Deepwater Horizon Imagine working on a oil rig. Just another day, everything is going fine. Right? Later on, you try to get ready to go to sleep and stuff, and then..BOOM. The rig has just exploded. What would you do to survive? Deepwater Horizon was an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that exploded, leaving eleven dead and seventeen injured. The eleven people’s bodies were never found. These eleven people were platform workers. Imagine that. Deepwater Horizon exploded because the workers had a plan that they thought would work, but it was very, very flawed. (Obviously) The plan was to add cement to the casings. But, they did not add enough cement in between those casings. And you have to be pretty...precise about that kind of stuff, because …show more content…
It was named the Oil Spill of 2010 because it was such a big spill. It had at least three massive explosions. They said that Deepwater Horizon was actually was one of the largest marine oil spills in U.S. history. You probably know that people died, obviously. But did you know that a lot of animals died also? Actually, six months after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, over 8,000 animals were reported dead. They found animals such as sea turtles, birds, plants, fish, and much more. They actually got oil stuck on their fur, it’s a lot harder for them to move. A lot of things were happening during the explosion. People were freaking out and trying to get a hold of the Coast Guard to help them. There were a lot of people called to clean up the oil, also. Over thirty-thousand responders were called to help get the oil out of the water. Responders were also called to help get everyone off of the rig. These responders came from Just imagine how much money this would cost. Because that rig costed a lot of money to make. Deepwater Horizon was worth $62 billion. That’s a lot of money. And even the workers called to clean, get the workers, and even investigate this had to be

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico occurred because “oil from the well shot up and out of the drill column under high pressure, extended on the drilling rig and exploded (wikipedia)”. The rig set on fire and later sank. BP, Transocean, along with government agency employer, all worked hard to avoid further spread of the oil.
On April 20, 2010 there was an explosion in a drilling rig that was operated and owned by Transocean. The drilling rig’s official name was “Deepwater Horizon Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit” and was in the process of drilling oil in the Macondo Propect oil field, located 40 miles off the Louisiana southeast coast. The cause was reported as a “Wellhead blowout” which cause the rig to explode, dumping more than 200 gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and resulting in 11 casualties.
The Deepwater Horizon was a nine year old, ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible, offshore drilling rig built in South Korea. In 2008, British Petroleum (BP) leased it from Transocean to drill for oil in the Gulf Coast. In September 2009, the rig drilled the deepest oil well in history at a depth of 35,055-feet. On April 20, 2010 while drilling the rig exploded at 9:45PM (CST), killing eleven workers and injuring seventeen others. It was caused when methane gas from the well shot all the way up and out of the drill column, expanded onto the platform then ignited and exploded. The explosion then led the rig to burn, with the resulting fire unable to be extinguished 2 days later it sinked leaving
After a long debate with the mangers of the rig, it was determined that the rig had a malfunction and overdue for a lot of updates and maintenance, but BP representatives did not believe it, and pushed the rig to its limits. The rig operated normally for some time, at least that’s what the BP representative were thinking, but they were wrong. The rig could not handle the pressure and it busted. Due to the negligence the rig eventually blew up, spilling a lot of oil. “The oil spill, the worst in maritime history, dumped 4.2 million barrels of oil, and officials released 1.8 million gallons of Corexit, a chemical depressant used to break up the oil, into the Gulf before the well was sealed.”(Marsa, 2016, para.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster that took place in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 is the largest oil spill to have ever occurred in USA waters. As efforts to hold the current spill continues, the higher chances of clean up damage compensation technique, and also enhancing prevention of future oil spill responses and recovery. The rig was owned and under the operation of Transocean, a Switzerland-based offshore drilling firm, and leased to BP plc, one of the biggest oil firms in the world. The explosion and fire that led to eleven fatalities and several injuries took place despite specialized oil spill prevention equipment also known as a blowout preventer, which is designed to avert such a kind of disaster. The quantity
The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was an oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico was caused by a faulty blowout preventer this is part of the oil rig that was designed by the workers as an emergency shutdown valve. As a result of this anywhere from 1,000 barrels of oil to 5,000 barrels of oil were lost over the course of 100 days. A blowout preventer is a machine on the oil rig for safety to shut down the flow of oil coming out of the well at the bottom of the seafloor. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill caused a good number of environmental damage as well as killed wildlife and has taken the lives of 11 workers that day. The oil would eventually make it’s way to coastlines (shorelines) of Texas , Florida , Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill or the BP oil spill refers to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which flowed for three months in 2010. The spill was a result of the explosion of Deepwater Horizon, which drilled on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. The explosion killed 11 men working on the platform and injured 17 others (Summarized from Wikipedia article on: “Deepwater Horizon oil spill” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_oil_spill )
The Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico exploded on April 20th, 2010, pouring nearly 5 million barrels into the sea over a three months’ span. Endangering marine wildlife, as well as workers that were injured during the explosion. There were a 126 people on the rig, twenty-eight workers in total were hurt, leaving eleven that were fatally injured, while the other 17 were severely injured.
The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill occurred on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. This oil spill was the largest spill in history in front of the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989. This oil spill released about 4.9 million barrels of oil into the ocean. This spill not only wreck havoc on the marine life but also the economic players that depended on ocean such as fisherman, tourism, and offshore drilling located along the gulf coast. Along will the spill the oil rig which was named Deepwater Horizon also went up in flames. This proved that the issue went far beyond just an oil rig that blew a line. Since this oil spill had drastic impacts all along the coast, BP which was the most liable for this incident faced criminal charges based on what happened. BP which knew the risks of deep ocean drilling failed to take the necessary safety procedures to reduce the risks of such incident occurring, thus was the reasoning behind placing most of the fault on them and not the other companies. The lack of regulatory oversight led to the issues and cost-cutting procedures opened the rig up to possible malfunctions like the one that occurred. During the spill into the gulf, BP sealed the well with cement which seemed to stop a majority of the oil from escaping the well. BP also recognized that the well was “dead” which was proven wrong when scientists still could conclude was leaking minor amounts of oil into the ocean. This spill not only proved to be harmful to the environment but also
But now, they deliver Deepwater Horizon, which documents the horrors of what took place on the evening of April 20, 2010, more than 40 miles off of the Louisiana Coast, when a semi-submersible oil rig exploded into a ball of fire, resulting in the deaths of 11 crew members and causing the gravest environmental
In April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon was in very deep water, and put a dynamic and semi-submersible offshore drilling owned by Transocean. Manipulation, while drilling in the Macondo Prospect, causing the explosion can not be controlled explosion on a platform in which 11 crew members were killed and ignited a fireball visible from 40 miles (64 km) away
The biggest oil spill in history started on April 20th, 2010 by an oil ring called the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil ring was owned by an offshore oil drilling company called Transocean and they were leasing the oil ring to British Petroleum. The oil well was located on a seabed 4,993 feet below the surface of the ocean. On April 20th, a surge of natural gas penetrated through the concrete core and went up the Deepwater rig’s riser which led to the drilling platform catching fire, and exploding. This caused eleven people to die and injured another seventeen people. During this oil spill more than 200 million gallons of oil was pumped over a period of 87 days into the Gulf of Mexico until the well was capped in July, 2010. A study in the blowout preventer showed that huge blades known as blind shear rams
On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico exploded. Nearly five million barrels were poured into the sea over three months. The Deepwater Horizon oil rig was leased by BP from TransoceaN, a swiss company. It was operated on the Macondo Well. The Macondo Well is 50 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon is considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the United States. There were workers that were injured during the explosion and the Marine wildlife was endangered. According to Bethel, 28 workers were injured. 11 were fatally injured and 17 workers were severely injured (Bethel University, ). The Week before the explosion, a worker bumped the control switch, causing it
Deepwater Horizon oil Spill: BP’s drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico had an explosion in April 2010, causing the “largest oil spill catastrophe in the petroleum industry history”. It caused the death of 11 men and injury to several others. “More than 150,000 barrels of crude oil gushed into the sea, every day, for almost 5 months and up to 68,000 square miles of the Gulf 's surface were covered” (1).
