Model Answer- Participant Observation One strength of using participant observation to investigate the idea that ethnic minorities are treated differently within the education system is that it allows the researcher to join in. They will be placed in the same situation that teachers find themselves in routinely, which will allow them to see things through the teachers eyes. This means that the researcher will be able to see things from the same perspective as teachers. This would allow the researcher to create a close bond with the teacher/s and this would mean that they would be more likely to confide. This is particularly important as this is a sensitive subject area. Teachers may only show their true feelings, opinions and …show more content…
It is conducted in real life and the researcher becomes part of this, so it can be generalised to the outside world.
When investigating teachers there are a number of practical issues that need to be taken into consideration. Teachers may feel that they do not have the time to commit to taking part in a piece of research. Teachers may also need permission from their line manager or more senior management to take part in any piece of research.
There are also a number of ethical issues that need to be taken into account when researching teachers. As participant observation the researcher will have access to the staff room. Teachers in the staff room will feel like they are in a safe environment to express their feelings. The researcher may hear things from teachers who have not given consent to take part in the research. Does the researcher use this or remain ethical and ignore it?
There are also a number of theoretical issues to consider when researching teachers. The issue of teachers behaving uncharacteristically because they have an observer in the classroom has already been discussed. In addition to this, any teaching staff who take part may have been selected by senior members of staff to show the school in the best possible light. This would make the findings unrepresentative and would mean that the findings would not be able to be generalised to other educational settings.
This type of approach would be favoured by interpretivists.
Chapter two of the Educational Research Planning, Conducting, and Evaluating Qualitative Research, composed of the research problem, one needs to address some sort of controversy in education. One needs to understand if the topic if the topic is important enough to study, how the study will add to current research or understandings, and finally who will benefit from the study (Creswell, 2015). Chapter three is consumed with the understanding of literature and it relevance to the problem at hand (Creswell, 2015). By using mono cultural resource are students of color being disadvantaged? The majority of teachers, as well the authors of textbook and testing questions have a predominantly European ancestry. Students of color are expected to conform to these resources.
Schools systematically subjugate minority and black students when a school’s enrollment contains a huge racial majority. If students have no exposure to persons of different ethnicities, cultures, races, and religions, then these students will experience culture shock when they confront “other” people. Even in our class, we talk about black and minority students as another group, one that differs from “us.” We think about the inequalities in school systems as problems we need to fix, not as problems that have influenced our thinking and affect us as prospective teachers. For example, a white graduate student with

Research has been conducted and the study showed that, "Latino students perceived that teachers' actions escalated disciplinary problems and believed that administrators used unfair and discriminatory practices"(90). Educators will never be able to teach students if the students perceive them as being racist. The degree to which education for cultural diversity is realized depends on the teacher's attitudes, knowledge, and behavior. They make the mistake of mismatching their own life experiences and professional training. Le Roux realizes that an increasing diverse school population encounters a mostly middle-class teaching force that is inadequately prepared to manage the reality of diversity in schools, and that is due to lack of knowledge of diversity (46). He also states that some teachers make the mistake of generalizing about particular ethnic groups and cultural groups, as a result of being exposed during training to information about culture; that is very dangerous in itself. Educators also focus mostly on general characteristics of a group instead in a single individual, and this is wrong because each individual is unique and should not be generalized by culture (Le Roux 46).
In Admiraal et al. (2016)’s article, four teachers participated in the study and they reported that through conducting their research, they were able to take diverse perspectives on teaching, think of alternative solutions to address the issues, thoroughly reflect on their teaching and their colleagues’ teaching (Admiraal et al., 2016). By researching and reading the literature that is relevant to their topics, these teachers mentioned that they use the findings of the educational research to inform and shape their practices by analysing and translating the research findings to pedagogical practice, and assess the effectiveness of new ways of teaching (Admiraal et al., 2016). Furthermore, Admiraal et al. (2016) proposed suggestions to close the gap between educational research and teachers’ pedagogical practice by offering more opportunities for collaborations between researchers and practitioners, and encouraging teachers to embark academic
There will be one semi-instructed interview a week asking about specific situation in the classroom. During the interviews snacks and drinks will be provided for the students to enable them to feel more comfortable in the coming days. The purpose of this study is to see if there is a significant impact of African American teachers on female African American students academic achievement. The participants test scores will be recorded on a laptop. The notes from the interviews and observations in the classroom will be kept in separate notebooks. At the beginning of the research, the teachers will be asked how their teaching style differs from the normative teaching module. Also the participants will be given notebooks to record their own feelings about school and life in. Every two months the material will be collected and recorded in a laptop. Every four months the 11-15 year old participants will be given a 15-dollar gift card to the mall as an incentive to keep them interested and active in the study. After each recording, there will be member-checking and the and all three researchers will combine notes to ensure what is being recorded is actually purposeful to the intended
The use of research in the field of sociology has led to many breakthroughs in us as humans understanding both ourselves and our culture around us. As we as society continue working to develop a better understanding of how and why we act and interact with our surroundings we need to continue completing research to answer these questions. Research in sociology has created a better understanding of society and will continue to provide clues into the human mind. However, research must be completed properly and ethically along with proper research methods. Without proper procedures of completing research we as society may receive wrong information or biased answers about questions we want answered. There are four types of research that sociology uses to give us answers about our society and careful consideration must be taken to follow the rules of these research types.
For the purpose of this interview the students will be known as G.S. or group of students, the novice teacher will be known as N.T. and the veteran teacher will be known as V.T. All three participants were asked the exact same questions but the teachers were asked a few more questions as they related to their classrooms.
Prior to the conduction of this study, the researcher sought the approval of the Institutional Review Board with the Protection of Human Subjects in research. The researcher completed re-certification with the Institutional Review Board training on May 29, 2014 (See Appendix C). The researcher provided IRB with information such as research protocol, interview protocol, Demographic Questionnaire, researcher’s background information, consent form, and investigator’s assurance. Upon IRB approval, the research contacted the contacted the Superintendent of each school district for their permission to conduct the study in their districts. Next the principals of the schools were contacted for their permission to interview teachers in their building. At this point, the research was able to contact the participants for an interview. The Principals, after permission was given for the study, were asked to provide the participants e-mail addresses and phone numbers.
To account for this, I will make sure that all field-specific terms are used correctly, but also easy to understand for those unfamiliar with it’s jargon. I believe that my research could be beneficial for those contemplating going into teaching as a career, as it will likely illuminate both positive and negative aspects of the job that they will need to consider. It may also provide insight that could help schools better communicate with their teachers to ensure that they are happy in their positions and can perform to the best of their
Researches have found that teachers are being bias towards African American students as young as preschoolers. There has been many studies that investigated this situation. It has been said that teachers watch the behaviors of students, but watch some students more closely. It is quite unfortunate, but is a real problem in today’s society.
On the days that i was observing, 3 children Sam and Tom were playing with the number blocks and they were just talking about what type of bed they sleep in, and Sam said that he sleeps on a big bed and Tom was telling him no you sleep on a baby bed because you are younger. So they started to argue about it then a teacher step in just to check in with them. She gave them space to tell their story and guide to resolve the problem. Sam and Tom talked about it, after that they start playing with each other again. The role of the teachers is important in the classroom, despite the fact that they are there to “teach”, but instead of being teachers they act as a guide to help their students to increase their developmental skills. The teachers would participate during dramatic play or other activities in order to engage conversation and help them develop the social skill with peers and
The topic that I have chosen to look at is obesity. The aim of this topic is to find out whether “the ignorance of genetics as a contra factor of obesity”. I have chosen to look at this topic because obesity is concerns me. Obesity has always been a bid debate for a long time now and I was intrigued to find out more about the topic and the cause of obesity. The fact that obesity has made deadlines news in recent years. There are a lot of misconceptions about obesity such as overweight is caused by a sow metabolism. There have been a lot of beliefs and myths about obesity in society today and he above myths is on of them. According to Donnellan (1998) ‘ ‘people who are overweight have told their doctors that they eat no more and
Sociologists use many different designs and methods to study society and social behavior. Most sociological research involves ethnography, or “field work” designed to depict the characteristics of a population as fully as possible.
METHOD The study is descriptive, qualitative research on teachers as they attempted to meet new standards. Specifically it is a case study of an elementary school faculty, done in an attempt to
