Sports injuries and medical advances
On the websites and article I researched Concussions and other sports injuries and how they have affected the medical field and made that field stronger. In the first article I found it talked mainly about concussions and about how they are always a bad thing when an athlete gets one but in the medical field each time an athlete has gotten one it has led to major advances in the medical field of concussions. Advances in sports medicine has come a long way within half a century, it has gone from coaches only being able to ask “How many fingers am I holding up”, to EMTs being able to diagnose a concussion on the spot and being able to treat it. Not only has our knowledge of being able to diagnose concussions has gone up but also our knowledge of what to do when

We once thought that when you have one you needed to stay away from bright lights, computers and other electronics, and also believed that if you had a previous concussion that you were more apt to get another than someone else that had never had one. Trump was planning on changing how sports looked from a medical stand point. Now that doesn’t mean he is talking about eliminating certain ways of playing sports or certain rules, but he did talk about wanting to cut down on the amount of injuries that players sustain. As a former player he knows injuries are all over especially in high contact sports like football or even extreme sports. He has been said to recently “hammer: the NFL on their little effort to reduce brain injuries and other types of injuries in the last 10 years, however that is all just speculation due to the fact that it isn’t confirmed yet. This basically shows that athletes are not the only people worried about injuries and certainly not the only ones trying to prevent them from
Disease such as ALS and CTE can devastate an athlete’s career and their life. Although these disease affect the body differently, they are both degenerative diseases that destroy whichever body part they affect with time. Although leagues recognize the harm of concussions, they fail to take liability of the side effects after. Despite making millions off of players and their athleticism, leagues also fail to own up to lawsuits regarding that their sport is dangerous and can lead to greater susceptibility to diseases. Many athletes play sports because it is their passion, however it is not justified that their leagues fail to take care of them after they suffer the consequences of concussions and head trauma.
This article has to do with concussions in sports. This article also talks about what exactly is the brain and how it is affected during and after a hit to the head. It also talks about the symptoms of a concussion, loss of consciousness, dizziness, headaches etc. This article also talks about various types of concussions and what happens with repeated concussions (Second Impact Syndrome and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). I selected this topic Health and Wellness, Concussion in Athletes because I am a Commissioner in Youth Sports and I educate coaches and athletes how to protect and prevention concussion in football and baseball. This topic was something that I can relate to and I believes that I could do a good research paper on this topic. After spending eight weeks researching this paper it has help me to gain more information that I can use in my next coaching section for 2017 football and baseball season.
How would you feel if your son were to have a concussion after playing football? Would you let him play again? Football is a well known sport for serious or fatal injuries. Professional football players that have been playing for decades sometimes are found with (CTE) chronic traumatic encephalopathy which is found after death. Knowing this I would not let my son play football because it causes concussions, promotes violence, and causes permanent brain damage which leads to death.

Football is one of the most beloved sports in the United States. It is one of the most violent bone crushing sports, leaving players permanently injured for life in some cases. The most common injury that football players suffer from pee-wee through the NFL is the concussion. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that changes the way your brain works. The effects of a concussion are usually temporary and can result in a full recovery if its minor and treated correctly. A concussion can lead to brain problems later in life, even after a player has finished playing football. This is why people are studying and trying to understand concussions fully in order to prevent and treat future ones. Concussions are very
Spotting any of the symptoms above, is one of the quickest and effective ways for a concussion to be diagnosed by a person trained to spot these symptoms. Although many of these symptoms, don’t appear or will not be present in an athlete that has sustained a concussion. New ways for diagnosing concussions, have been developed to better identify the injury, making it easier to diagnose and treat an athlete who has sustained a hit to the head or neck area. Many concussions, never have an athlete completely losing consciousness, many athletes experience a momentary state of confusion or disorientation after being hit in the head.("Bell Ringers" are concussions , 2016) This type of hit to the head is known as a “bell ringer”; these types of hits can prove to be even more dangerous and hazardous to an athlete, because they don’t lose consciousness many trainers, and coaches think that they are still able to play. This, however is not true, if an athlete were to sustain another concussion, then their chances of getting a more severe injury is dramatically increased.
In the sports world today, there are many different injuries that athletes experience and one of the most devastating injury is a concussion. Concussions can happen to anyone, in any sport, but we tend to see most concussions in contact sports (Świerzewski 1). While having an informal conversation with my dad about football, he told me it was common for athletes to receive a head injury in a game and continue to play as if nothing was wrong. While watching SportsCenter, I found that some of the greatest retired athletes don’t remember the best moments of their careers due to the lack of treatment. The worst aspect of concussions is that the symptoms can be delayed; in some cases, it’s only a headache so athletes don’t seek medical treatment. Multiple concussions over time can lead to life-threatening complications due to the damage they cause to the brain. Concussions can happen to anybody at anytime, but there is more to concussions than meets the eye.
This experiment is a descriptive research study that was used to see the amount of knowledge and amount of education college coaches have been given on the topic of Concussions. To see if coaches know the signs and symptoms of a concussion, how to identify if an athlete has concussion symptoms and if the coaches know the recovery protocol for an athlete to return to play. For this experiment, 28,183 coaches of division l, ll, and lll, colleges all over the country were sent an email asking to participate in this study to see how much knowledge and education they have on concussions. This lead to some limitations because they can only do the study on the coaches that choose to participate. But of those 28183 asked, 1818 coaches responded
Concussions In Sports Head injuries have been in the news lately because of the many side effects and the dangers they can have on a person's mental health. The most common head injury today is a concussion. A concussion happens when a person has a traumatic blow to the head causing the brain to whiplash against a person’s skull. This is such a big issue because there is so much unknown about everything. For example, many famous football players that have died have been diagnosed with a disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy such as Frank Gifford, Mike Webster, and Dave Duerson.
Athletes in the 21st century are pushing themselves and their teammates to their limit, to try and be the best they can. Whether that is in a game situation, weight room, or practicing on the field, pool, or gym, accidents happen and can happen anywhere. It doesn’t matter if you are a guy or a girl, this accident happens to many athletes in a variety of sports. This sports injury is a concussion and it truly does affect any kind of athlete in any kind of sport. Concussions aren’t acquired in every sport, but they can happen. In the last few years concussions have become a growing problem for athletes from high school to professional athletes. Are concussions as bad as doctors and the news are making them out to be?
Athletes around the world come together every day to compete and with competition comes injuries. Athletic trainers are typically the first responders to assist the athletes and provide diagnoses and treatment. Although injuries are always going to happen the main responsibility of an athletic trainer is to prevent them from happening. There are a wide range of possible injuries in which an athlete can get into, concussions are one of the most common types of injuries during sporting activities. As a matter of fact, concussions occur at a rate of 1.6 to 3.8 million per year during sporting activities (Broglio). However, these figures fall short as there are many concussion injuries, which are unreported by either athletes or coaches and often
When I think of Brain related injuries in sports my mind automatically gravitates towards football. As for most Americans that's the case the hard-hitting contact sport is a household name the NFL (National football league). In actuality concussions are very common in every sport such as MLB, NBA, NHL, Boxing, UFC and the lost goes on. Unfortunately up until recently most sports did not see the negative long-term side effects that concussions can leave on the human brain. One of the more recent things that has spiked tremendous interest in concussions is seeing the long term affects itcan leave on the
A recent study of college football players has shown that those who participate in high contact sports and have had a concussion before have a 300% higher chance of having another one in comparison to athletes that have never had a concussion before (Jolicoeur et al, 2007). The NFL and NCAA have enacted several rule changes in order to minimize the occurrence of concussions. These new rules, like many before them, have come under the scrutiny of the very athletes that they were meant to protect. The NHL and NHL Players Association in 1997 together created a program in order to get a better understanding of concussions and how to prevent them (Burke et al, 2011). According to Covassin (2008), athletes who have had more than one concussion take a longer time to recover with each concussion that they suffer from.
During this crisis, coaches and trainers have improved the process of medical attention and evaluation involving concussions. In the past, concussions were merely ignored and players and athletes were told to “play through the pain”. This was the case before people really knew the physical and mental trauma induced by a concussion. Medical attention
