Based off of the character played in the video game, being a Renaissance art patron proved to be difficult. Obviously I started out as simply a merchant trying to make a living and come out with a substantial profit that would then allow myself to buy art. As soon as I started to buy art, things became more difficult as far as business. When just being a merchant selling wool, alum, and linen, I did sell between countries and had some issues when it came to doing business with rivaling countries, but when I incorporated art into the mix, I began to deal with personal relations with the church and the pope. Since such a great deal of art was created to honor god and show how devoted you were to the church by how extravagant and expensive the pieces were, trading between countries would also cause issues with the reputation within the church. The Issue that seemed to be the most problematic with being an art merchant, was how after you buy or …show more content…
The reading mentioned that many paintings that attained such popularity and meaning were not things that had been painted and then sold to a buyer. They were created by the painter to meet the requests of their client. Artist were commissioned to do public paintings or paint churches were the ones who gained most fame. But they did not just start painting these paintings because they wanted to go out and paint on the side of a chapel, they did it because they were paid to do and entered into a legal contract sometimes. In today's market, a lot of artists do it the opposite. They create pieces from self expression and then put these pieces out in the market and buyers find them. In the reading and video game, art patrons would seek out artist to carry out a vision or specific message that they wanted to make known through art. Where in today's world artists create art for themselves as a way to display the messages they
In the article “Conditions of Trade,” Michael Baxandall explains that fifteenth-century Italian art is a “deposit” resulting from the commercial interaction between the artist and the purchaser, who he refers to as a client. These works, as such, are “fossils of economic life,” and money, and they play an important role in the history of art. In our current perception of the relationship between the artist and art, “painters paint what they think is best, and then look around for a buyer” . However in the past, especially during the Renaissance period, the customers determined the content and form of paintings, as it was them who commissioned the work before it was created. He states that the artists and clients were interconnected and

Whether it is painting, drawing or sculpting, marginal art forms have become commodities. In addition, artists are becoming more popular for their fame rather than the content of their pieces. As artists have gone from creators to celebrities who happen to create, they are able to use their artwork to their own selfish benefit. In the Banksy film, “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, these issues are brought to life and help viewers realize that art as a commodity is not necessarily a good thing. When a marginal art form becomes commodified and a cult of celebrity emerges, the art loses its value and the genuine purpose and priorities are altered.
Religious artwork has been prevalent throughout all of history. Christian artwork has been ever changing and evolving based on what it going on during the time period in which the work was created. In Romanesque artwork, art was imaginative and involved mysticism along with themes that represented their fears of the end of the world. In Gothic artwork, the art turned away from evoking fear and instead had the goal of bringing people into the church. In the fourteenth century, the religious art responded to the crises of the time period. During the Renaissance, artwork shifted to an interest in realism, which can be seen in Raphael’s Madonna and Child with the Young Saint John. The medium for this work of art is oil paint. it was painted in 1500 and is 47 inches in diameter.
The Renaissance occurred in Europe between 1400 and 1600. This event began in Italy during the Medieval period and then expanded to the rest of Europe, marking the start of the Modern age. The Renaissance began in Florence Italy in the 14th century. It was a cultural movement that had an enormous impact in Europe during the early modern period. The idea that the Reformation was not just a religious movement, but an extension and/or development of the Renaissance was easily depicted during the Middle Ages. The term Reformation implies renewal and/or rebirth which was an apparent theme during the Renaissance. This can be seen in the art work of Renaissance artists as the influence of classical subjects and themes were revived. Additionally, the idea of individuality and humanism were also key parts of the Renaissance as well as the Reformation. Furthermore, teaching that the work of justification in our lives is work of grace, greatly influenced the work ethic of the people during the Northern Renaissance. Therefore, it’s clear to see that although the Reformation’s major focus was

Patronage was an essential aspect to the life of a painter. While some artists could sell their works commercially on the market,
Art during the early renaissance time period was mostly commissioned by wealthy and powerful families. Ruling families were accepted by the average public. These families commissioned various and lavish artworks.
Drawing during the Renaissance was used as a multi-purpose tool that assisted in the artists' creative process and individuality. Before the Renaissance period, drawings were used for story telling or other primitive examples of art. As history progresses into the 15th century, artists began using the methods of drawing to spontaneously express their creativity. What made drawing unique throughout Renaissance history is that they were never commissioned pieces; rather, they were used for personal collection and private eyes instead of being viewed by the public. These collections often included observations of the natural world b going out and studying how nature functioned. Leonardo da Vinci is a primary example for the use of drawing to

The art market separate parts are: a money economy (or the Market) and the economy of attention, according to Malcolm Bull. These economies of the art world function separately, yet they can overlap each other. Bull clarifies the Market as the purchasing sector of the rich elitists of society; where as the economy of attention, a modern development, is based on the value of the reputation among iconic institutions and galleries. As strong as the social trend of money as power, the credibility of curators, critics and the institutions give weight to the attention they give with shows, reviews, etc. This is how an artist can be successful in the oversaturated market, while not reaching sales in the Market. Bull used [artprice.com] to gain auction sale data to understand the money economy which is reflective of confirmed sale values through the second sale of an artist work, while his data on the economy of art is from [artfacts.net].
When the new upper class movement, Renaissance, occurred in Italy around the 14th century, a revival of the classical forms originally developed by the ancient Greeks and Romans, an intensified concern with secular life, and interest in humanism and assertion of the importance of the individual began. Thus, artists such as Mosaccio and Giotto depicted art that unlike the Middle Ages, showed emotions, feelings, and bright colors, thus demonstrating the deep concern for naturalism in the society. Other artists during the Italian Renaissance period such as Giovanni Bellini began to express their art through secular and religious themes and ideas that were exhibited through landscapes and portraits. As new styles of

While there were artists like who criticized for their work due to their gender, like Rosalba Carriera (female artist).
