world. I entered the Mon Buddhist Monastery in Akron, Ohio on October 2nd, 2016 only to be amazed at their way of life. Going into the temple, I knew of the basic religious practices and traditions that the monks and Buddhists had participated in daily. When I was coming up to the monastery, it did not look like anything other than an old brick building, but once we were inside it looked like a recreational area. Somewhere where they would meditate, hold daily activities, and teach the younger Buddhist about their way of life. On the far back wall, there was a stunning shrine dedicated to the Buddha where one would pray. Many figurines were displayed as well as flowers and offerings along it.

As Protestantism began to spread in Europe, tension arose between Catholics and Protestants. The tension caused war between monarchs, nobles, and common people over religion. However, the many wars evolved into being about much more than religion; they became about politics and specifically, a struggle for power. Many people throughout Europe saw religion as a perfect pretext for the real reason of war: power. Through the seemingly infinite wars of religion, politics and religion came hand in hand. As exemplified by the Dutch Revolt and the Thirty Years’ War, religion was the starting cause of both wars, but political power was the true justification in the end.

Religion plays a vital role in everyone’s life one way or another. Whether it be a small influence for major decisions or influence for even the most mundane tasks. Religion can be used as an excuse for certain actions, whether good or bad, and can spark hate amongst people who do not share their beliefs. Religion is a powerful thing. However, when left open to interpretation can cause a dangerous impact to everyone around.

All through history, religion and what God someone follows has drastically affected their lifestyle by affecting their political statuses. The way someone lived was determined by what religion they followed politically,economically and socially. Most colonies official religion was Anglican/Church of England or Christianity but some did not have an official religion which created problems. The slaves that were forcefully immigrated to the colonies were not able to practice their own religion because some owner were extremely religious and other were not able to connect to their God or Gods. American history demonstrate that religion and the God someone followed had drastic effects with politics by not being able to be part of it, economy by not being able to own any land and make money for himself , and society by not being about to join any communities or organization extremely affected slaves to reach true happiness in the place they call home.

Religion is important to most of the world's population. Throughout history, religion has played a key role in shaping events. While ignorance contributes to intolerance and hate, understanding how others believe fosters not only respect but also peaceful coexistence. Through the centuries, people have done much good in the name of religion (Haynes). Examples can be given to the Crusades.

There have been a variety of conflicts in the world since the beginning of the human civilization, many of which get their roots from the beliefs of their different religions. In order to understand and eliminate the conflicts originated from different religions, it is important to take a look at the similarities and differences among Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

When discussing religion, many people have different perspectives about religion beliefs and how to approach it. Religion is grouped in different sections such as, religion and spirituality, religion and philosophy, and religion and politics. Religion has many different views from different cultures because everyone approaches it differently with different beliefs also. To make something religion, is to have some type of belief in God, but everyone’s belief is different depending on the culture someone is located in. In society back then and today, religion has no set essence of a definition because of the different aspects people group religion in. Religion has its shares of promoting violence. Many will argue that a cause of religion wars is for economic and political reasons, but others argue that those who start wars are, by definition, not religious. In reality, separating religion out of economic and political motives can be involved in such a way finding religious motives innocent of much. Each day, we are surrounded by the effect of religion. From the laws we follow, to the traditions that we uphold, the varying religions found throughout the world shape the experiences we have. Religion serves as a firm foundation of principles of which many of us choose to follow. What happens when two parties refuse to agree on the underlying principles guiding a particular belief? When the substructure of a religious group serves as inadequate to fulfill the needs of its followers, the resulting conflict can affect many aspects of our lives. The Sunni Shiite Divide serves as an excellent example of the social problems that may arise from the conflict of one major religious group.

Religion has been a powerful force in human history. Mankind has longed and searched for the answers to its purpose, the reason for being and the possibility of life after physical death. They reasoned that an afterlife would be a place of accounting and reckoning for the life they lived on earth. Religious belief systems seemed to give the answers as to how to prepare for the afterlife. Religion became the means of giving answers to those basic yet deep-seated questions of both life and death. Religion provided a format of rules and laws for conduct and treatment toward others based on the desires and wishes of a god or gods that people envisioned, imagined or invented. Religious belief systems have been a powerful force for good and bad...good in the sense that it provided a measure of individual behavior and order in society for the wellbeing of the whole, but bad in the sense that men of ambition who craved power and control over others would often use religion as a tool of manipulation and fear. A casual glance of history tells us that complete civilizations have been built, grown and maintained around elaborate religious systems, ancient Egypt being a prime example.

Religion has not often been a topic that comes to mind when bringing up globalization, and that could be because globalization relates to economic and political thought (Mahjabeen). Stackhouse says, "Scholars see globalization as an economic phenomenon of capitalist expansion, one that brings the destruction of culture and a degradation of society and nature." (page numer) If Buddhism becomes globalized, sooner or later, the world can become a more peaceful place. This new idea of "globalization," that scholars have only been made aware of in the past couple decades has been around for quite some time. Mahjabeen says, "With globalization, we have seen the emergence of human rights and environmentalist groups that aim to protect people. The spread of peaceful religions has led to conversations about poverty, war, and environment to be on a global scale instead of just within about country or nation." (page number).
