“Cubao’s Jolly Miracle“
Most of us hear the greetings: “Jolly morning!”, “Jolly afternoon!” and “Jolly evening!” Well, even though we are not in the mood to be jolly or be bothered to smile, the aroma of the crispy and juicy fried chicken will control half of our senses. It turns that negative energy into a positive one. Jollibee, where the food is “Bida sa sarap!” (The star when it comes to deliciousness), rose from being a small ice cream parlor into the most popular brand name when it comes to fast-food in the Philippines. Owned by Mr. Tony Tan Caktiong, Jollibee has captured the palette of many Filipinos nationwide and overseas. Jollibee may be the “Wackiest, jolliest place on earth” (Bourdain, 2016) but the backstory behind Caktiong’s

Tony Tan Caktiong, a Filipino-Chinese entrepreneur, was the reason why we enjoy Jollibee’s bestselling Chickenjoy, the Filipino style spaghetti and goodies in their menu. Having a net worth of 3.6 Billion US Dollars (Forbes, 2017), his journey was a rags to riches story. Growing up in a poor family in Fujian Province (China), they moved here in the Philippines to build a better life away from poverty. His father worked as a chef in a Chinese Restaurant and later on started his own business that helped him study in the University of Santo Tomas to achieve a degree in Chemical engineering. He then opened up two ice cream parlor franchises that was owned by Magnolia, the franchises were situated in Cubao, Quezon City. The menu consisted of different Magnolia products (Ice cream) and later on added burgers and sandwiches. The burgers and sandwiches became the bestselling foods rather than ice cream so after they already opened up six ice cream parlors, they decided to change their business into a burger house by 1978. A new business needs a good brand name; Caktiong is a man of hard work and perseverance so he came up with an idea of having a bee as their brand name because he believes that they were always working hard for their honey. But hard work alone wouldn’t be worth it if they we’re not happy says Caktiong and that’s how he used the word “Jolly”. Now, Jollibee groups include Greenwich, Chowking, Red Ribbon, and Delifrance. For over 39 years, they have served us with good food and good service. There is no doubt that Jollibee is the best fast-food chain in the Philippines, by these examples and by the story of Mr. Caktiong’s way to success, Jollibee doesn’t just have the perfect meal but they also have an inspiring backstory. We love Jollibee. For us, Jollibee is a part of our wonderful Filipino culture because of the happiness that they can share; their motto “Bida ang saya” that Filipinos have whenever we feel sad and we just smile or laugh about it? Yes, it is a Filipino practice that Jollibee has. Now, because of this, Jollibee is the best fast-food chain in the
Walls and shelves of different treats, and Buc-ee’s even presents its own brand of Beaver Nuggets - a sweet, crunchy corn snack. And in each store, a counter the size of a small New York City apartment is overly stocked with 30 flavors beef jerky, smoked sausages and other cured meats. When standing in that area, you can smell the Bohemian garlic beef jerky, which had a pleasant salty pungency, and the cherry maple, which is a lot more subtly sweet than it sounds. Next to that, there’s a quick-service restaurant, prepping many dishes, ranging from smoked brisket to Tex-Mex tacos. Looking at the options of spicy pickled quail eggs to sweet apple pies, the food provided at Buc-ee’s is more than enough to eat for a small break on the road. The varieties and large portions of food seemed to have a meaning beyond consumption itself. As people carry to go boxes and not even open or taste some of the food during their stop, the food loses its meaning of being eaten and gains a meaning of being a souvenir. The cultural food alone provokes customers to want to keep these seemingly authentic, home cooked items, perhaps to share or give to others as novelties and gifts. With that, Buc-ee’s intends to provide more than necessary.
In 1951, S. Truett Cathy made an outstanding discovery. After fifteen years of being in the greasy fast food business he found a pressure-fryer that could cook a delicious chicken sandwich in the same time as it would a hamburger patty (Chik-Fil-A.com). Cathy loved it. He decided to birth ‘The Chik-Fil-A.’ Because of the noteable all chicken menu and new way of making chicken sandwiches, Cathy came up with the slogan, “We did not invent the chicken, just the chicken sandwich.” Believe it or not Chik-Fil-A is half a century old. The first ever to open was at Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta. Throughout the seventies and eighties this franchise expanded their business by opening new restaurants in mall food courts. Finally in 1986 Chik-Fil-A opened their very first ever freestanding restaurant. Now as of 2015 there at approximately 1,900 locations in forty-two states (Chik-Fil-A.com). There are in fact twenty eight different Chik-Fil-A locations in the state of Arizona. But, in Vail, Arizona, there are zero of
In order to distinguish itself from competitors, especially Qdoba doesn’t want to be “me-too Chipotle”, Qdoba redesigned everything includes in-store layout, new branding, and personalized service. Furthermore, Qdoba introduced a kid’s menu and has 24 open hours for some locations to satisfy more customer needs.
The Modesto Bee is a California daily paper, established in 1884 as the Daily Evening News and distributed constantly as a day by day under an assortment of names. Preceding its buy by Charles K. McClatchy and McClatchy Newspapers in 1924, it converged around the same time with the Modesto News-Herald, embracing that name as a major aspect of a combination. In 1933 it changed its name to the Modesto Bee and News-Herald, and in 1975 truncated the name on its masthead to the Modesto Bee. Its present proprietor, is the relative firm, McClatchy Company, an American daily paper organization.
Ah Christmas/Winter. The time of the year marked by the sound of joyous carols , cheerful talk of holiday plans, skating, candy canes, turkeys, family dinners, christmas sale signs plastered in front of almost every store, jesus coming down from the heavens, crappy nativity art and the general feeling of togetherness. But also as not being recognized by most people the one time of year when bee colonies are suppose to begin to healthily dwindle in numbers. As part of of an healthy ecological cycle, many wild & domesticated bee populations decline a bit in number during the winter season only to revive themselves later in the spring/summer, but that hasn’t been the case for many years. Ever since 1998 beekeepers have noticed significant drops in bee populations, throughout all seasons. In 2011, Canada saw
The Jebusites were a Canaanite tribe who built and lived in Jerusalem prior to its invasion by King David. The Books of Kings state that Jerusalem was known as Jebus before this event. According to some biblical chronologies, the city was overthrown by King David in 1003 BC or according to other sources 869 BC. The Hebrew Bible describes the Jebusites as living in the mountains, besides Jerusalem. (Numbers 13:29, Joshua 11:3) In Exodus, the 'good and large land, flowing with milk and honey' which was promised to Moses as the future home of the distressed Hebrew people included the land of the Jebusites (Exodus 3:8). According to the Book of Joshua, Adonizedek led an alliance of Jebusites, and the tribes from the neighboring cities of Jarmut, Lachish, Eglon and Hebron against Joshua, (Joshua 10:1-3) but was soundly defeated, and killed.
Sue monk kidd wrote a book called secret life of bees published on november 8, 2001 . The book was about a girl named lily and how she wants to know more about her mom and wants to run from her father T. ray. In the book their is a well developed character named June boatwright. June was going to have a wedding and her fiance left her at the alter. August , sister of June took care of a little girl named Debra Owens during the time of segregation. Since june was born during this dark time I believe that she distrusted every white person that she didn't know because most were racist during this time. Due to the segregation and the distrust she had it was hard for her to trust white people like debras daughter lily and for her to gain confidence to marry again.
As plants aren’t, by their nature, very mobile they have developed a variety of ways of protecting themselves from all things herbivorous. Many have evolved spikes, stings and even just an unpleasant taste. However, many went down the route of the ultimate deterrent – being so poisonous that anything eating them was unlikely to ever do so again.
* Kozy Shack made a point to position their products in the market as nutritional, healthy, and family holiday ready for the more affluent family. In that market positioning, people are associating their
In the book, The Secret Life of Bees, there is a significant bond within the female community in Lily’s life. These women not only teach Lily to love herself and others, but to pursue love. It is through the guidance of her community, Deborah. Rosaleen, the Boatwright sisters, and the Daughters of Mary, that Lily is able to gain strength and growth, mentally and emotionally. Her journey begins with two women who are Lily’s first mother figures, Deborah and Rosaleen.
Books have a way of bringing people together, by showing different points of view. One of the most inspiring books I have read, is The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. This contemporary novel of a young girl's journey to discover herself, has the ability to engage readers from many different walks of life. I believe that everyone in my generation should read this novel, as this coming of age story will leave readers with a new outlook on family and how people can change.
The decline in a variety of bee populations on a global scale has been obvious since the 1990s and scientists have been struggling with what is actually causing this decline. Current studies show that the use of systemic pesticides, specifically neonicotinoids, has been causing the number of bees to decrease rapidly. There are currently seven different types of neonicotinoids used in the agricultural industry today including imidacloprid, clothianidin, acetamiprid, thiamethoxam, thiacloprid, dinotefuran, and nithiazine. Each of these neonicotinoids are currently being studied and the most commonly used neonicotinoid today is imidacloprid.
Growing up, I had the privilege of exploring different cultures in my community; one aspect - food. A love for going to a Chinese restaurant by my school and converse in Mandarin Chinese with the waitress, or go to the Mexican grills near my home and learn the cuisine in Spanish, spurred my passion for finding a connection to my own culture’s value of food. With so many wide ranges of cultural foods, I have begun to learn that it wasn't just one culture that loved food or good times, but a universal theme.
Food is very much a part of pop culture, and the beliefs, practices, and trends in a culture affect its eating practices. Pop culture includes the ideas and objects generated by a society, including foods, and other systems, as well as the impact of these ideas and objects on society. For example, Mcdonald's is another of the thousands of fast food chains that populate our cities though they often use the term “popular culture” only to refer to media forms. Their popularity has also increased internationally. Although all humans need food to survive, people's food habits and how they obtain, prepare, and consume food, are the result of learned behaviors. Mcdonald’s, like other food chains, has made an effort to ‘localize’ its products so that they will be more successful in each different cultural context. These collective behaviors, as well as the values and attitudes they reflect, come to represent a group’s pop culture.
McDonalds took on the Pilipino market in 1981 and took aim on Jollibee and its market. McDonalds had an immense amount of resources, capital and experience in the fast food industry. Jollibee on the other hand had the advantage because of their market experience and recognition for good food among the Philippines. The ability for Jollibee to be first in the Philippines gave them the advantage to outline what great food tasted like and gain the trust of the local community by using local resources. Jollibee was able to use cultural proximity to their advantage and create a larger hamburger that tasted better than that of McDonalds. The spicy patties from Jollibee were a hit amongst the Pilipino versus the plain patties from McDonalds. The slightly more expensive Jollibee was still
