Pompei
For my World Heritage Site Research Assignment I have chosen to do to the ancient city of Pompeii.
Name and geographically locate on world heritage site:
Where is it located?
Pompei is located in the province of Naples, Italy.
What is there?
Pompei was a richly decorated roman city for the rich in Rome and its surrounding cities to come to on a holiday. Pompei was filled to the brim with splendid roman baths and magnificent artworks and sculptures. On the 24th of August, AD 79, Vesuvius, a volcano previously thought to be dormant, exploded and covered Pompeii, the city of Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata with a thick layer of ash.
Why is it there?
Pompei was one of the most significant ports on the Bay of Naples and the neighbouring inhabited areas such as Nola, Nuceria and Aceria would have sent their harvests there for transportation and trading across the Empire. Merchandise such as olives, olive oil, wine, wool, fish sauce, salt, walnuts, figs, almonds, cherries, apricots, onions, cabbages and wheat were exported and imports included exotic fruit, spices, giant clams, silk, sandal wood, wild animals for the arena and slaves to man the thriving agricultural industry. It was built where it was because of the rich volcanic soil from previous eruptions of Vesuvius. This soil made Pompei great for growing fruits and vegetables and other foods.

The eruption entirely destroyed Pompeii, but ironically was the cause of their durability and subsistence over the centuries. Though, excavation to uncover the city, has brought with it the corrosion, from both natural and human sources (whether unintentional or deliberate) of
The layers of pumice and ash that fell on Pompeii formed a shell over the city, preserving it as a time capsule of Roman life. Archaeologists have unearthed dazzling treasures, like jewels, mosaic artwork, and statues. They even found a basket of petrified eggs and the remains of a bowl of chicken soup.
Historians consider the Forum to be the ‘centre of Pompeian life’ therefore it is an important aspect to study as numerous buildings and many events occurred there. From the latest evidence, it is believed that the Pompeian Forum was undergoing a ‘comprehensive, vigorous and ambitious post-earthquake restoration.’ (Bradley. 2005, p.87). The Forum at Herculaneum, however, is still buried under the town of Resina and therefore there is not enough physical evidence to provide a great depth of information. Studies were concentrated on the Forum at Pompeii.
He divided Pompeii into nine regions. The blocks in each region were numbered and each house on the street had its own number given to it, so that each house could easily located. Fiorelli developed the technique of using cement to make casts of bodies. He would pour cement into the hollows formed in the volcanic ash where bodies had disintegrated. The excavation continued after the interruption of World War II under the control of Amedeo Maiuri. Under Mairui control large amounts of intense activity saw the discovery of prestigious buildings. For example, the Villa of the Mysteries, the complete recognition of the ancient town's perimeter, the excavation of most of Regio I and II and the necropolis of Porta Nocera, this work allowed us to get a good look into Pompeii's past. The excavation has continued after Maiuri finished his work in 1961. Today, the evacuation of Pompeii is still an ongoing process that began almost three centuries ago. The rediscovery of Pompeii has allowed archeologists learn an incredible amount of information about ancient Roman
Pompeii was founded in 7th century BC and was at the peak of it’s existence. It was even popular for rich Roman tourists to stay there (List25). Even Nero, a Roman emperor, had one of his summer houses in Pompeii, and one of his wives was born there (Cartwright 3). After August 24, 79 AD, Pompeii was forgotten. Soon, grass and flowers covered the city (Etienne 11). After a while, Pompeii was called “Civias” or ancient city (Goor 13). Pompeii's name was
There is a lot of evidence for business in Pompeii, mostly found in and around the forum and macellum, there is little evidence from the corpses found but a lot of equipment has been uncovered from various jobs. The forum and Macellum both played a big part in the lives of the residents of Pompeii; whether they worked there or not, it is likely people visited them very often to buy and sell. A lot of the jobs in Pompeii were well paid, and because of this, it was quite a wealthy

They would take care of their personal hygiene and take care of cleaning their bodies to avoid body odor, the Pompeian women would wear two types of perfume, the diapasmata, and unguentum. All people have had an urge to buy something, sometime in their life. Bryan Brown wrote “Pompeii’s Secrets” in the New York Times, where Brown reveals that the city Pompeii could give one of the best looks into the Roman past ever found and has so much to offer in educational terms, although it comes at a formidable price. Many would argue that spending money on preserving and uncovering a city is not worth it when consequently there is so much happening around the world that people tend to turn a blind eye to. Nevertheless, the site of Pompeii has allowed the world today to understand new information about the ancient Roman life and how much the Roman people have contributed to what the modern world has today.
During the re-examining the Ancient people killed in the eruption, scientists have discovered that ancient people of Pompeii seemed to have perfect teeth, this seems to be from their healthy diet and the high fluorine air and water of their environment. And we know this because the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum had access to a wide range of fresh produces such as bread, cheese, nuts and salads. Organic materials have been found in Herculaneum including dates, figs, prunes, almonds, chestnuts, walnuts, olives, myrtle berry. Pomegranates and loaves of bread. At Pompeii a priest's meal was found in the ruins of the temple of Isis, this included eggs, walnuts, fish and cereal.
