Early life
Mahatma Gandhi led one of the biggest movements in the world and inspired others, therefore many people might not have the privileges that they have today if it weren't for him.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born October 2nd, 1869 in Porbandar (Source #2).
He was in a Orthodox belief system (Source #3). He born into a family of the Hindu merchant class (Source #3). His father was a prime minister for a couple of small native states. (Source #2). As Nathuram Godse upset that Gandhi tolerated Muslims. Nathuram knelt before Gandhi, and then pulled out a pistol and shoot him three times (Source #2). Gandhi was assassinated on January 30th, 1948 at the age of 78
(Source #1). Even though he was assassinated his actions inspired future human rights movements. (Source #1). Close to 50 years after his death, Gandhi's ashes were spread into the Ganges river. (Source #2). As Gandhi's great-grandson did the act of spreading his ashes in the water. While he poured his great- grandfather into the river, Gandhi's admirer's chanted his name and some slogans to remember him by (Source #2). As Satyagraha still remains one of the strongest philosophies in freedom struggles throughout the world today (Source #1). Without intent Gandhi did inspire others to stick up for them self when it came to their race. Therefore with out Gandhi life wouldn't be as so called "nice" as it is now (Source #1). Mahatma Gandhi: Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India in 1869 and died in 1948. He was western educated, specifically trained in England. Although he was a nationalist, he was anti-modern because he was skeptical to industrialism. He believed in the ideal of satyagraha, the non-tolerance of evil, but also the understanding that violence is not the answer to that evil. He also believed in non-violence. He did not cooperate with anything British, specifically trading with the British, British schooling or products, and even paying taxes to the British. He served as a civil rights activist after being thrown off a train when refusing to move from his seat in first class. He became the leading member of Congress Party in the 1930’s and shortly after participated in the March to Sea for salt during the British imposed salt tax. Every single aspect of Gandhi’s life was peaceful, if the people around him decided to disobey and use violence as a means of getting what they wanted, Gandhi would take it upon himself to fast. He was eventually assassinated by a Hindus
In Gandhi’s On Civil Disobedience speech he said, “ We made it clear to the government that we would never bow to the outrageous laws.” He fought for Indians in South Africa for seven years and helped India gain their independence from the British in 1947. In the excerpts, Gandhi offers a glimpse of his parents’ life and his family tree and describes important events and notable aspects of his childhood and adolescence. Growing up, Gandhi did poorly in school, was very timid and isolated himself. However, eventually, he became more social. When he was born Great Britain was in control of India. He was born into a rich and wealthy family, he had left India to study law in London. Then after World War 1 had ended Gandhi has started a non-violent organization, his goal was to gain independence from Great Britain. He knew if he had tried to protest on the streets he would be sent to jail many times and would be beaten up harshly; however, he still done this knowing the consequences. When people in India had started to learn about the things that were happening they had started to agree with him and started to agree with his ideas. Mahatma Gandhi was an inspirational and peaceful activist for Indian rights. Gandhi developed a peaceful and harmful way to fight for basic human rights “Gandhi developed his philosophy of “Satyagraha,” or resistance through non-violent civil disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all Indians and non-whites.” (Gandhi’s Legacy). Gandhi encouraged many people to use more peaceful manners such as riots and fasting. Only few people have left legacies large enough to be known 59 years after their death. A name that is known by almost everyone on Earth, Ghandi. Mohandas Ghandi influenced thousands of Indian Civilians to use Satyagraha, resistance through non-violent civil disobedience. Mahatma Gandhi changed India’s history forever through disobedience. Even though he disobeyed the law he had a good reason to. India was under the British rule and the people were doing as british were telling them to do because they had no other option. Gandhi was the one who didn’t do as the british said, but instead stood against it because he knew that what they were doing was unfair. As he have said, “A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act”. Not only did he provide a strong leader and a beacon of hope for independence and equality in India for his people, but also the South Africans, and the entire world. He also brought peace to many Muslims and Hindus who had been fighting because of their different values, and to people around the world facing similar conflicts. Although some may believe that his assassination was necessary, it was extremely unjust, and based purely on emotion with no real, logical motive. Gandhi back then was a lawyer who was trying to find independence for India. Gaining independence for India wasn’t the only change that Gandhi tried to make but the protest The Salt March also started because 7% of peoples tax went towards salt (#). Unlike the Haitian Revolution, Gandhi refused to tolerate violence among his followers and cancelled demonstrations that resulted in violence (@). The protest was for 24 days and to also ban harvesting salt (#). Gandhi was repeatedly arrested and spent a total of six years in jail, but that only made him more popular (@). You would think someone who got constantly arrested would give up or end up condemning violence, but not Gandhi. His protest was slow but turned out to be very successful because of the results that were made. The results consisted of new constitution approved by Britain, A concession to limited self-government, and finally in 1947 India was declared an independent state (#). Unfortunately later after gaining independence, Gandhi was assassinated for trying to be peaceful and attempt to stop Hindu-Muslim rioting (@). Gandhi stated “ I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and nonviolence are as old as the hills. All I have done is to try new experiments in both on as vast a scale as I could do…. Those who believe in the simple truths I have laid down can propagate them only by living them”(Mohandas Gandhi 1). Gandhi was born in October 2, 1869 and died on January 30, 1948. Gandhi grow up in India and attended school, where he was a poor student. He married a young girl named Kasturbai at age thirteen. After that he went to college, failed every subject, and left college. Later his uncle encouraged him to go to England and study law (Mohandas 1). Mahatma Gandhi gave independence to India through nonviolence, peace, and unity.
Mahatma Gandhi taught people many things. He honestly had a great soul , to some people. However , people believing that Gandhi one bad idea lead to his death. The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi was unjust because he was peaceful, he fought for India’s freedom, and he believed in unity. In , the United States he influenced the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s.
A private citizen without health died on January 30, 1948. Mohandas K. Gandhi fell after being shot three times at the age of seventy-eight. Many people looked up to Gandhi. To pay respect, humanity followed by the UN lowered their flags to half-mast. Almost a million people waited near Jumna, not far from New Delhi, for the funeral to proceed. Not far from the river was a pyre built of stone, brick, and earth. Gandhi’s body will lie upon this pyre; having his head to the north, representing when a Buddha has ended his life.
Mahatma Gandhi is renowned all over the world for his nonviolent philosophies and impact upon civil rights. He was the primary leader of India’s move towards independence. Gandhi engineered a form of non-violent protest that would influence the world. He was born on 2nd October, 1869, in Porbandar, India. Gandhi studied law and advocated for the civil rights of Indians, and influenced many civil rights movements. Even after his death, Gandhi’s actions inspired future civil rights movements around the globe. He most notably impacted, civil rights movements in three regions of the world; South Africa, India and America.
