American culture has been referred to as a “melting pot.” Different cultures have added their own distinct aspects to society, making America a diverse country. Despite the plethora of cultures, certain norms, mores, and folkways are evident in American society. These ideas are vital to the function and stability of America. They provide guidelines for what is acceptable and not. In virtually every society, there are people who engage in deviant behavior and do not abide by the values that the rest of society follows. Theorists have debated if people are socialized into acting this way and if it is a social or personal problem. The sociological study of culture focuses on norms, mores, and folkways.

The United States is an immense country, with many residents and citizens descending from immigrants who have influenced many customs, traditions, behaviors and ways of life. Unlike many old world nations, the United States does not have a homogenous population or a traditional homeland. However, American culture can be interpreted as being largely based in Western Europe with influences from the Native Indians, Africans, Asians, and elsewhere.

To begin with, Pollan describes that there isn’t a real “American” food culture. He says “We have never had a national food culture in the United States. There’s really no such thing as “American food.” (Fast-food hamburgers don’t count.)” (92) Because of that, we have little guide lines and traditions.

While many Americans may not really think about their native culture, it does exist (as the “mom and apple pie” stereotype demonstrates.) Like most world cultures, it arose from myriad factors, not the least of which is its immigrant history. Many of the foods and customs that we take for granted as part of the American tradition actually got their start elsewhere. Here’s a look at four different ways immigrants have influenced American culture.

Culture is defined as the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time (merriam-webster.com). America may be considered a “melting pot”, because it has been influenced by many different cultures. This blending of subcultures to create an extremely diverse culture makes America unique to the rest of the world. In Ishmael Reed’s article, “America: The Multinational Society” he argues America is not a single group of people, but many subcultures combined together; Atheism and competitive gaming are but two particular examples of the various subcultures that populate America.

The roots of modern American culture lie in many places far removed from one another. Before the colonization of the United States, the country was inhabited by Native Americans. Europeans cut in, occupied the land, and began overriding the native traditions with their power and greed. This is the true American culture—usually seen as nothing more than a ghost of the past. Nowadays, it has been through years and years of transform.

Is the American society perfect? Well, there are three main problems that come to mind when thought of by most. The three problems that come to mind are the apathetic feeling towards education by children, a household that only has one parent, and people who abuse alcohol or drugs. The reason why they're are the most problematic situations in American society is because they cause the newer generations into becoming criminals or uncivil later in their life. The three of the problems mention before correlate to one another; if a person got started abusing alcohol or drugs, the consequence would lead to criminal charges. The reason why they might have done what they did is due to the fact they might not have a mother or father figure to help them do right. Little problems such as drug or alcohol abuse can significantly change the a person's view towards the society.

Last semester I started the sport Cross Country probably the worst sport ever not kidding. My first race I got lost and basically got last and almost passed out. It was 90 degrees and we were running around Valley high school. It was a very boring course to be honest, Plus I didn’t feel good that day, and on top of that it was on a day where we didn’t have school, so three reasons why that was the worst meet ever.
