Some responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security to insure the safety and security of America from terrorism and other major problems. The main focus of Homeland Security terrorism, border security, customs and emergency management. The major controversy of the Department of Homeland Security is terrorism. The Department of Homeland Security was established on November 25, 2002. It was created for the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. The reason Homeland Security exists today because the government examined the 9/11 attack on the United States and saw how the attack was allowed to occur. The Department of Homeland Security helped create systems that would help benefit America in disasters and crisis. For example, the National Threat Advisory system. This system uses colors to show how high or how low the threat can be. Red is the highest, which means severe, and green being the lowest, which means low threat. An example of this would be when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and one of the departments of Homeland Security which is also known as FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to come and help fix the situation. The Bush Administration and FEMA were heavily criticized for being slow in the Katrina incident in New Orleans. Michael Brown was also criticized for being the one in charge of handling the situation and before was given praise by the president for doing a good job with the disaster. Michael Brown later was forced to resign from office. Later, Congress formed a legislation called the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act, which can now make the agency now for capable of handling disasters natural or man-made. The Department of Homeland Security gives over 57 billion dollars to defense contractors. There about 69,248 contractors in total that have provided goods and services to the department.
