Have you ever been watching tv and the ASPCA commercial comes on, you know the one that has the song “Arms of an Angle.” The commercial makes you feel super sad for the poor animals that have been abused and victimized because of cruel behavior. They ask you to donate money to help these animals recover. What if when these animals do recover they were turned into Service animals. This is a matter of great concern in our community because we could help get most, if not all the animals adopted into a loving home. In order to understand the issue more completely, I looked at turning shelter animals into service animals. Have you ever seen the ASPCA commercials where they show pictures of abused and neglected animals while the Sarah McLachlan song “In the Arms of an Angel” plays in the background? It is heart wrenching to watch and I always want to help those poor, defenseless animals. I took this opportunity to volunteer at the Town and Country Animal Shelter; a non-profit, no-kill shelter run entirely by volunteers serving eastern Nebraska and beyond. They are dedicated to providing a safe and caring living facility for pets in need until a loving home can be found, as well as helpful information for those wishing to rehome or adopt an animal. I chose this organization because they are a no kill shelter and they take in animals of all different sorts.

How does it make you feel that all those animals are going to starve without food? Pretty bad I would hope or that would make you a psychopath. Dozens of animals will starve at this local shelter if we do not make enough money or collect enough dog food. All we need is a donation of your time or your pocket to help these poor animals. You might be questioning “Why don’t you just set them loose in the wild?” because this would increase the percentage of mangy dogs and feral animals running around the town after that they would go to natural instinct and pack up and attack people, toddlers, house pets, livestock and our goal at this animal shelter is to save the dogs and animals out there left for the wild to eat them alive or to get hit by a truck barreling down the freeway.

To be more specific, animals get abused or abandoned every 10 seconds which shouldn't be happening. Overall about 7.6 million animals go into shelters nationwide and out of those only 3-4 million of them get adopted every year. Not only do 2.7 million dogs and cats get killed every year because the shelters get too full and there aren’t enough homes to adopt them but in high kill shelters animals get killed if they aren't adopted in a certain amount of time. Around easter time people buy chicks and rabbits, and often abandon them, not realizing they still need care and they also will dye these animals different colors thinking it will do them no harm but in reality it does. That is why in some states that is illegal. Abandoning animals in many states is a crime. 1 out of every 10 dogs get a home they will always live in which means that most dogs do not get a home that they will always live in and less than 20% of cats and 15-20% of dogs get reunited with their owner after they are lost. Homeless animals outnumber humans 5-1 which are a lot. One way to help animals is by adopting abused or abandoned animals. People can also donate to charities that help abandoned animals. Many animals go to shelters because they get left behind by their owners or they were found on the streets. Most pets that are stray were kept indoors. Many animals are rescued and taken to shelters all around the United States. These shelters provide all the resources and take care of the animals until they are well or adopted. The world and its people are not the only things that need assistance. We must not forget about the animals.Because animals cannot speak their concerns, we have to be their voice. There are animals roaming around homeless with no food or water and most of them have been abused. Animal lovers including myself, wont let this continue. Yes, there are many charities that have contributed to making animal abuse and neglect stop, but this issue hasn't been fully ceased yet. The ASPCA was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world to stop animal abuse and/or neglect. It was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. This organization is a no kill for space shelter. When most people think about Animal Control shelters, it usually negative. Animal control shelters get an unjust reputation of just being a place where unwanted, problem dogs go to be euthanized. I mean, you call the your local animal control office when you see a stray dog hanging around the neighborhood, right? They show up in a van or truck driven by a uniformed officer who carries a scary looking pole with a loop on it to catch animals. Well, there’s more to your local animal control shelter than just catching stray dogs and cats.

Every year animals are being mistreated, getting abused, and being left alone to die. When someone volunteers to help out he or she could save an animal's life. The shelter is not funded very much from the government to maintain their stability. They are having a tough time holding down the business, paying all employees, and housing and feeding every animal that walks through that door. That is why the staff is pleased with generous volunteers. On their website it states "However, TLHS primarily relies on funding from donations and fundraisers to help house, feed and care for the 6,000 animals per year who enter our facility" (About TLHS). Business hours at the shelter are anywhere from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Tuesday's - Saturday's. If one decides to volunteer he or she has to be 16 years and younger with a parent or guardian's nearby, or he or she can be 17 years and older with no more than a parent or guardian's signature. Tasks at the shelter include: walking the dogs, interacting with the cats, cleaning their beds and laying out fresh newspaper, and as well as washing their food bowls/dishes. Also 'Save a Pet. Spenser a Pet. Name a Pet' is a great way to care for an animal if transportation to the shelter is out of the question. All someone would have to do is donate $75.00 for a dog or $45.00 for a cat; when doing so he or she will receive the honor to name the pet they sponsored. The money that person donated covers the shots that the animal will need and spaying/neutering the animal. I use to volunteer at the Humane Society, but since my schedule got busy I don’t have the time like I use to before to go and help. However, this number can be significantly reduced if we start to make a change. With my speech, I would like to persuade you to from now on look for pets in a shelter instead of a pet store. In order to do this, I will provide information about the differences between shelters and pet stores, reasons to adopt a pet, and how to do it.

Choosing to buy an animal from an animal shelter is less expensive, and will save an individual more money than purchasing a dog or cat from a pet store. Sometimes these reasons can be the animal is an inconvenience to care for anymore, a sudden death of the animal’s owner, or loss of a pet friendly home. A shelter is a place that takes in animals that no one wants anymore. Some shelters are no kill and some shelters are not. No kill shelters will try and help animals find a new home through an adoption. Kill shelters give a short amount of time for the owners to find their lost pets. Pets are a part of a family, they are not property. We need to prevent abandonment through awareness. Things like foster programs can help a pet temporarily until they can find a permanent home. This is cost effective and better for the animal.

There are many problems with abandoning an animal, in some states it is even a crime. Some abandoned animals get sent to testing facilities, to which they will be scarred even further. Animals of all species can be subject to abuse and abandonment, and over 6,000,000 animals are abandoned each year in the United States of America (Aldf). Another problem with abandoning an animal is that it can become feral, to which a person or child could walk by and get attacked. Any time a person goes to a shelter and sees a dog or even a kitten, and thinks, “I wish I could”, they need to think financially, and then they need to think about the animals needs. If a person knows that they cannot take care of a pet but have enough to help, they should. However, if people see a commercial for animal abandonment, they are more likely to call and make a donation rather than going to the local shelter to make a donation.
