Disputes over land seem to be a catalyst for almost every hostility and war since the dawn of time. The addition of politics and religion into the matter only serves to aggravate an already tense situation. Kashmir knows this all too well. The conflict between Hindus and Muslims seems to be an ever reoccurring battle. This is also evidenced in population battles. Hindus make up the social majority of the population of India by almost eighty percent. Feelings of tension and uneasiness are a natural reaction to being dominated by a majority and are a problem unto itself.
There were conflicts in the early 1940s at religious events. An example is when the Hindu event Holi, also known as the festival of colors, featured riots. There were also cases when sacred cows were murdered. Additionally, there were times when Hindu music was loudly played by mosques during the prayer time. Segregation of the religions was promoted as Muslim’s could only use ‘Mohammedan refreshment room’ at train stations. Muslims could only use the tap waters labeled ‘Muslim water’ and Hindus could only use the taps labeled ‘Hindu water’. The president of the Muslim League, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, told a British interviewer, “We are different beings, there is nothing in life which links us together. Our names, our clothes, our foods-they are all different; our economic life, our educational ideas, our treatment of women, our attitude to animals….We challenge each other at every point of the compass”. Professor Mohammad Mujeeb from the distinct
The slaughtering of 1.5 million innocent people at the hands of a cruel failing empire. Families and friends torn apart for no reason and all while being silenced from the rest of the world. The Armenian Genocide was swept under the rug by the successor to the Ottoman empire, the Turkish Republic. The cruelty in slaughtering millions of people, to using them for slave labor, and numerous death camps for women and children the Armenian Genocide was a tragic time in the history of Armenians and they are being denied recognition for their ancestors tragic loss of life. The crimes against humanity caused by the Ottomans and the Turks in the killing of millions of people is further inflated by the deliberate withholding
During his final years, Gandhi walked from town to town where Hindus were being murdered in retaliation for the killings of Muslims of Bihar. The massacres and fighting ended because of
Genocide is a term that can be defined as a planned and systematic destruction of whole or parts of certain national, religious, race, ethnic, cultural or political group (Akhavan 21). Genocide is deliberated with a different set of actions for a purpose to destroy an essential foundation of life. Genocide is characterized with the massive killing of members of a group, causing mental or bodily injuries to a group of people, imposing mechanisms to prevent birth, removing particular group children and putting conditions of life in order to bring to an end existence of a particular group. Therefore, genocide is an illegal action and a crime recognized and punishable by international law (Charmy 35). For instance, Rwanda genocide is characterized by ethnic tensions within the country. Initially the definition of the term genocide as by genocide convection only comprised of racial, ethnic, national and religious groups. They argued that inclusion of other groups cannot strengthen but rather weakens it. This definition failed to recognize other groups such as political groups, economic and cultural groups that are essential elements of genocide. Genocide therefore, is generally considered the worst moral crime the ruling authority can commit against those it controls Naimark (2017).
The 1984 Sikh riots also known as the Sikh Massacre or the genocide of Sikhs, started after the murder of Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India by her own two Sikh bodyguards. The reason behind this was to take the revenge from Mrs. Gandhi as it was her decision to have an attack on the Golden Temple, one of the biggest holy place of the Sikh community. Her order was named as Operation Blue Star, motivated to take out terrorists who had blocked off themselves inside the temple. (Kundu 2017). As the result of this army attack many of the Sikh buildings of Amritsar were destroyed and some
In the first few days, more than 10,000 people were captured by ISIS in the month of August, and that number has only grown over the past couple of years. Many people who escaped did not survive in the high of 122° fahrenheit without food, water, or medical aid. The identification process of Yazidi people was simple for ISIS. They were seperated from families into men, women, elderly, young girls, young boys, and babies. All are forced to convert, and if they refuse this, they will be killed. Young boys are most valuable to ISIS because of the influence, they could have on the boys. The boys are trained in camps to follow Islamic beliefs, become fighters, bombers, executioners, and are destined to become kamikazes. Women were forced to convert
The massacres were an attempt to create a new pure Turkish state. Under the Turks, the ethnic and religious diversity of the Ottoman Empire disappeared; for this the Arabs rebelled and freed themselves from tyranny. In order to do this, forced migration of the Armenian people occurred. When the Turks were not gaining the results they wanted, massacres were performed to quicken results. This attempt to restore the Ottoman empire back to its former Islamic state from the 1800s failed.
First the british took over the india which in then were able to use their resources like cows and pigs. The effects of this were both for resources and religion wise. Cows and pigs were sacred for the indian people because of their religion. The effect of this was the india’s revolting against the british because they were offended by this act of the killing of their sacred animals. In the end they ended up losing but still making a point of their religion.
Calling the massacre a riot completely mischaracterizes the violence and hid what actually occurred (Noor). A riot implies the actions that took place were unplanned and unorganized chaos. That is far from the truth. There is no doubt an attempt was made to “destroy the Sikh’s as a group” (Singh, Parvinder). They used the “method of burning by kerosene,” and the targeting of Sikh children as well as Sikh men, and “subjecting women to rape” (ibid). Instead of owning up to what they did, the government remains disinterested with the Sikh people. The Indian government does not even have the decency to address the genocide by its actual name. The people in the Indian government want what is best for themselves. Once finally forced to address the genocide in 2000, the government of India announced “for the backing and help of influential and resourceful persons, killing of Sikhs so swiftly and in large numbers could not have happened” (Walia). The government calls the genocide a communal riot, which incorrectly defines the problem, and because of this, the genocide has not received an appropriate response. The Indian government, as well as the international community, has not come to terms that a crime against humanity has occurred, not a riot. The Sikh people deserve justice. They have attempted to create movements to receive their deserved justice, but none of the movements have given them closure. The Sikh people want answers as to why the Indian government will not admit their flaws and continue to avoid the
Steven Pinker implied that, “As long as your ideology identifies the main source of the world's ills as a definable group, it opens the world up to the mass murder of people” (1). Steven Pinker revealed an interesting side to the controversial topic of mass murders and the causes of them. He revealed that as long as people in this world believe that they are better than other due to their race, religion, and everything else that defines a group of people as different from another group of people. People are and have been wrongfully treated differently due to the incompetence of some to realize that everyone is equal. They often believe that they were superior to others because of their physical attributes and beliefs that they had. The Holocaust is a major example of the ignorance of some in history. This ignorance often resulted in the murders and mistreatment of many. Elie Wiesel was one of the six million plus people who were wrongfully mistreated during the Holocaust. Many believe that this sort of event could not occur in the current time period because people have become more civilized and tolerable to the differences of others, but sadly the world is not ready to contain a social utopia. The mass murder, and violence that is occurring in Darfur is one of the many things that shows that the world is far from achieving this social utopia. Throughout history, many occurrences of genocide have occurred due to the diversity of people and even though society has evolved

The act of genocide is an extremity that accompanies the ever modernizing world, a reality that is increasingly discovered as the twentieth century inched toward the twenty-first. Cambodia, a country located in southeast Asia, is unlucky enough to have fallen under the terror of their own personalized war on humanity. A purpose whose plans took root in the quest for an egalitarian system, and thus purposefully began attacking its own economy. All the while destroying any constructs the Pol Pot regime felt may lead to a type of variety among the people, for there is safety in homogeneity. And so this culture suffered through extermination, whether that be in religion, music, or even in common family and friend relationships. Cambodia has been stripped of its individuality through each and every citizen for the sake of uniformity. When such a conflict as this, has finally come to an end it is undeniable that the process of rebuilding must commence. That reconstruction aimed toward all that has been destroyed: the economy, all types of infrastructure, a sense of community among the people. It is the responsibility of the country, as well as the developed outside world, to distribute aid toward this process. Far too often foreigners invade with their own objectives disguised as good will. Post-genocide Cambodia has for years received aid that was either, unable to meet it’s needs or not established long enough to make a significant or lasting difference. What is necessary is a
The number of Native Americans throughout American from the time of the Europeans arriving to now has dramatically dropped. As churchill argues in, A Little Matter of Genocide, it was not just a coincidence so many of these indigenous people died, it was genocide. Genocide is the deliberate killing attempt to wipe out a religion, race, or culture of people. However, it was not all Europeans who participated in this effort to kill off the natives.
Genocides refer to specific calculated arrangements by an ethnic or religious group, leader or government to intentionally eliminate an entire group of people for political, religious, or cultural reasons. They typically consist of mass murders that is abnormal for warfare. Although most people are aware of the Holocaust, that event was not the first. Genocides have occurred as early as the 15th century. Gendercides, or genocides in which only a specific gender is targeted, have occurred as early as the medieval period. Recently in India, the amount of females being born has drastically dropped over the years. The female gender in India is decreasing because men encourage women to abort their children if they are not men. More importantly,
