Throughout history there are examples of transformational leaders; charismatic people who others are naturally attracted to. Moreover, there are those who seem to have the innate ability to lead effortlessly for whom transformational leadership comes easily. For example, Florence Nightingale was a transformational leader whose influence continues to shape the evolution of nursing yet today. Nightingale’s leadership was mindful, with a clarity of purpose that has set the tone for nursing leaders throughout history (Hegge, 2011).
It is a much easier road to follow as a transactional leader who offers a quid pro quo style of leadership, offering tangible rewards that encourage others to follow rather than inspiring them
As I take a moment to reflect on my time here, I have learned that I have traits of a Transformational Leader but that I also have room for improvement. I have highlighted areas in where I felt I needed the most improvement to become the Transformational Leader that I aspire to be. For the next three to five years, I plan to implement these changes to improve the way that I utilize the Elements of Adaptability, The Who, Stakes and Situation, Impact on Work Center Climate, and Ethical Behavior concepts. Understanding and effectively implementing these changes will make me a better leader for my subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
This paper summarizes the article written by Cam Caldwell, Rolf D. Dixon, Larry A. Floyd, Joe Chaudoin, Johnathan Post, and Gaynor Cheokas regarding the need for a new type of leadership in today’s social work environment, defined as Transformative leadership. The article itself varies in the definition, however in a broad sense Transformative leadership is maintaining good moral standing and sound business ethics among employees and individuals inside and outside the workplace. However, in order to reach this theoretical level of business related moral and ethical leadership known as
When one thinks of leaders, they think of those who hold a high profile position or someone who is highly visible in the public eye. A leader, regardless of prestige is someone who can easily influence and inspire the actions and goals of others. The definition of a leader in Nursing Leadership and Management in Nursing states, “leadership is commonly defined as a process of influence in which the leader influences others towards goal achievement (Kelly, 2012 p.2). Leaders are needed at all levels and nurses take a leadership role by being advocates for their patients. There are many leadership theories and styles in nursing but this paper will focus on transformational leadership and its application to nursing. Transformational leadership is important in nursing, due to its ever changing and ever evolving healthcare methods and technology.
Transactional leadership is built on reciprocity, the ways in which leaders and followers influence one another, and the idea that the relationship between leader and their followers develops from the exchange of some reward, such as performance rating’s, pay, recognition, or praise (Marturano, 2004). This style of leadership does not promote a close relationship amongst the boss
Leading a health care organization comes with immense responsibility and is not an easy task. Transformational leadership has proven to be an effective leadership style in the nursing profession, demonstrating a clear mission, a commitment to excellence, and the ability to motivate and lead others to higher levels of achievement (Schwartz, Spencer, Wilson, & Wood, 2001). Characteristics and qualities of an effective leader include
As we know the healthcare system is constantly changing, therefore requiring effective leadership among nurses. With that said leadership that promotes positive change is necessary in a health care setting. Transformational leadership was developed by leadership expert James MacGregor Burns in the late 1970’s. Transformational leadership is considered a contemporary leadership theory. Contemporary theories of leadership place emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, and is built around the premise of change. “Transformational leadership is a process that motivates followers by appealing to the higher ideas and moral values where the leader has a deep set of internal values and ideas and is persuasive at motivating followers to act in a way that sustains the greater good rather than their own interests” (Burns, 1978 as cited in Owen Doody & Catriona Doody, 2012, p.1212). Therefore, when it comes to implementing transformational leadership in a healthcare setting the nurse leader must takes on various
In this paper, I will inform you about issues in globalization, power, followership and cultural change in the perspective of a health leader. I will identify three major health issues that are global but has the potential to affect the United States health care system. I will describe these global health issues influence health leaders. I will relate global leadership with transformational leadership. I will illuminate three elements of cultural and diversity within health care organizations. You will find a table of cultural attributes to be made aware of. I will categorize the differences in global leadership according to power, technology, and knowledge management and will explain two
In order to develop strong leaders throughout the nursing industry, one must encompass various traits from all types of leadership theories. Of the many different theories, transformational leadership has a heavy impact in creating a strong and successful leader. Strengths Finder 2.0 guides individuals into focusing on developing themselves through their strengths instead of trying to fix their weaknesses. Transformational leaders and transactional leaders differ from one another in the manner that they encourage and motivate those who follow them. Transactional leaders are defined as those who focus on monetary and tangible rewards as motivational tools for the daily operations (Marquis & Huston, 2015). Transactional leadership is associated with a clear organizational structure in which managers and subordinates understand their roles and know from whom to receive reward and feedback (Cherry, 2015). This type of leadership style focuses on motivation for the here and now to accomplish daily tasks at hand. This leadership does not focus on forward thinking or growth towards the future (Gellis, 2001).
Per Gaudine and Lamb (2015), transformational leadership is “inspirational and based on motivating followers to achieve a high level of performance” (p. 6). As nursing promotes excellence in standard of care, this style of leadership is beneficial for a leader to demonstrate as inspiring and motivating followers will create the drive for a
A transformational leadership style along with good communication skills can be used to manage the multiples issues Hartland Memorial faces. “Transformational leadership involves anticipating future trends, inspiring followers to understand and embrace a new vision of possibilities, developing others to be leaders, and reward learners” (Hellriegal & Slocum, 2009, p. 301). Elizabeth and her associates should have the necessary qualities of a transformational leader; integrity, accountability, and motivation, so the staff can identify with them. The nurse manager could give nurses opportunities to demonstrate and experience leadership in their profession on a regular basis. Effective leadership is critical in delivering high quality care; equally
For transformational leadership I chose, Florence Nightingalea nurse in the 19th century who almost single-handedly changed the horrible conditions that existed in the nursing profession and in hospitals. Before she took control, the nursing profession barely provided any training. But with her outstanding administrative skills, she supported those who wanted to become nurses and worked toward her mission to provide competent health care for all which she felt was a basic human right. She was the first to be appointed to administer a group of nurses sent to care for soldiers during the Crimean War.
A common challenge that is impacting a number of firms is the ability to have everyone effectively work together. This is because differences of opinions and animosity are creating situations where no one is communicating with each other. These issues are having a negative impact on the firm and the way that it is able to reach out to stakeholders. As a result, the company is facing challenges in the way that it is interacting with customers. If left unaddressed, this can lead to the loss of market share and their competitive advantage.
Effective leadership is an important quality to create a functional workplace environment. When it comes to the healthcare system, specifically nursing, transformational leadership is the most qualified form. Its main principles inspire confidence, personal and organizational goals, innovation and support. (Hamstra, Van Ypern, Wisse, & Sassenburg, 2014). It is very effective at enhancing the client care and professional performance of the nurse leader’s followers. (Doody & Doody, 2012). Transformational leadership has many unique benefits, that other forms of
Leadership in any organization or workplace is essential to productivity and happiness of its members. I believe leadership is important in that it sets a tone and direction for all actions within the organization, and determines whether the organization is set for success of failure. This is especially true for nursing, where the nurses have a major responsibility to provide competent, evidence-based, safe care for clients in the health care environments ,while maintaining integrity and taking care of their own well-being. Nursing requires sound leadership that could provide guidance and ensure the best experience for the nurses and the clients who are being cared for. In my ideal vision, transformational leadership is used by the leaders on the unit, preferably a charge nurse of a head nurse to inspire the followers to rise and become leaders and innovators in the health care organizations.
