The main job or responsibility of the justice systems is to enforce the laws that are put in place to protect our country and the people who live in it. The head justices try their hardest to set certain consequences that is fit to the crime, the more malicious the crime the larger the consequence. America more specifically tries to keep its justice system fair with prosecuting and fulfilling its sentences. Sometimes the justice system goes too far. By no means is any justice system perfect, but a large controversial punishment that has been enforced in this country is capital punishment. According to deathpenaltyinfo.org this occurred in the Carlos DeLuna case in Texas in 1983. DeLuna was convicted of violent stabbings. These stabbing were inflicted upon a convenience store worker named Wanda Lopez. DeLuna was executed in 1989. Later is was discovered that evidence actually pointed towards his innocence. A different man, Carlos Hernandez, was guilty, he also was previously connected to similar malicious actions. DeLuna was an innocent man that paid the price for a murder that was committed by someone else. No one deserves to lose their life because of someone else. This case alone proves that the death penalty is no better than a murderer killing innocent people. Carlos DeLuna would agree. Unfortunately, the DeLuna case is not the only case in which an innocent person’s life was sacrificed for the price of another man’s crime. There have been multiple cases of these sorts of situations, which is a sad and unfortunate fact. I found this case specifically upsetting because they both the guys had the same name and I can help but wonder if that’s one of the reasons they were so dead set on DeLuna being the killer because he shared a named with the actual killer.
