Thomas Merton was born in Predes, France on January 31, 1915. He and his family moved to Long Island, NY shortly after to get away the dangers of World War I. His mother died of stomach cancer when Merton was very young and his father died when he was 16. Merton lived with his grandparents until he earned a scholarship to Clare College in Cambridge, England. Unfortunately, Merton would skip classes and go partying instead. He moved to the US and attended Columbia University to start with a clean slate and change his ways. During his time studying for a Masters in English literature at Columbia, he converted to Catholicism. He then attended Fordham University in Bronx, where he continued his education on Greek and Latin literature. Not only did Cahill study Greek and Latin, but he also studied medieval philosophy, theology, and scripture. Cahill earned a B.A. in classical literature and philosophy.

Although a lot of people thought that Tom Robinson was guilty of raping Mayella, there was substantial evidence that shows that he clearly was not guilty of the crime he was accused of.
