Deepwater Horizon Imagine working on a oil rig. Just another day, everything is going fine. Right? Later on, you try to get ready to go to sleep and stuff, and then..BOOM. The rig has just exploded. What would you do to survive? Deepwater Horizon was an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that exploded, leaving eleven dead and seventeen injured. The eleven people’s bodies were never found. These eleven people were platform workers. Imagine that. Deepwater Horizon exploded because the workers had a plan that they thought would work, but it was very, very flawed. It was named the Oil Spill of 2010 because it was such a big spill. It had at least three massive explosions. They said that Deepwater Horizon was actually was one of the largest marine oil spills in U.S. history. You probably know that people died, obviously. But did you know that a lot of animals died also? Actually, six months after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, over 8,000 animals were reported dead. They found animals such as sea turtles, birds, plants, fish, and much more. They actually got oil stuck on their fur, it’s a lot harder for them to move. A lot of things were happening during the explosion. People were freaking out and trying to get a hold of the Coast Guard to help them. There were a lot of people called to clean up the oil, also. Over thirty-thousand responders were called to help get the oil out of the water. Responders were also called to help get everyone off of the rig. These responders came from Just imagine how much money this would cost. Because that rig costed a lot of money to make. Deepwater Horizon was worth $62 billion. That’s a lot of money.
