I must say, this is very well written Tristan. I wasn't even aware of the term tautology. Thalia would constantly leave Dobbie for not being who she wanted him to be. I believe true love is in accepting someone as a whole for who they are. Dobbie was righteous in that he searched for someone to have a clean start with, someone that wasn't after money and would accept him. However, Dobbie might have gone after Whitney for money instead of making his own, in my interpretation of the story. I favor your analogy of the diamond in the rough, it is certainly not a fallacy.
