Introduction I used the proposal developed in the 692 Research Methods and Design course to collect data that would answer my main question, “With what frequency and consistency do students and professors use the literacy support services available at River Community College?” and its four sub-questions. This data was collected between January 11 to March 31, 2016. The support provided by my family, Dr. Wilcox, my 694 Reading Research Practicum fellow student, and my selected critical colleague allowed me to successfully complete my data collection, my analysis, and my report.
Educational Research Research, educational and action, are key to the continued improvement of educational methodologies and strategies. Educational research provides theories and pedagogy by organizing “empirical facts” (Johnson, 2012, p. 9). These scientific studies reach peer-reviewed conclusions that can be applied in multiple situations. Action research is more specific and focuses to provide a usable action plan (Johnson, 2012, p. 16). In the 692 and 694 courses, I use the five essential steps (Johnson, 2012, p. 16) to conduct an action research project by asking if students at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) were given literacy support because so many of my students seemed to struggle with reading and comprehending course texts and writing course assignments, even though they demonstrated interest in and understanding of the material in class. I also was concerned with the high rate
The third theme emerged as a pattern once the data was woven from the threads of data collected from the sub-questions. The surveys and interviews answering the questions “What types of support and resources are available?” and “What knowledge do students and professors have of the available literacy support systems?” revealed that most of the available services were well-known by students and professors, except for a very important few. The third sub-question, “What are the professor referral rates to the Early Alert System?” revealed the answer was not very many, and those that used the system used it with a varied frequency. The low response to professor surveys
The purpose of this action research study is to discover the use of the literacy support services for students and professors at Community College. At this stage of the research, the literacy support services will generally be described as the tools and services needed to support the literacy of the students at Community College. The guiding question is “With what frequency and consistency do students and professors use the literacy support services available at Community College?”. The sub-concepts are the needs for the services, types of support and resources available, professor referral rates, student knowledge of the support, support personnel resources and strategies, and barriers to effective use. The keywords used for acquiring literary references included: adult literacy, alternative textbooks, assistive software, college support services, disability support, dyslexia in adults, Early Alert System, English language learners, instructional support, instructional technologies, interdisciplinary studies, and SARS Early Alert System.
Section 1 Background will introduce the research problem and focus of the study, as well as establish its significance to the educational leadership and management specialization. This section will also include the Literature Review which will address the historical background, the organizational context, and the theoretical framework of the project. Section 2 Process will include the Methodology. The methodology will contain a description of the participants, the instruments used for the data collection, and a description of the overall research design. Section 3 Application will comprise the Results and Conclusion. The results section will report findings that will be presented in tables, figures and narrative, and the conclusion section will include the overall assessment of the quality of the action research and any recommendations for future
The artifacts serve as evidence of having met the program outcome because they focused about action research and learning the structure that would help this learner to examine ways to improve her educational institution. She would apply her practice of action research to execute effectively her issue found and build an analysis to influence others. This particular artifacts were chosen over others because, they both received distinguish components in each section of the competency, and demonstrated her knowledge and skills to successfully completed these assignments. Therefore, these artifacts presented effectively the essential elements needed to solve problems and rationalize her data in regards of the HCZ case study.
"Action research is the process through which teachers collaborate in evaluating their practice jointly; raise awareness of their personal theory; articulate a shared conception of values; try out new strategies to render the values expressed in their practice more consistent with the educational values they espouse; record their work in a form which is readily available to and understandable by other teachers; and thus develop a shared theory of teaching by researching practice." - John Elliott
Action research is a collaborative approach to research that provides people with the means to take systematic action in an effort to resolve specific problems. Action research focuses on methods and techniques of investigation that take into account the study population’s history, culture, interactive activities and emotional lives. Although action research makes use of many traditional data-gathering strategies, its orientation and purpose are slightly different. The basic action research procedural routine involves four stages; (1) identifying the research question (s), (2) gathering the information to answer the questions (s), (3) analyzing and interpreting the information and (4) sharing the results with the participants (Berg, 2004).
Literacy in today’s society is more demanding than it was in the past. Literacy instruction needs to improve in every area, because many students do not have the skills needed to succeed in everyday life (Meltzer, Smith & Clark, 2001). Research has showed that by the year 2020, over seventy-five percent of every job will require people to have a higher education than just the average high school diploma (Bottoms, 2002). For students with low literacy it will make it very challenging to achieve this new requirement. Therefore these students are not able to cope in society and turn to a negative life style (Van Ngo, 2001).
Learning the four stages of action research will help plan for an appropriate project. They are the planning, acting, developing and reflecting stages (Mertler, 2014). Mertler said that "action research is characterized as research that is done by teachers for themselves"( Mertler, 2014, p. 4). Obtaining information that is authentic and trustworthy using the scientific method seems to be a useful strategy for solving problems in one 's class. I like this approach since I am a science teacher.
Which of the following is NOT a situation in which exploratory research should be used?
| Action Research- an informal, qualitative, interpretive, reflective and experimental methodology that requires all the participants to be collaborative researchers. Action research is carried out be people who usually recognize a problem or limitation in their workplace situation and, together,
Action research methodology involves societal and psychosomatic research to help researchers to categorize social issues in a group or within the community, by using active participation in the research the group for the express exertion to solve the issues. Action research is in any environment where people will engage in a collective manner and are goal directed. Action research starts with an action theory the primary focus of the theory is to introduce changes brought about by the conjecture of the community, group or organization. Action research relies upon the evident gathered from numerous standpoints, while lending to a more effective strategy to progress a community, organization or groups as a whole. You will gain knowledge through the point of action research application, it involves problem solving as the research progresses a solution will be achieved resulting in your action development plan however, they are not considered irrefutable or unconditional (Miller, G. E. 2003).
The second approach will be to apply a form of action research, which is the notion of inquiring into, or investigating something in a systematic manner (Merriam & Tisdell, 2015). Often used in organizational settings, action research is designed to evaluate practices in order to bring social change. This approach will be implemented through a one on one structured interview where the researcher will reference a
A sample is a set of data drawn from the population, it is considered as a subset. Populations are defined as the set of all items or individuals of interest. Samples are less time consuming than a census, less costly to administer than a census and it is possible to obtain statistical results of a sufficiently high precision based on samples. There are two types of sampling techniques, probability and non-probability sampling.

This chapter presents the research methodology employed in this thesis in respect of the research objectives by ensuring the application of the appropriate methodology. Among other things the research design, population, sampling procedures and sample size, data collection technique and research instrument were discussed. Finally, the data analysis and research limitations were looked at.
