Specific Purpose: Give tribute to John Locke
Short bio: John Locke was born August 29th 1632 in England. He died October 28th 1724. Locke received both his bachelors and master’s degree in medicine in 1658 at Oxford University. He contributed to democracy, modern day thought, and the constitution. John Locke played an important role in making our nation the way it is today.
Thesis: Locke was a great thinker, courageous, and knowledgeable.

a. Locke believed the people were enabled to natural rights. These rights are life, liberty, and the protection of their property.
b. His main interests were political, scientific, and epistemological (how our minds work).

Locke’s thought on having a king, laws, and a civil society under a social contract was so all men can enjoy and protect their rights. Where all men obtain the right to life, all humans have the right to live and life shouldn't be taken away from another human being. The right to liberty, protecting an individual's freedom and unreasonable detention. The right to property, a citizen in which Locke thought a human's labour was his own, anything created or made should remain that individuals as well and the right to rebel against unjust rulers and laws.
Locke is best known for his philosophical ideals regarding the rights of humankind- all individuals have the right to life, liberty, and property.
These rights included life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He also believed in having a limited government. His ideas had a great impact on the U.S. government and the Declaration of Independence. John Locke’s influence was evident in the Declaration of Independence when it said, “…that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” The colonists believed they had these unalienable rights, therefore the Americans established a government where people would be guaranteed these rights. The Americans believed that Britain was “deaf to the voice of justice.” Britain refused to respond to the outcries of the colonists. John Locke believed selfishness would always get in the way of acting morally, and Britain’s selfishness was blinding them from the suffering the colonists faced. In his Second Treatise on Government Locke focus’ on liberalism & capitalism, defending the claim that men are by nature free and equal against the idea that God had made all people subject to a king. He argued that people have ‘natural rights’, such as the right to life, liberty, and property, that hold the foundation for the major laws of a society. He says, “…we must consider, what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit.” (2nd Treatise, Chapter 2, sec 4). John Locke used this claim, that all men were naturally free and equal, for understanding the idea of a government as a result of a social contract. This is where people in the state of nature transfer some of their rights to the government in order to better guarantee the steady and comfortable enjoyment of their lives, liberty, and property.
John Locke had many accomplishments. John Locke has public may significance writing; Essay Concerning Human Understanding in 1689, Two Treaties of Government in 1690, and Letters Concerning Toleration in 1689-1692. John Locke’s “Essay Concerning Human Understanding” defined the theory of human knowledge, identity and selfhood. In his “Two Treatises of Government” believing that the legitimacy of government relies on consent from its citizens which is given on the basis of equality. A government has the duty to protect the natural rights of its people, if they fail to protect these rights, the citizen have the right to overthrow the government. On August 29 1632 John Locke was born in a town named Wrington and lived in a small Somerset village. His mother died when John was at a very young age. His father was a country lawyer and died a couple years after his mother. He went to Westminster in1646 and then Oxford in 1652. In 1666 John started practicing medicine on Lord Ashley. Ashley and Locke became known to become good friends. In 1668 Locke was elected to be in the Royal Society. The Royal Society was for improving natural knowledge. John did a lot of amazing things in his life time and he accomplished a lot and the one thing that influenced John the most was most likely to be that his parents died at a very young age and that usually has a great effect on children that can later lead into adult hood.

Locke was born into a Puritan family, but he was able to receive a good education. A good education was difficult to get during this time unless you were of a higher social class, but luckily for Locke his father has connections to the English government. The first school he attended was Westminster school in 1647 then continued his schooling at Christ Church, University of Oxford (1652). While at Christ Church he studied medicine and graduated in 1656. Locke’s extensive schooling led to him being elected to the Royal Society in 1668. Locke graduated with a bachelors in medicine in 1674, he then moved to London to be Lord Ashley’s (Lord of Shaftsbury) personal physician. John Locke was an enlightenment thinker of the 18th century. He was born is a small village in Southwest England in 1632. He was the most significant enlightenment thinker because he inspired other philosopher such as Voltaire, Paine and Rousseau. Another reasons is he inspired the checks and balances and separation of power in the United States and many other countries today. Finally he inspired the basis of the Declaration of independance. John Locke was the most significant philosopher of the enlightenment Era because he believed that believed that humans were born with certain natural rights, rights of life, liberty and property. Locke believed that all people had those rights, and that they are universal.
Locke was a well-educated man, having attended several prestigious schools, that was not scared to think differently than what he was taught. His perception of mankind seemed to be that men are all good and kind. This goes against what Thomas Hobbes believed and probably many others, which thought that all men were out for themselves.

In his writings, he proclaimed his opinion of mans natural right. He believed every man had the right to life, liberty, and property. That the government should put its efforts into protecting these God given rights, for the power the government holds is given to it by the people. Locke states, “But though men, when they enter into society give up the equality, liberty, and executive power they had in the state of Nature into the hands of society. . . ” He is explaining the sacrifices people make by moving into an organized society. He states that by giving up these things, protection is placed upon the persons property, because governments make laws to protect each citizens rights. However, in some cases, when the general public believe fit, the people can remove their legislative power. They then can replace it with someone who respects the power given to them, and follows the peoples wishes instead of their own
John Locke was the man who began to express the idea of natural rights. The idea of natural rights is that all humans are born with three natural rights: life, liberty, and property. You are meant to respect these rights, which gives us limits as humans. For example, one can not just rob someone’s house without consequences. John Locke was born on August 29, 1632, into a middle class family during late Renaissance England. Locke started his studies at Christ Church in Oxford. He then went into medical studies and received a medical license, which he practiced under Anthony Cooper. They became friends, and when Cooper became Earl of Shaftesbury, Locke was able to hold minor government jobs and became involved in politics. Shaftesbury steered Locke towards the views of a government whose law was fair to all, and all were under the law.
