Breathe in the music, and out the performance” is something that freshman Regan Hoyt tells herself before every performance. Color guard has been a sport of the arts that has evolved from primarily a military activity, to a world wide sport.
“Whenever I am performing, It makes me feel like I am doing something productive with my time and I am doing something I actually enjoy” Hoyt said.
With over twenty five colleges throughout the United States that provide color guard scholarships, Hoyt is already planning for her future.
“After high school I want to pursue color guard in college and hopefully get a scholarship. And with enough training, I will become a professional in a DCI” (Drum Corps International) Hoyt said.
The purpose of color guard is to interpret the music that the marching band is playing while they perform a synchronized display of flags, sabres, rifles, all with a dance background.

Color guard has two seasons, Field season and Winter Guard season. On Monday May 16th, 5 girls from our very own Chino Hills High School color guard came into the Journalism room to be interviewed about their past season this school year. The five girls that came into our room were Kaitlyn Parsons, Mallory Williams, Ashley Kearns, Nina Penzo, and Hunter Adams. They placed first in the Western Open Class Champions and the Westcoast Winterguard Open Class Champions. They each told us that the World Championships take place in Dayton, Ohio which is considered to be the color guard hub of the United States of America. Hunter Adams told the journalism crew that they practiced about 16 hours a week with a competition on Saturdays. Nina Penzo is a captain as well as Jenna Quijano who is a senior captain. They
The flag waves majestically in the wind above me, or, that’s what I’ve been told it would be doing if the flagless practice pole in my hand was actually a color guard flag. Learning color guard is boring and, I couldn’t care less about marching slowly with the American flag. And, the dumb egoistic guy who demands we scream, “aye, P.O,” after everything he says, is not improving my mood. I want to be inside shooting an air rifle, but instead I’m loathing color guard. It is the millionth time I have gotten stuck with a task I didn’t want to do since I joined my Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) unit, and, quite frankly, I’m worn out.

Why is the color bar so important in the salon? One of the many reasons why it’s so important is because color is a hair treatment that continually brings people into the salon. you’ll will see a guest two more times a year than someone that comes into get just a haircut. The color bar helps make loyal costumers daily. Every costumer that comes in to get their hair colored have to make appointments after their first hair color to make sure they keep the color refreshed and get root touchups. Hair color is one of the more expensive treatments that people get done with their hair . Color sales are in the billions. Having a good color system and good stylists that are good at color not only make more money for the stylist but also brings in
Honor guard is honored in a full and rich tradition and history. The organization was first erected in September 1948 with the strength of 98 enlisted members and two officers. They were all a part of the air police squadron and were tasked to provide a ceremonial detachment to perform
The uniform provides protection for the wearer. It is a type of camouflage because of the pattern to protect the wearer from being seen. It tells you s/he is a member of the US Army and its well trained in all aspects.
What is color guard? Color guard is a true test to physical strength and ability and it’s where I spend every waking hour trying to improve each toss, turn, and count. Color guard is where two, almost three dozen girls spend most of our free time practicing something that will not get us a job. It won’t pay us in anything but joy. And as cliché as that sounds, it’s true. Color guard will probably never give us more than thousands upon millions of life lessons. Yet, we all still do it because we love it. Color guard is striving to be the best you can be. It’s socializing with some people you can’t stand half the time because somehow they became like family and mean more than the world to you. It’s sacrificing so many Fridays to do what you love.
But Color Guard is in no sense easy; it is tricky for the Color Guard to handle their props. Junior and captain Abby Stritzinger knows first hand the difficulties with props.
When I was 11, I saw my sister walk across the stage in the Go-Hawk Gymnasium. I remembered the tassels she wore, and how only some of graduates had them on. At the time, I didn't know what they meant or how to achieve them, but I knew that was a goal I wanted to strive for. Looking back at my life as a Go-Hawk, my leadership, my volunteer work, and my success in the classroom has culminated to the opportunity to be apart of something that I only dreamed of growing up.
The first time I auditioned for the Elizabeth High School Color Guard, I would never have imagined it to play such a crucial role in my life. I have participated on this artistic and athletic manner for three years and it has been one of the preeminent decisions I have ever made in my life. For those who may not fully understand what color guard really is, it is a time intensive sport. Yes, a sport. Try jazz running across the football field for nine minutes while dancing and spinning a six-foot flag or a 36-inch rifle. Not only is your body physically pushed to the limits, but you need to have high levels of mental coordination. Nonetheless, color guard has shaped my character and without it, my life would not be half as phenomenal as it is today. Because of the laughs I had, the people I met, the confidence I gained, I am the person I am today.
My life would be incomplete without performing music. I’ve spent time, in concert bands, in bell choirs, in school and church choirs, and singing, playing in music festivals, and in pit bands trying not to laugh my head off at the actors’ improvisations. But the art that truly speaks to my soul does not lie in creating music, it lies in dancing to it.
“Roll those feet! Keep those toes high! Square your shoulders! Keep the tempo moving!” This can be heard by directors, in most marching band rehearsals, as the band is racing around the field while playing mentally demanding music. Competitive marching band, the highlight of some high schoolers’ fall season, is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a group of musicians who play instruments while marching together at a parade or sports event” (“Marching Band”). In comparison a sport is defined as “a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other” (“Sports”). High school competition band is where a band practices from July to November to prepare one show to be
The Colored Junior College was established to provide an opportunity for African-Americans to receive college training. The Junior College progressed so fast that by 1931, it became a member of the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and was approved by the Southern Association of Colleges. In the summer of 1934, the Houston School Board changed the junior college to a four-year college and the name to Houston College for Negroes. When the university opened its doors in September 1947, it had 2,300 students, two schools, one division and one college - the Law School, the Pharmacy School, the Vocational Division, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Responding to the changing times, in 1973, the 63rd Legislature designated Texas Southern University as a special purpose institution for urban programming. As a result, four more academic units were added - the College of Education, the School of Public Affairs, the School of Communications and the Weekend College.
Despite the daunting challenge of being in charge of sixty teenage girls, one of the extremely humbling parts of being a Captain of the Eagle Pride Color Guard is the ability to show girls that regardless of their background they can reach their full potential. As I transitioned from my freshman year on Color Guard into my veteran years, I began to realize that I was among a group of girls that had experienced obstacles and had found ways to overcome them. During my second year on guard everything began to come into focus: I observed girls who were struggling with the experience of learning a new skill the way I had the year before. Every year from then on, when I began teaching a new concept to a rookie, such as tossing a flag, I reiterated
Sophomore year of marching came. This year was a surprise for everyone. With our show being named ‘Masterminder.’ The band members marching were under control by the color guard soloist; the puppeteer. This show was pretty exciting, too. The judges also thought that. We made it past regionals AND semi-state. What? Yeah, we all thought the same thing. We had made it. We had FINALLY made it after so many years of just trying to get past regionals for once. It was a bitter-sweet feeling waiting for placement awards at Lucas Oil Stadium. The instructors went around to each band student one by one. The congratulated us on an amazing season. I started tearing up, but that isn’t surprising. As we marched our way out of Lucas Oil Stadium that night, I knew that this was only the beginning of a new generation for the Marching Marksmen.
