Nelson Mandela was imprisoned and tried in South Africa in the year of 1952, for inciting his fellow black South Africans to stand up against Apartheid. “Apartheid, a system of segregation based on race that gave advantages to whites while restricting blacks to labor reserves” Mandela, being a well-known figure in South Africa long before becoming president, had a strong established credibility within the black community. Mandela was known for working and leading in the African National Congress (ANC) and enduring years in prison for his cause, therefore people had faith and respect for.
