PROFESSOR ANTONY ANTOKIN
I went to the Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Church in San Francisco. They established in December 1857 in San Francisco then later incorporated into Greek Russian Slavonian belief. During the late 1880s, the population of the church exponentially increased, when Greek Immigration exploded and the church was firmly confirmed as the place for dedicated worship to the Greek Orthodox faith. After developing in community and belief, construction of the actual church only began in 1903, when they officially became the Greek Orthodox Church in San Francisco.
The Eastern Orthodox Faith becoming the second largest is branch of Christianity that teaches what apostolic practices orientating from the original faith of the apostles. Eastern Orthodox teaching teaches that all bishops are equal but worships the Holy Synod instead, dividing it from the roman catholic faith. The church traces it origins from Greece, Easter Europe, and Russia but has developed modernly in many parts if the world including San Francisco. The church doesn’t have a patriarch, a pope, nor does it believes in the Bible but doesn’t believe the Holy trinity. God is our father, Christ is the son, our mother is holy Christ and our lord is the Holy Spirit.
During the service I attended, services in the church and involve both the clergy and faithfuls and cannot be conducted with a single person. I was
When Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople the Christian churches of Rome and Constantinople found themselves at odds. They ended up differing on many subjects. Over the years they gradually grew apart until the final split happened in 1054. This continues to today. The differences are slight but significant. The Roman church continued with using Latin as the official language, giving the Pope the ultimate authority, but not allowing priests to get married (Doc C). Whilst the Eastern Orthodox church decided to have Greek as the official language, instead of a Pope they had a ceremonial leader, also known as the Patriarch (who could marry); this is because Constantinople failed to see the Pope as the supreme authority. Their interpretation of the bible was also a bit different (Doc C). In the world there are about 120,845,374 people who worship Orthodox Christianity. Though there are many branches of it. Most of the religion stays in the Eastern side of the world, except the 5,000,000 or so Americans (Doc C). If it hadn’t been for the Byzantines stepping out
One of the main differences between Catholic and Orthodox is the belief in the Papacy. Papacy is the authority or the office that is held by a Pope. A Pope is the highest Bishop of Rome who direct the Roman Catholic Church. So, according to
The process by which Scripture has been preserved and compiled is one whose history is worth noting. The early church had many opportunities to share the Good News of Christ via word of mouth, but from the time of Christ’s resurrection until the mid-second century, there had not been a single culmination of writings considered to be essential for the purposes of
Church of the Holy Sepulchre is also known as the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and the Church of the Resurrection (Orthodox Christians). Originally identified as being outside the settlement of Calvary, it is located in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel and is considered one of the holiest sites in the world, as well as being a central destination for Christian pilgrims. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was originally built by the Roman Emperor Constantine (272-337) in 330 CE upon the site of a Roman temple. It has since been controlled by Arab rulers, reclaimed by Christian crusaders, repeatedly ruined by fires and conquests, and long been subject to regional religious and political tensions. The Holy Sepulchre is a central Church in
The topic of this paper is The Church Committee. When I first got the topic I was not sure what it was, but after I researched it I was very surprised. The Church Committee Report consists of 14 public reports. They were written in 1976 and 1975 when recommendations for reform were debated in congress and some cases were carried out. The reports contain information on the formation, operation, and the abuse of the US intelligence agencies. The six books covered committee writings on various topic investigated. There are seven volumes which contains public hearings and exhibits.
The religious institution that I selected was the C3 church at 1065 WALTHER BLVD, LAWRENCEVILLE 30043. I choose this because it is the closest to my household which, is approximately a mile and a half down the boulevard. Also, I use their gym facility which, is C3 Fitness. So, basically the church and gym are combined into one large building. Both of which are open to anyone as long as you pay a once-a-month fee to the fitness center but, the church is unrestricted. I would probably feel more awkward going anywhere else because as a black male. I do not think that any other church would believe that I was suddenly interested into things like Buddhism, Taoism, or anything else like Catharism. Christianity without a doubt is the least complex
On April 4, Philadelphia Liberty Community Church(P) held it's regular Monday bible study. Several people were invited but finally only Esau attended.
For this assignment I took part in a religious service at a small Orthodox Church in Baltimore.
Divine Street United Methodist Church has been a major facet of my life. This is the establishment that gave my parents the resources to raise me to find solace in a religious community, and witnessed my growth from a caring and involved perspective. The congregation has supported me through the many challenges and successes of my young life.
The Trinity Lutheran Church is preschool and daycare center, this organization is open whole year to help working families. The Trinity Lutheran Church located in Boone County, Missouri. The territory of church has a children’s playground, which surrounded by pea gravel. Due to the fact that kids are young and may injure themselves if they fall on hard pea gravel, the Trinity Church sent application to take part in program to replace the pea gravel on recycled tires to upgrade playgrounds. Whereupon their application got denied. As a result of which the church seek legal redress in a lower court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit where it got denied second time based on Constitution of Missouri that says that no public finding can go to religious
The differences derive from theology. Both Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Catholics understand God to exist in three forms, known as the Trinity. God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father refers to God’s role as the creator of the world. The Son refers to Jesus. Finally, the Holy Spirit, they believe, enters people's souls during their daily lives. Another similarity is that holding reverence for the saints plays a central role in the spiritual lives of Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Catholics. The physical representation of the saints tends to take different forms, however. Roman Catholics usually use statutes to represent their saints, as evident in St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church; meanwhile, Orthodox Catholics more often use paintings to represent their saints, as evident at St. Michael’s Antiochian Orthodox Church. Another difference between the two is that for Roman Catholics there is a procedure for choosing officially sanctioned saints. This process does not exist in the Orthodox community. The central doctrinal divide between the two Christian churches concerns the Pope and his supremacy. Roman Catholics believe the Pope is the living embodiment of Jesus. He is then, in their opinion, the head of the entire Christian religion. Eastern Orthodox Catholics view the Pope as the head of Christianity in Rome, a geographical
Women play a complex role in Robert Orsi’s The Madonna on 115th Street, at some points exercising power and at other points exercising less power than men. In Italian Harlem when describing a “domus,” the woman at the center is the one actually being described. A domus, according to Emmanuel LeRoy Ladurie, “constitute[s] a formidable reservoir of power and counter-power which could hold out with some degree of success against the external powers surrounding it.” Italian women in Harlem had no direct power in the outside world, but they were able to use their sphere of influence to leave their mark. The power that women in Italian Harlem have is given to them by the matriarchal society modeled by the church.
On the Sunday, the 20th of September I went to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church located in 4335 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20011. The church rents out the National Theater for service every Sunday. This church is a non-denominational church and it is not at all traditional. The Pastor is Brandon Samuel, a middle-aged man with a wife and kids. The service was from 10:00 am to about 12:00 pm. I am a Christian so this church experience was not new to me, but it was quite different from my church at home as the church I attend back home is a Pentecostal church.
Despite the fact that both are branches of Christianity as a whole, Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism seem to have poor opinions of each other. They share many core beliefs regarding Jesus
This was a fun assignment and I learned about the Christian Reformed Church (CRC). Although, I am not a Calvinist, the CRC’s position on the authority of the Bible appears to believe the same as me, that the Scriptures are sufficient and no other source is needed. However, there is mention of “Freedom of interpretation” that confuses me a bit. For this assignment I have broken down the CRC position sentences to dissect each major claim.
