How does editing, mis en scene, sound and cinematography in the opening sequence of Requiem for a dream represent the effects of drug abuse on the main characters?
Requiem for a dream was made in 2000, and was directed by Darren Aronofsky.
The film exposes the truth about drug addiction and the effects it has on peoples lives. It also shows people who are trying to fit into society which can have disastrous effects which causes them to turn to drugs to fit in. Popping pills, cooking heroin, injecting, the dilation of the pupils, the coursing of blood through the veins, these images speed through the film and are repeated endlessly much as addiction itself is a repetition of the day to day business of finding and taking drugs.
He also show a close up of the drug that is being used because it fills the screen so it’s the main focus which represents that that is all the character wants. Then you see the injection, pill or snorting and a close up of the pupils dilating. This is all shot with non- diegetic sounds which are short and acute to make the audience see the reality of drug use. These sequences are shot in fast motion so that the audience understand how quickly the drugs take effect and how quickly they fade which shows the audience why drug addicts crave their next fix.
Aronofsky’s use of colour and sound create a natural beauty which is threatened by T.V mentality and drug addiction. Aronofsky represents the media badly in the film by starting the film with a T.V show that has people hooked with its chances to win prizes and a vital disequilibrium of a false advert that sees Sara Goldfarb spiral into drug addiction. The film also represents Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory that people want to fit into a group in society. Modern music is shown to be a heavy influence on peoples lives,
In the infamous 1980s drug PSA “This is your Brain on Drugs”, the viewer is interrupted from their Saturday cartoons in a way that is jarring and pulls them out of whatever else they were thinking, to focus all their immediate attention on the screen. A middle aged man comes on the screen without any introduction and says, “Is there anyone out there who still isn’t clear what doing drugs does?” This captures the viewer’s attention immediately due to the expertise in casting and the brilliance of the way the actor plays his role. This man is the platonic ideal of the white, middle class, suburban father that nearly every one of the PSA’s target socioeconomic background recognizes immediately. The man stands several feet above the reference point of the camera, creating a first person view placing the viewer in the position of being scolded by a much taller authority figure. Without much pause he goes on to say in a scolding tone “Okay. Last time.” This man has become your father, and you respect him just as much. The viewer doesn’t think about the absurdity of the proposition that this character in a drug awareness PSA will give the viewer

The movie starts off with a group of teenagers in school, all from different social groups. In Requiem for a Dream, the main character, Harry Goldfarb is a heavy drug user. He is addicted to heroin and any other substance that he can inject into his veins. He uses marijuana and other drugs occasionally, but heroin is his drug of choice. The film opens with a symptom of Harry's addiction. He is stealing his mother's television set to pawn for money to buy drugs, which she then re-purchases later in the day and the cycle continues. Harry is clearly failing to fill his social role as a son in order to get high. The drugs come first to
The movie industry has involved the use of drugs, sex, violence over the years to increase the thrill of movies. Realistic depictions or not, movies with any of these three categories have been frequently viewed and accepted in our culture. With movies creating false “fictional drugs,” along with amplifying the side effects of prescription drugs, it is crucial to critique what is actually true or not. Whether or not the drug’s effects are medically correct has been glanced over by many. Directed by Scott Calvert in 1995, the movie The Basketball Diaries focuses on the substance abuse of heroin by the main character, Jim.
