Respect: The Second Character The second character count we discussed in class is respect. Respect is “a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in the appropriate way” or treating people and their property with the kindness they deserve (Merriam-Webster). Respect is being polite, showing deference to those in rightful authority, and not gossiping. Being polite is treating people with the kindness they deserve. The obvious example is saying please and thank you. Some other examples of respect from politeness is not talking on cell phones in cafes, stores, restaurants, and other public places where the conversations can disturb others. Others are not cutting in line and not cutting people off in traffic. Also, …show more content…
The first example seen is Erin Gruwell showing respect to her students. When she met her students, she believed they had potential when no one else did and treated them that way. The second example is when the students start to respect each other. Mrs. Gruwell had all of the student play “the line game”, and they got to see that no matter how different they are, they’ve all lost someone important to them through gang attacks. This is an example because the students start to treat the others the same way they want others to treat them. The third example seen is the students showing respect to the Holocaust survivors and Mrs. Gruwell after she got the ability to take the students to the Holocaust museum and the restaurant at the hotel she worked at. The students saw that Mrs. Gruwell and the Holocaust survivors were important, and they treated them how people should treat important people. Another example is seen while Erin and her dad are packing up Mr. Gruwell’s things. Her dad tells her about him agreeing with her decision to become a teacher at Wilson High School. This is respect because he is treating her with kindness and
Having an older sibling is rough already, but having a brother that you have to worry about him breaking in and stealing valuables of your own, that's tough and the main character Gordie Jessup has to deal with the betrayal of his older brother, Chase Jessup everyday throughout Katherine Holubitskys’s novel “Tweaked”. Gordie’s efforts trying to fix his family are overwhelmed by Chase’s drug addiction and money debts he has with his dealers. There are many themes throughout the book.
“ His Expression remained the same- cynical, defiant, painful” (Gaines 84). Miss Emma did not think that Jefferson knew he was going to be put in the chair, which kind of furthers this whole idea that everyone has that’s he’s incompetent. Even his own aunt without realizing has degraded him. I think that maybe Jefferson can’t read or write but he’s a human who understands laws. At the beginning of the book I was feeding into the notion that he was mentally challenged, but I think now that he just grew up in the uneducated black stigma put on him by white people not letting black school have the same education. And so he knows he is going to die, he doesn’t fight he doesn’t resist he faces the unjust punishment with grace and is going o let
Although Janie is raised by Nanny, her grandmother, as a child, both Janie and Nanny lived in the backyard house of a white couple named the Washburns. Growing up, Janie went to a predominantly black elementary school and was constantly teased for her physical appearance, especially by one of her classmates, Mayrella. During Janie’s childhood, “[d]ere wuz uh knotty head gal name Mayrella dat useter git mad every time she look at [her]” (Hurston 9). Here, Mayrella’s character towards Janie can be seen through the porch of Eatonville. Both Mayrella and the porch-sitters embody judgment and envy towards Janie because of the same reason--her physical appearance. At school, Janie is viewed as an outcast because she grew up in a predominantly white environment at home,
Grant Wiggins is very conflicted and confused about many aspects of his life when he comes back to his home town. Despite his reluctance, he is eventually forced to overcome his defeatist attitude and accept the sense of responsibility that Tante Lou and Miss Emma are trying to instill in him. Grant is also haunted by his past having grown up in a very racist small town which he could never find a way to deal with.
The colonists had been self-ruling for many years and as such had a strong foundation to form or build a government. Even though they had their own governing bodies, when the monarchy started neglecting them by enforcing stringent rules they felt that it was unfair. They believed that a government could be legitimate if it must require the consent of the governed people and if it must as well respect human liberty because it was given by Creator and it existed prior to any government. Having felt such ethics, the colonists wrote down these principles and immediately put into
Both Dade and Julian where fixated on proving themselves right and defending their beliefs about
At first I tried using the Chaldean Chart on Veronica. She got the number 5, which is even farther away from her personality than 1 was, with the exception of one aspect: resourceful. Because she depends on others to solve her problems, she is using her resources around her to have the problems solved. Other than that, neither number matches her in the slightest (almost the exact opposite). The number that would represent Veronica the best would be 6 or 2.
There are many character traits that make someone successful in life. Some traits you are born with, other traits are mindsets. There are a few character traits that coaches, teachers, bosses, or any other significant figure looks for in particular. One of the most important character traits is a hard-working attitude. You aren’t born with a hard-working attitude. It is a mindset. You may not be the best employee, but an employer will be more willing to work with someone that works hard than someone that can do the job but is lazy. Although I am not the best at everything, I give 100% effort in everything that I do and believe that working hard is the most important trait a person can possess.
There is example of being respectful toward each other in TV show or movies. There was a TV show called Girl Meets the World and there was a character name riley who always treat her family, friends and friends with respect. she always tried to be good friends to her friends. She never like talk back at them and she usually listen to what they have to say especially her mother whom she really admired . She never get a attitude to them except one time. For example, whenever she go to school and is in the class she will never talk back to her teacher especially consider the fact one of her teacher is her father. She will not cause trouble in the class and talk in class if It got do with what her father were teaching In class.
In society today it is common for someone to be respectful to their elders or told to do so, but when we are respectful to our peers and those younger or “below” us it shows great character. People want to be respected and seen as grown up, and the best way to do that is to be respectful to others. The best way to earn respect is to give respect. People always say that we reap what we sow and respect is a great example of this. When we are respectful to other they will, in turn, be respectful to us. Someone with strong character is respectful and grateful to others. Benjamin Franklin is a great example of a person with strong
Why is character important? Why is it important to be a person of good morals, ethics, and character? Can that make you more productive in life, family, school, business, work, etc. ?
There he was, seven months into an eleven-month mission trip eating a warm bowl of noodles with a crimson broth that he ordered by pointing to the picture with the Thai script. It was only until after consuming the dish that he was told the broth was made of pig’s blood ("11 Questions"). My brother Jonathan, the person who grew up memorizing The Lord of the Rings films, writing intricate plays, and finding his only real outdoors time at Disneyland on family trips every other year, was the last person I would think would travel to twelve different countries in eleven months. Jonathan nonetheless, felt a spiritual calling that pushed him gave up his fast-pace comfortable New York City life to
Students may exhibit disrespectful behaviors for several reasons. One of these reasons being that they lack an understanding of respect and have limited experiences with receiving or showing respect (Borba, 2017). It is important to consider a student’s background when they display disrespectful behaviors (McNeely, 2017). If students have not seen respect modeled frequently in their lives, it is understandable that may not understand this behavior (Borba, 2017).
Look after your appearance – appearance is important, it can give us confidence or it can make us feel awkward. Dressing smart for the right occasion gives us self-confidence. Dress for your own benefit: don’t dress in the expectation of pleasing others and receiving compliments.
When teachers show respect to their students, they are creating an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves; students learn to respect the educator as well as their peers. Essentially, showing respect for students not only exemplifies appropriate student behavior, but also lets them know that they are worthy of respect even in the face of misbehavior. Setting high expectations for students and believing in their abilities to achieve are equally prominent characteristics for teachers to have. Many students are only going to do the bare minimum of what is required, so setting high standards is significant. It signifies that educators are ensuring that students are getting the most out of an education—challenging them to live up to their fullest potential. When educators believe in their students, they push them to succeed. Educators should be a source for guidance and encouragement, especially when students are feeling discouraged or just need someone to give them an extra push. Furthermore, educators need to
