This semester for my service learning project, I decided to learn about the topic of human sex trafficking. The organization, The Ruth House, is one of the many organizations dedicated to helping those in need. The founder Dr. Donna Sallee’ believes in using the faith of Jesus Christ to minister to those women and children in need. According to statistics of the Florida National Organization for Women, there are 60,000 to 80,000 women who are trafficked into this horrid business every year to pimps, making a profit of $9.5 billion annually. In the business of sex trafficking, a pimp or also known as a trafficker, is anyone who receives money or something of value for the sexual exploitation of another person, controlling his victims almost entirely through physical violence and force. These men are often someone close to the victims, most of the time boyfriends with the goal of turning them out to make a profit. Women who …show more content…
Organizations such as The Ruth House is a resource to not only use for ourselves about especially the victims to reach out for help. Posters, Flyers, and social media post is enough to gain the attention of others to at least introduce the topic to them. It is understood that human sex trafficking is an uncomfortable topic of discussion, but it is crucial for us to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. This is not a movie; this is real life. U.S. Department of State has an article listing 15 ways you can help fight human trafficking. A Few of these are volunteering and support anti trafficking efforts within your community, encourage modern to include modern day slavery in the school curriculum, and work with local religious groups to support and spread awareness. National Human Trafficking awareness day is January 11th. Celebrate it by informing yourself and others, as well as take part in organizations such as rethreaded to help a victim make a
Human trafficking is the modernized version of slavery that involves force, fraud, and/or a type of labor in a sexual act. The United States government defines it to be “In which a sex act is forced in which the person induced has not yet been attained eighteen years of age” (National Institute of Justice). Human trafficking is a threat to all nations and promotes breakdown of families and can support organized crime. Trafficking can occur everywhere. Human trafficking and human smuggling are related to one another, but different crimes. The difference between smuggling and trafficking is that smuggling is the illegal movement of someone across a border while trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person.
Imagine knowing that your parents set you up to be raped, just so they can make money. This violence leads to depression and even suicide, making the children feel extremely weak and empty. Weak law enforcement and poverty has driven sex slavery out of hand. A solution to end this violence begins with people who raise awareness. To raise awareness, it is important to meet with the federal and local government to inform them on the issues and convince them to combat sex trafficking. Come up with different fundraisers for battered victims, host awareness events so people become familiar with the issue, and eventually the victims can become educated and well equipped with the proper care they need. Consider working with different organizations that help women who have fallen victims of prostitution, pornography, trafficking and other forms of sexual violence. Work with a religious community that can help raise money for families in poverty. This can decrease the amount of women and children traded for sex. Internationally, we need to become more familiar with, knowledgeable of, and aggressive to end this suffering of dehumanization and advertise what the poor victims have to face on a daily
Human Trafficking is the exploitation of men, women, and children in order to gain a monetary benefit from the involuntary sex acts the victims are forced to commit. Trafficking rings are usually run by one pimp or a family of pimps that charm the victim by offering them a better future of love and promise. However, this life does not consist of those charming promises. As the testimonies below will show, human trafficking may be stated as a good monetary business and life choice, but instead, trafficking violates human rights and leaves victims isolated from those who love them, and rejected by the world that does little to protect them.
Human trafficking, or the selling and buying of people, is a well-hidden yet prominent issue within today’s society. It is both an immoral and horrific topic that needs brought to attention and dealt with. When human beings are manipulated into work, sexual servitude, or economic hardship, human trafficking is occurring. In the year of 2006, only one individual is convicted of human trafficking per 800 victims (UNGIFT). By looking at straight statistics, reasons human trafficking happens, and the toll it has on people, it is very clear that this is a major issue that is happening in our world.
Human trafficking is a significant, but hard to spot problem in Houston – and across Texas. Houston is known as a hub for human trafficking, which involves young women brought here for prostitution because of our proximity to the Mexican border. One fourth of all trafficking victims rescued in the United States are found in Texas, mostly in Houston (McCall). In the year 2011 alone, there have been a number of arrests for Human Trafficking made in the Houston area as well as several brothels have been closed down. However, FBI reports at least two new brothels open monthly in Houston (Palmer). There are a number of ways to fight human trafficking including educating yourself, spreading the word, taking a look in your own community,
This research is exploratory because the researchers attempt to point out social trends that play a role in becoming a human trafficking victim. It goes beyond the mere description of human trafficking its causes and effects, the information that the researcher provide might be able to prevent the crime. Or at very least, educate potential victims. This is pure research because the researchers want to expand the body of knowledge of human trafficking. There has been substantial research in regards to victims of human trafficking, this particular study lists a few previous research components.
Rehabilitation for victims is available such as Freedom Place and Dream Center. Joy Friedman, a survivor of 27 years of sex trafficking in the United States, now serves as women’s program manager at Breaking Free, a Minnesota nonprofit group that helps women and children escape that world. On average, sex trafficking victims are between 12 and 14. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 300,000 U.S. children are sex slaves. Providing care for these victims is very important, their self-esteem is completely demolished and don’t know where to begin to fix themselves.

Though sex slavery can not be stopped over night, projects and advancements are being put in action to combat it. According to The Trafficking in Persons Report 2016, the government is currently and will continue to investigate allegations of sex tourism. Citizens against this slavery should not sit back and merely watch the government try to handle the issue. People need to support the government and other organizations against the fight of sex slavery by raising awareness, donating money, and giving their support to the cause. Groups should rescue, restore, protect, and empower former victims (“Child Sexual Exploitation and Slavery”). The rescuing of victims should not be the end. After suffering trauma and being enslaved, the former victims lives will never be the same. It is the job of different groups to provide education, supplies, and necessary recovery help. The most important part of the solution is spreading the word of how serious sex slavery is in Houston. With the support of citizens, help of the government, and determined minds, an end will be put to sex slavery in
We fail to prevent it, discuss it, or even acknowledge it. However, inaction will only exacerbate a problem that should not be allowed to continue. Gardner-Webb University “Release the Captives” club is an on campus anti-human trafficking club that raises awareness and funding for anti human trafficking organizations. But we still need help. There are a number of ways you can help us in stopping human trafficking: become involved in human anti-trafficking awareness, support any anti-trafficking organization that you feel comfortable with, pray for all (victims, responders, persecutors, and profiteers) involved in human trafficking, and continue to pray that God’s justice will break out in the
This article provided an overview of relevant issues surrounding contemporary sex trafficking, including risk factors. The article estimates that 600,000 to 800,000 men, women, and child are sex trafficked every year. It also explains three main factors that play into sex trafficking: human rights, migration, and security. This article exemplifies women’s lack of agency in relation to their bodies. Although there are male sex workers, there are many more female workers, further exploiting women’s sexuality. This aids in the fear women grow up and live with; the fear of being sold.
Regardless of “the growing recognition that human trafficking is an important national and global issue, little empirical research containing primary data has been published.” However, there are many that are passionate about this horrific matter and are determined to make a difference. For instance, the Fraser Health Authority is establishing a way that will help health workers identify signs of human trafficking. Their new program is called ‘Help, Don’t Hinder’ and helps workers identify signs of abuse in victims, specific injuries, certain living situations, “long work hours, and a lack of money, documents or permanent homes.” Many times the victim is unable to ask for help. A victim may look like an average everyday worker, customer, or person passing by on the street. This is why the most beneficial thing that one can do to help is to recognize the signs of human trafficking and know how to help. Not only this, but have the bravery to reach out to someone and give them the aid and support that they need. This program is expected to raise awareness over the next three years and increase research as well as legislative responses. All social workers throughout America should follow this example to help raise their awareness so they know when they see this issue happening around them, and help raise awareness in
First, one can educate themselves about how severe the crime is in the United States and what type of actions they should be looking for, if they suspect someone is a victim. Second, a person can identify any suspicious activity that may come across as human trafficking. If one has the opportunity to interact with a possible victim, without either one being harmed, they should try to discover further information (Braver, 2010). Some questions a spectator may want to ask are, “How did he or she come here? Did he or she have to pay a lot of money to get a job here? Is it what he or she expected?” (Braver, 2010). If one’s speculations lead them to believe there is evidence of human trafficking, they can “contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center and Hotline at 1-888-3737-888” (Braver, 2010). Third, one can become involved in organizations that help fight against human trafficking. Two companies well-known in the United States are Polaris Project and A21. Both organizations strive to make others aware of human trafficking, prosecute traffickers, provide services to victims, and fundraise money to continue restoration projects. Fourth, one can pay closer attention to their purchases, by checking if a company’s products take part in oppressed labor (Braver, 2010). Potential customers can notice if products may be a part of human
Over the past several years, human trafficking has become a sizable world-wide problem. Human Trafficking has had a considerable affect on the World and United States. To combat this, several laws and initiatives have been enacted. While this allows for some headway in combating this problem, there are still several things that we can do to help. This review of literature on Human Trafficking focuses on these areas and provides the information on the steps that can help combat this epidemic.
Many Americans remain ignorant of human trafficking within the United States, believing that this inhumane act only occurs in third-world countries. No one likes to believe that it can be happening in our own country let alone in some of our own states and cities. Society rarely takes the time to understand these women and what lead them into trafficking and what factors contributed to them staying in trafficking. This study seeks to voice the ability to raise awareness, enhance penalties for the traffickers/violator’s, and offer rehabilitation for the victims.
