Throughout the history of the humanity, there were many events happened that show of the courage of many people. After the story “ Unbroken” that tells us about Louis Zamperini and his story , we can see that he is an example of a courage person, beside that, Nelson Mandela is another examples of this characteristic. Nelson was the democratic leader that fought for justice and freedom in South Africa, he spend over 20 years in prison for the apartheid regime. But with his courage and smartness, he won against the racism and became the leader of the new South Africa. And In 1993, he received a Nobel Peace Prize for all that he did and contributed for the humanity.
Nelson Mandela remains to be one of the most influential people in the history of South Africa. He defeated apartheid and transformed South Africa into one united nation. Mandela showed phat resiliency by going from prisoner to president, but before he could accomplish all of this, he had a lot of work to do. His main focuses were on the freedoms and obligations of his people. He compared the two words and showed us in his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, what they meant to him.
The life and work of Nelson Mandela symbolizes the conquest of the human spirit and the dedication of mankind.
(Mandela 1). Nelson Mandela had a different method than most, as he used his platform to create change and give freedom and rights to his people. The text also says, “It is from these comrades in the struggle that I learned the meaning of courage… I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. I felt fear myself more times than I can remember, but I hid it behind a mask of boldness” (Mandela 4). One great characteristic of Mandela is that he had the ability to never show fear or doubt, no matter the circumstances, he always proved to be a leader and thus the reason he was able to accomplish so much. Finally, the text says, “I never lost hope that this great transformation would occur. Not only because of the great heroes I have already cited, but because of the courage of the ordinary men and women of my country” (Mandela 5). Mandela fought through the toughest of situations and even went to prison for 27 years, just for his people, and continued to fight for them and their rights. These individuals all had hopes and dreams for their people, and they put everything they had into making sure that they was accomplished.
Nelson Mandela once stated “there is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires.” This powerful quote was a summary of his life. Nelson was a liberating activist in South Africa. His purpose as a leader was to end apartheid and advocate for human rights. On the journey to his purpose, Nelson loved, lived and lost. Nelson fulfilled his duty as a vocation leader but at the cost of his freedom, family and life.
Those who made a difference and changed the world inspire us to seek for world peace. Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. are two historical leaders who made a lot of changes to their countries. Both of those heroes fought for Black people’s rights. Nelson Mandela was the first black South African president to be elected democratically. Martin Luther King was the leader of the African American Civil Rights Movement.
In 1948, the government introduced apartheid, which left the country’s non-white majority with few economic opportunities. In response, Mandela travelled throughout South Africa and encouraged people to take part in nonviolent demonstrations against the government’s racial segregation policies. He was arrested for organizing anti-government activities and eventually sentenced to life in prison. “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities,” he said during his trial. “It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” Mandela’s
For twenty-seven years, prison was home for Nelson Mandela. After the white supremacist party won South Africa's election in 1948, a constitution was formed that was known to be racist towards black. That brought uprising which Mandela was a part of, since he was a black male with limited rights. Through early protesting, Mandela made sure his voice was heard, and it was heard so much that the law officials started to inhibit his
A group called the African National Congress Youth League, which was within the ANC, wanted to strengthen the rural peasants and working people, but believed that the classic methods of peaceful petitioning was no longer able to impact anything. Thus, this group resorted to boycott, strike, civil disobedience, and non-cooperation, which were later adopted by the ANC as their older techniques of protest were finally recognized as ineffective. In 1961, Mandela also started to believe that armed struggle was the only way that change could have been achieved he said that “It was only when all else had failed, when all channels of peaceful protest had been barred to us, that the decision was made to embark on violent forms of political struggle.”(Nelson Mandela, History.com). Thus, in an attempt to finally bring about significant change, he planned an armed shoot off of the ANC to end the apartheid, and also orchestrated a three-day national workers strike. This act of impudence was not taken kindly by the government, leading to a sentence to five years in prison, which was later elongated to a life imprisonment, but he never lost his spirit to fight for his people, his country. Mandela was incarcerated on an island for 18 out of his 27 years in prison, where he also faced many challenges,
Although black skin brought him limits, he contributed his whole life to the fight for the freedom. Although time made him lose his family and normal life, there was still the light of hope in his tired eyes. He is Mandela, the man who was born as a prince of a tribe, Thembu, but dedicated his whole life to the fighting for civil rights. He spent 27 years in the jail, but when he got released, he became the President of South Africa. Mandela’s leadership and commitment of civil rights brought him followers, and then his 27-year fighting brought liberty to his country. Mandela was such a man who stood with people, and he became a member of civil rights movement when he was a teenager.
One large problem that occurred because of apartheid and was the cause of many protests was from 1961-1994, 3.5 million colored people and their families were forced out of their homes while their property was sold for very low prices to white farmers. This was just one example of events that were completely unfair to the colored population. Nelson Mandela was the person who stopped these acts from happening. In 1994, Mandela became the country’s first colored president. Instead of trying to make the people who put him into jail for 27 years suffer in consequences, he embraced them and used peace to unite everyone as equals, and not oppressing the people who had oppressed him for most of his life. Apartheid was a very rough time for anyone who lived in South Africa before Nelson Mandela and his peace helped to stop it.
Mandela lived a long life and made so many differences for the people of today in
I have always thought that Nelson Mandela has been one of the most important people in history. I find it very fascinating that one man could end the Apartheid and that is why I want to find out more about this. South Africa is a country with a past of enforced racism and separation of its multi-racial community. The White Europeans invaded South Africa and started a political system known as 'Apartheid' (meaning 'apartness'). This system severely restricted the rights and lifestyle of the non-White inhabitants of the country forcing them to live separately from the White Europeans. I have chosen to investigate how the Apartheid affected people’s lives, and also how and why the Apartheid system rose and fell in South Africa.
