Students at June Jordan High School were caught up in a shooting at the end of class on Tuesday. Sophomore Devianna Lucero reported that she thought it was just someone baging on the walls, until students were screaming and running to the classrooms. The next day, students came hand-in-hand, and signs stating that “All Lives Matter.” Policies believe there are 4 suspects, and one female student, who was shot, was targeted. In total, 4 students were shot, 3 sent out of the hospital, and one still healing. Shooting occurred almost every day, so students had to go through lockdowns often and counselors must upgrade their school’s security. This article reminded me of one of the most severe school shootings, the shooting of Sandy Hook Elementary.
A shooting Monotory High School scares us all. With a sad 3 dead and 12 wounded students Monotory High is under investigation on why the shooter did what he did. The families of the high schoolers that were shot and killed have been notified and are not taking it well. Two of the three parents are concerned for the students that were at the high school with them because they don't want the other parents to go through what they had. The three high schoolers that were shot dead are Rose White, Joanne Green, and Eddie Davidson. Rose and Joanne have been 15 years old and only a sophomore. Eddie was 16 and a Junior. "Eddie, Rose and Joanne were best friends since 5th grade" we were told by the parents of the three. They said that they were all very
This shooting was the worst in United States history, and it left families speechless and people in disarray. Two teens committed the treacherous actions of that day. The speculations were that they did this because of bullying, goth culture, or music or video games; these though were all just theories and were never proven(history). After this event, schools, venues, and events have endured grand security increases in the danger of shooters or other violence. Throughout my school days, I have wondered why we do the silly lock down drills at school, but in reality, lives could be saved in the event of an actual attack on my school. I realized this my eight grade year at Guntown Middle School. There was an unidentified man on campus, a code red lock down would amerce. I still remember sitting under my desk, shaking, and almost to tears. I did not want to be remembered as just another statistic if it was a shooter. But it had been our lucky day, the man who had stirred up all the commotion was just looking for the school’s office. Those fears I experienced however, would stay with me. We all believe that we are invincible and that it would never be us. However, with the world as it is today, no one is safe. I have been affected by the Columbine shooting through security changes in schools that I
October 2006 marked the date of the tragic school shooting of ten young amish schoolgirls. However, this tragic shooting, was just the beginning. In the midst of the grieving community, forgiveness became evident. The Amish community did not show anger but rather they showed grace and compassion towards the killers family. The abundant grace that was shown was overwhelming. Through the deaths of several schoolgirls we are shown the amazing power of forgiveness and Gods grace. “The afternoon of the shooting an Amish grandfather of one of the girls who was killed expressed forgiveness toward the killer, Charles Roberts. That same day Amish neighbors visited the Roberts family to comfort them in their sorrow and pain.” (LancasterPA) And later
CHARLESTON, North Carolina – What was supposedly a solemn bible study and prayer meeting, turned out to be a shooting fiasco when a young man started to pull the trigger, killing nine people.
Do you think that the parents of the children that start school shootings be charged? Do you think that they deserve to be punished for what their kids have done? Do you think that the parents should be hurt for something that their kids have done that they may or may not have known what the kids were doing? Lack of funding and resources, many discipline problems arise when students are disengaged and do not have support services to help them persist in their educational pursuits. Lack of textbooks, inexperienced teachers, and non-existent counseling and special education services all contribute to delinquency and high dropout rates. Alternative school environments,In some public school districts, children that have been disciplined are remanded
School shootings are a tragedy, it’s just about impossible to say it’s not. Children are one of our most valuable resources as they are the future of this country and this world and we put so much time and energy into them it would make sense to keep them safe. The thing I don’t understand is why we protect our president with guns, our congressmen with guns, celebrities with guns, sporting events with guns, jewelry stores with guns, and yet we protect our kids with a gun free zone sign. And then when there is an emergency we call someone with a gun to solve the issue. What scares me and I think everyone needs to be aware of is that according to School Guard, a company that is specializing in technology to help reduce response time to school
In the wake of two recent shootings, one that left 17 dead in a Florida high school and shooting at Central Michigan that killed two,the debate over gun control is once again at the forefront of our country. When I flash back to the deadly Valentine's Day shooting, I think about my immediate reaction after watching the live coverage for an hour.
Professor Amy Johnson was in a meeting of Clergywomen when she received an alert from her daughter's school is in locked down, due to a gun violence threat. Since the early 1970s school shootings at elementary, secondary and higher education institutions have been a traumatic reality for American society. Everyday threat sends some school into lockdown because of which students get scared even those turn out to be false alarms. Because of this, All schools are conducting drills in which students hide under their seats or other safe areas from the imaginary shooter. In less than four months into 2018, there have been 16 shootings in America. At least 130 students, staff and family members buried. The school shooting is now the global issue. More than 187,000 students have been exposed to gun violence at a school since Columbine. Developed countries like America, Pakistan, Finland, and Canada are also under the influence of this matter. The causes behind this massacre are multiple like the mental illness of a child, parenting issue, financial crisis, revenge, intolerance, anger, frustration or maybe more. School shootings are not solely a problem for the United States, both comparative and international approaches have been used to understand this global problem.
across the nation . These threats from juveniles are not a new, but seem to be an all too common
On February 15, 2018, a student opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, killing at least 17 people and injuring many more at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. According to the article, the shooter was 19 years old at the time of the event and was a former student of the school. It was the deadliest school shooting in the nation since a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Frantic parents rushed to the scene and ambulances converged in front of the school. This was certainly a very devastating event for the school, the community, and the great nation of the United States
There seems to be many controversial issues going on in the world today, particularly in the United States. Many of these issues going on right now cause division and heated debates in our country. One of the biggest and most talked about issues in America at the moment has to be whether or not if we should give teachers guns. A lot of people seem to be really divided and passionate about this topic. The fact that this issue is so relevant and talked about is what encouraged to me want to know more about it and eventually write about it. For me there is only one right answer to the topic of arming our teachers or not. We should not provide our teachers with guns as it will only increase the amount of danger in our schools, also it would be
On February 14th 2018 a horrific shooting took place in Parkland Florida. Many people were killed and many more injured. After this attack there was loud outcry from younger people for change. Many called for new gun laws and many marched on the capitol to protest what they saw as inaction. These protests were the biggest youth protest since Vietnam and show that these kids aren’t going to back down. “WE will get rid of these public servants who only care about the gun lobby” said one student, this action and similar statements by these kids show that they want change, but how will the change they want happen and will it happen soon?
Unfortunately, the notion of schools being a safe place is no longer a trend across American schools. Disturbing mass shootings in the U.S continue to shock the media. A school shooting is when someone attacks a school using a gun. The Secret Service says these shootings are "deliberately selected as the location for the attack". The reasons massacres occur in schools is because of poor security, violence in video games/media, and bullying. Shockingly the U.S. has the most school shootings than any other country in the world. According to the FBI, mass shootings occur, on average, every 2 weeks in the U.S. While the cause of school shootings are sometimes unpredictable, it is a growing issue and they need to be prevented. Most shooters don’t have mental issues, they have a plan to kill, so there is no singular cause that creates violent people. On April 16th, 2007, the most deadly school massacre occurred. Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two students at Virginia-Tech. As Americans, we no longer should turn on the news and witness these gruesome murders. We try to make sense of these murders, but it’s ineffectual. There are measures we can take as a society to help. The number one question in a school massacre is, "why would a person that has a capable sense of mind even do that?” It is our moral responsibility to fix these issues. In order to stop this problem, we need to find its roots.
Over the past couple of decades, school shooting have seemed to occur often-- continuously shocking the nation and reminding everyone that no community is exempt from such horror. One main contributor of this hysteria is found within the media. At the catalyst of this hysteria, lies the horrific Columbine shooting in 1999. Since then, school shootings have received ample coverage-- some argue that this has romanticized school shootings, others argue that is has provided condemning coverage of the often insane perpetrators. In the first year after the Columbine shooting, over 10,000 articles were written about the event, likely setting the stage for the nationwide desire for constant coverage of such events (Elsass et al, p. 445-446).
In Littleton, Colorado, April 20, 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed thirteen people and wounded more than 20 people at Columbine High School (History.com 1). This act of violence affected many people directly. The families, friends, classmates, and school faculty were directly affected by it because they personally knew the victims and the shooters. This massacre is still an important event to remember to this day. Many people can learn from what happened and the causes for this act. Schools in the United States have also been greatly affected by it by enforcing school to not tolerate disruptive behavior and bullying (4). Because of the Columbine shooting, there have been quite a few changes with schools and security (Criminal Justice Degrees Guide 1). Since the massacre, security at schools has heightened to the point where schools have installed metal detectors and security cameras (1). Here at De Queen High School, like in many other schools, have installed security cameras and have hired cops to patrol around the school in order to attempt to keep the school as safe as possible. The shooting at Columbine High School has by far been one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history that have made a great impact on many others.
